I see apples and oranges. Hodinkee's video/essay was an exploration of the minutiae of the evolution of the Daytona. This video is a look at how that history informs current cultural perception. Frankly, I think the two videos work well together: Hodinkee's is a detailed encyclopedia entry, Watchbox's is the modern essay on the same sujbect. (full disclosure: I don't care much for a lot of the changes going at Hodinkee lately, but there's still some quality work being done over there. Reference Points in particular is a valuable and well-structured resource.)

@@bobmclennan1727 I agree - not suggesting it's binary and I enjoyed both, but I have no doubt the Hodinkee release influenced Watchbox to get something out quickly with a deliberate and therefore cheeky focus on their A-players. It's a mighty and telling coincidence otherwise.

These guys are the creme de la creme. I’m always in awe at the encyclopaedic retention of Tim’s, but here I have to agree that the sub is more influential. The datejust is more iconic (I’m surprised they didn’t mention the cyclops) but the submariner has defined a genre of its own in terms of looks.

I think many of the loud mouths on social media the constantly bash Rolex and reduce it nothing more than a marketing company need to watch this video and learn some facts. You don’t need to love Rolex but you need to at least respect their history if you’re a true watch enthusiast. Thank you to Mike, Tim and Jack for this amazing video.

Its a shame that Rolex has this wonderful legacy but if someone were inclined to purchase a piece of this history for themselves they can't and the result of that frustration has been pointed at the brand (deservedly so). Its basically impossible to separate the brand from the baggage, waitlists, AD games, thefts, grey market wheeling and dealing ;D, it just goes on and on and what I wonder is how does that affect their legacy?

One can argue that the Rolex Submariner is the most influential watch since it is essentially the same design and sells well to today' watch collectors. Using a Rock and Roll reference, the Sub can be compared to the Beatles music appealing to another generation of music fans. Hell, even my classical music loving mom (may she rest in peace) loved the Beatles! Although, I could argue that the MOST influential watch, which was not discussed, is the GMT. It was designed for Pan Am pilots at the beginning of the continental/inter-continental travel age. It was practical, could be used by non-pilots as well. All three current models, the all black bezel, Pepsi, and Batman are fun& durable watches to wear everyday. Case closed. IMHO.

Loved this discussion! Had no idea that the Zenith Daytonas were so in demand as to be sold above retail even when they were still in production. I do think, though, you guys might be downplaying the Daytona’s mertis as a watch. While I agree that it hasn’t had the influence by imitation that the Sub or Datejust had, I don’t think it’s as unexciting a watch as it seems you guys do. The 4-digit Daytonas’ combination of contrasting subdials, tachymeter bezel and (maybe most importantly) screw-down pushers and full bracelet seems to me like it was as ahead of its time as the 5711 was in 2006 (actually, a lot more so). Having all these features together surely adds to their value and popularity exploding today.

Submariner is hard to be the most influential since they copied, with differences, the Fifty Fathoms feature set. A watch derivative of another can’t really be influential. The Daytona doesn’t have anything that anyone else really was influenced by it. It has become popular simply because it is hard to get, and a lot of celebrities have one. As a watch, and as chronograph it is arguably one of the worst out there: with the screw down pushers it is hard to use, yet no more water resistant than non screw down pusher; it failed against the Omega Speedmaster, initially, in the marketplace; and as a watch it just is a poor design, much harder to read than really almost all its competitors-Omega, Breitling, Breuget, Zenith, any number of Flieger Chronos, etc are all much more useful timepieces and stopwatches. Would have to agree with Tim that the OP or Oyster Date were far more influential that the other two. But surprisingly, you left out the GMT Master/II which really created an entirely new category of watches, one which almost all brands now provide in their catalog. When you have created a watch category, it’s hard to argue that wasn’t influential. And along with the Submariner, it defines Rolex for a vast number of the population. Great discussion though, and one with no answer, just good opinions.

I’d also mention Rolex bracelets: oyster, jubilee, presidential. It just completes the archetype of an everyday sports watch. A metal bracelet is now a default go to option as oppose to leather or canvas.

Truth about the Daytona, is that Italians are the most Stylish people in the world, and Italians have launched the trend to have a sport watch in the luxury spot. Everyone wanted to be Stylish, everyone wanted to be Italianish… If you can see 1/3 of the world owners of Daytonas are in Italy, on Chrono24 there are the same amount of Daytonas in Italy as in the whole US. As the same was for the Royal Oak and the Nautilus. Thanks Italians!

Tim where did you get that T-shirt and what a great interview! Got started with Rolex from the TV show SeaHunt, starring Lloyd Bridges, he wore a gold Sub. That show also turned me onto scuba diving as a hobby. I bought a Waltham that looked like a mini Sub, that I still have to this day and was close to 60 years ago, non functional at this point. Yet my first real watch was a Rolex gold GMT Master that at the time listed for $1,350.00 a gold Sub didn't come till later.
