Even with a fully functioning memory, it grates like hell to have someone prod you when you can't remember something. She needs to stop doing that. It's cruel.

@@mas5867 I learned early in my Dad's dementia when I asked him a question or two about the past and I saw the anguish in his eyes that he could not remember. I realized that I just need to let him take control of the conversation because he was always trying to teach my brothers and me. I later realized that my father's memories ebbs and flows like the tidal changes. It is just best to enjoy the present time that we all have together.

My Dad died from this disease. The hardest part was, when visiting him, he would always tell me "I am going home with you today". On his last day, he was holding my hand, and turned slowly and grabbed my other hand, and said "I love you Rusty"... he had not forgotten me! Later that day he said this was no way to live, and I told him I would make sure he got home in the next couple of days. He died the following day.... He went home! God Bless you Suzi - You are giving him the comfort he deserves.

Jack and Mrs. Hanna live in one of the most beautiful places on earth - Bigfork, Montana. I live about 45 minutes from them and I didn't know it until I saw this video. Bigfork is right on the beautiful north shore of Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. I am so sorry to learn that he is going through this and very grateful that he has such a loving and caring wife. I always enjoyed watching his shows. To think that such an active and vibrant man has been reduced to this breaks my heart. No one deserves this fate. God bless them both.

Jack Hanna gave us so many wonderful memories and his love of animals and nature showed through in everything he did. His conservation efforts made a huge impact on how animals are kept and bred in captivity today. People would laugh seeing him on the Johnny Carson show because of the animal's antics, but his whole point of being there - was so people could actually see the wonder of that animal and want to save it. Thank you Jack - for taking us to far off lands we would never see ourselves and teaching us about the wonders of animals - big and small, and for leaving behind a Zoo that is world renowned for its efforts in conservation.

I went through it with my father as well and it is the worst to witness your loved one fade. It breaks my heart to even think about it. My father didn’t deserve that fate. I’m so glad she is with my father, I miss them both dearly, death can be a blessing, it’s cold of me to say, but she deserved peace after her struggle. I love you mom! My father passed away with Alzheimer's disease. It was hard and I know exactly what you're going through. The only thing I can advise is to not scorn him when he can't remember something: "Nah it's not coming to you" because one of the last things they lose is the ability to know that they've lost. Just let whatever's left of him know that you understand and that he doesn't have to try so hard because you love him no matter what.

That was my thought. The first thing I learned from my dad’s nurses was not to ask him “Do you remember?” because it makes him feel worse when he can’t. It was really hard to stop saying it, just out of habit, but I did notice a difference once I did.

Exactly. My mom is advanced and I try to not say anything that may cause her to have to remember. I don't even introduce her as my mom anymore. On her good days, she'll mention that I'm her "baby boy." On her bad days she doesn't remember that she's my mom and thinks that her mom (dead for 30 years) is going to be mad at her if she doesn't get home.

This breaks my heart because I took care of my Dad by myself for about 8 years and it was the best thing I ever did in my whole life even though it was also the hardest. I would have died for my Dad and when I got enough money together, I took him home with me and he healed a lot. I know we have cures for everything, I just know it. But right now, things being how they are and watching this video, this brings back so many memories. I am glad my Dad is in a better place. The best thing we can hope for and pray for is a good passing and with Jack being at home, with a loving wife who obviously cares for him and being able to be in Nature, is the best thing ever. I will pray for you both. God bless Jack, he is a beautiful man and brought us all so much joy and we always laughed and had fun when he would come on with his animals. It's definitely easier when you have money and no worries and you can afford the best care. My husband also is suffering from moderate dementia. I have him in an adult center a few days a week being paid for by private aging services. I've had some things happen. I know one thing. They will always deny. My husband was physically assaulted by another member and he forgot. Two weeks after it happened he told me. They tried to get rid of me when I brought it up. They downplayed it. I actually know the family of the person very well so I went to them privately and they told me what happened. I've also encountered eye rolling, just a bad vibe if I'm telling one of the staff about something my husband was dealing with. Going to have to speak to his case manager about it, but at this point not hopeful. I don't trust anybody anymore.

@JustMe-uu3bh Can I just say that I know what it takes to do what you did? And I'm very proud of you for your commitment to your family. I took care of my mother-in-law and grandfather-in-law for 2.5 years when I was 18 & newly married. I also took care of my grandma for 2.5 years until she died, so she could be at home on the farm she loved so dearly. My 4 little boys, aged 5-10, helped me & often brought a smile to her face. I've worked in nursing homes, assisted living apartments, and rehab places. No matter how good they might be, they can't provide the kind of care that family can at home. And they don't provide the love that family does. And loved ones are mistreated in some cases, and at the very least neglected in other. No matter how well they do, they just don't have enough manpower to give them the same standard of care. We can rest assured that we are blessed when we take care of family. It's hard, especially the letting go. But God blesses us in ways we can't even imagine. Well done! ❤ ❤ ❤

I'm broken hearted for the Hanna family. I understand this tragedy all to well. Thank you Jack Hanna for all the years you gave us everything you had. You made the world a better place. God bless the Hanna family.

Alzheimer's got a hold of my mom and she eventually passed. Before Alzheimer's, she was the sharpest woman I had ever known (not just saying that cause she was my mom). She had a great life with her husband and traveled a lot. She was very empathetic towards everyone and could look at a person and instantly connect with how they felt and understand why they felt that way. While visiting her during her last few months, she would sit in a chair and twiddle her fingers and thumbs in her own little world. I used to sit there and wonder if she even knew who I was cause it seemed like there was very little acknowledgement b/c of the Alzheimer's. But every time I gave her a hug at the end of each visit, she would grab my hand and squeeze really hard and that was all the confirmation I needed. Truly hope a cure for this will reveal itself someday.

I am so sorry. My mother had Alzheimer’s, and she was so vibrant and raise six beautiful children and was a wonderful partner to my dad, and was his caregiver when he had cancer and it was heartbreaking to see her journey downhill, but we have such wonderful memories of her as you do with Jack. He was my favorite guest on David Letterman and I have seen all of his shows two or three times. What a wonderful personality and he was so funny. He taught me so much about animals from all around the world. I know how hard it is to be a caregiver especially if it’s your life partner, and having to witness what they are going through each day. You both have given us wonderful memories of your travels together. So glad we will be able to watch them over and over. Bless you both and thank you. 🙏🙏🙏❤❤
