I could see how a lower proof but older could be better I think it’s more to with the age and it being a short barrel more than the proof

I have 2 bottles of this. One is from barrel house 1-06 and is 130 proof, the other is barrel house 1-09 which clocks in at 136.6 proof. Per Jack Daniel's website, 1-09 is a barrel house on Coy Hill. I saw this information on the page for their Single Barrel Heritage Barrel. Never thought I'd touch a Coy Hill aged whiskey, but here we are. The shit is amazing. Maybe some day, I'll get an actual Coy Hill! Cheers Billiam!

Haha enjoy glad you like it. I never knew barrelhouse 9 was considered coy hill thought it was only 8 and 13 since that’s what the original coy hill came from but good to know

@@bourbonbill I've read that its 8 through 13, not just 8 and 13. 1-08, 1-09, 1-10, 1-11, and 1-13. (There is no barrelhouse 12 anymore, because it was destroyed)

I’ve got a 2-18 that is the best i have ever tried! Curious what the 2 signifies if the 18 is the barrelhouse?
@bourbonbill4 сағат бұрын
Supposedly the first number refers to what area the barrelhouse is in. Someone commented on here that 1 was at the distillery 2 was like a mile away and 3 was towards Lincoln a few miles away so like the area if you will

Just cracked a JD SBBP Rye pick from another channel and it is spectacular. The value on these is incredible making them hands down some of the best whiskey on the market.

My first experience with JDSBBP Rye was from PA FWGS and was trash. I could barely drink it. Got the Saubel's pick and was night and day. Not even the same thing at all. Amazing the swing in flavor of these things.
@jeremybamgbade22 сағат бұрын
unfortunately Jack Daniels has serious quality control issues when it comes to their single barrels. The shelfers can range from spectacular to absolute dog doo-doo. It's always a gamble picking one of them up. If it isn't a store pick, I wouldn't risk it
@bourbonbill22 сағат бұрын
Yeah there is some flavor differences for sure on them. I think the rye varies more then the bourbon does

Liking the ryes better than their bourbon lately. Picked up a 137.3 barrel house 13 bottled 8/24 pick for $42.99 on sale. Nose is like green candied apple with caramel spices. Delicious. The finish gets a bit earthy though for some reason. Still great
@bourbonbill22 сағат бұрын
Yeah I enjoy both of their barrel proof offerings but if I was forced to choose as a whole the rye is probably better
@Best_Served_Neat_On_Ice19 сағат бұрын
What's the main difference you notice between their ryes and their bourbons?
@bourbonbill14 сағат бұрын
I think the ryes just add a slight layer of additional flavor brough on by the higher rye mashbill. They are fairly similar experiences but rye ages faster then bourbon so pound for pound at the same age rye is going to be better

Dude a local store is getting a JD Rye pick that they say is coming from the Coy Hill warehouse. 9 year and high proof as well I’m looking forward to it! I recently got an 8 year old Dominick single barrel that only produced 74 bottles at over 130 proof for $59.99! It seems that there is still some good value to be had out there but it damn sure isn’t found in special releases but rather great stocks put in the main releases.

Have two from 1-07 1 @ 138.2 1 @ 135.5 (store pick) Both are amazing and dark as night. Have another from a different barrel house @ 132 proof and it’s not too shabby either but not as good or not as dark. JD SiB BP RYE is one of my favorites and can’t wait to add more to my collection.

This year been buying just about every JD BP Rye I can find. Got 6 different barrels so far. Most recent is a local store pick 138.6P BH 1-06, $76. Got the 2nd barrel release M&J pick BH 1-06 133.4P known as "Adam's Peaches". Not sure if that's the one you said is 8.5yr. It seems, most distilleries put out the best juice of a new product within the 1st couple years. The JD BP bourbons in my area now range from 123.1-129.5P & no picks (TW's is not a pick). Also, all the JD ryes are significantly darker. Also, look at stuff like OF 1920. Was good in 1st couple years, then it went to shit. So, I'm expecting the JD Rye to go the same direction as the bourbon, but hopefully not until 2026. A lot of that will depend on demand.
@bourbonbill22 сағат бұрын
Haha yeah for sure I think the good rye will dry up as they either put it in LEs or do age stated ryes. I have a pick of their bourbon from 2020-2021 that is super dark and drinks like barrel proof JD10 and I’ve never found another bourbon like that from them because they are putting the old barrels into the age stated series or their LEs
@motohead07722 сағат бұрын
@@bourbonbill yeah, I've heard really good bourbon picks from the past can be confused for a Coy Hill bottle, when done blind. Also, some of the Rye barrels (even shelfers) are as good as the original "special release" ryes. You may have been one of them, who had that experience.
@bourbonbill21 сағат бұрын
@@motohead077yep the bourbon street pick in this video was as good as one sample of the 2020 LE I had but wasn’t as good as another 2020 LE sample I had but this new coy hill rye at nearly 9 would beat all the 2020s they simply were no more than 7yrs back then

When you're drinking a Coy Hill, saying it looks smells and tastes like a Coy Hill but don't know it's actually a Coy Hill... That makes it even better. Their barrel house numbering makes no sense. How is 1-18 not barrelhouse 1, rick 18? That bottle sounds like an absolute steal.
@motohead07723 сағат бұрын
Pretty sure the 1st number of barrel house is the area, like how WT has Tyrone, Camp Nelson, etc. for areas, with multiple Rickouses within those areas. Ex; I have a RR Pick from warehouse TY-F floor 4. This means Rickhouse 'F' on the Tyrone campus. So a JD from barrel house 1-09, is from rickhouse '09' in area 1. Coy Hill is an area with multiple rickhouses just like Camp Nelson at WT has multiple Rickhouses. (Pretty sure "Coy Hill" is a nick name for area "1") That is my understanding of it. JD does NOT do a good job providing info on barrel houses, floors, etc.
@bourbonbill22 сағат бұрын
Haha I know after I filmed that I learned the second number is the barrelhouse and. I knew the original coy hill was from either barrel house 8 or 13 while the new 2024 coy hill only comes from barrelhouse 8 but yeah no lie this was a coy hill pick for the rye and because of its proof and color it had to be higher up in the rickhouse so it’s darn close to what I think they will ultimately release as a coy hill rye
@Defx1022 сағат бұрын
The first number ranges from 1 to 3, and is the location of the barrelhouses. The barrel houses starting with 1 are located at the distillery, starting with 2 are about a mile down the road near the bottling facility, and 3 are a few miles down the road toward Lincoln county. The second number(s) is the barrelhouse number.
@bourbonbill14 сағат бұрын
thats very interesting info yeah I don't know I know for sure the OG coy hill was barrelhouse 8 and 13 and the new one is barrelhouse 8 so at least JD calls those two coy hill themselves on bottles haha
