I saw the movie last night. All the things that Jack talks about that make the games cool... none of that is in the movie. Also, while I love Jack Black, there was absolutely zero reason to cast him as the voice of Claptrap while the original voice actor is still working. This movie was killed by moronic executives, and team of people that looked at the Borderlands game cover and then said, "let's make this our own!" It really is a shame.

Kojima has a weird thing for American actors and celebrities. He was obsessed with Kurt Russel’s character Snake from Escape From NY, which led to Metal Gear and his eventual meeting with David Hayter. Then he moved on to Kiefer Sutherland, then Norman Reedus. I lost respect for him when he dropped Hayter as Snake.
@Phoenix_19915 ай бұрын
@@JaguarXJto be fair, he only did that with big boss, and it turned out it wasn't even the real big boss. Solid Snake had never been replaced still. So in my head, Hayder is Still Solid Snake. Plus people forget but, they had also replaced Big Boss' VA at te end of MGS4, but I get it, je was old and in the same scene as Solid so it would have been awkward, but still. I don't mind it as much as I used to since they are all their own unique person, solid, liquid, solidus, naked and venom snake. All having different VA's.
@JaguarXJ5 ай бұрын
@@Phoenix_1991 I know that’s the supposed narrative of what happened but if you read about it from Hayter’s perspective you will see that he was basically forced out and not asked to return as Snake. You can put whatever “spin” you want on the situation, but clearly they had some type of falling out. I have no idea what happened but Kojima has always been a little weird and has only gotten weirder. Also, the fact that Konami even kicked him off his own creation (Metal Gear) speaks volumes. I say this as someone who’s favorite games of all time are the MGS series btw.

I also think it's because video game releases still feel like an "event." Movies and TV are moving further and further to streaming content mills, where quantity exceeds quality. You never have to fit anything into a "release schedule", you just have to target the right demographic. So the line between TV and movies is blurring into one general umbrella of "content" that is blasting out of a firehose at all times. And it's made to be somewhat disposable, because by the time you're finished with one thing, they want you to watch 8 more things that just came out while you were watching. A game on the other hand can be something you look forward to for 9+ months, pre-ordering feels special, preloading feels special, you get deluxe editions with bonus content, sometimes even statues and books, and a game can last you weeks if not months. In some very special cases, a single game can even last some people YEARS. And that's before you even consider expansion content like DLC, unlockables, secrets, and more. A single video game can leave this huge impact crater on the entertainment landscape in the way movies and TV are getting away from. (Except games also want to move in this direction, and that's exactly what Xbox Game Pass is trying to do)

Part of why the goosebumps books became so popular was because of the choose your own path options that came along with some books. Always had to keep my finger on the previous page because you could always just die and it would end. There was also a movie in the 90's called Mr. Payback that had the theatres equipped with a controlled with 3 buttons and as different scenes were coming to an end, you were prompted to choose the next scene with the buttons. No dispersion on the actors as I know they were just doing what they could with what they had, but Eli Vance should be ashamed of himself for the writing & directing. Seriously, it's just a painful watch. Doubly so because I was watching terrific actors in such a dreadful film. Again, nothing but love, Jack, but the movie sucked hard. I wish they'd taken some notes from "Tales From the Borderlands" 'cause that stuff was brilliant. The first usage of the comic book look from the Borderlands games (known as cel-shading) actually predates the series by roughly a decade, unlike what Jack Black is saying here. It's a bit of a debate which one was actually the first due to development periods overlapping, but Jet Set Radio (released in 2000) is widely considered being the pioneer, with multiple games adopting the style before Borderlands came along.
