On this episode of the Heart Wisdom Hour, Jack looks at how the depth of meditation leads us on the Bodhisattva path of service, love and joy.
Show Notes
Education of the Heart (Opening) - Through our various spiritual practices we are bearing witness to our human incarnation in a way that is unlike any other. Jack talks about the ways in which we develop the capacity to witness, and find joy, even in the face of life’s greatest difficulties.
That’s Not Who I Am (13:15) - The journey of awakening is one that lightens the heart and brings untold joy, but that does not mean we cease to experience negative emotions or make mistakes along the way. Jack explores the way that practice illuminates these aspects while allowing us to move forward without identifying with them.
“Do I get angry? Of course, I get angry, frustrated and afraid. It’s not just me, I have seen some of the great masters get upset. I have watched the Dalai Lama chew people out, Thich Nhat Han get upset and I pissed off Mother Theresa but that is a story for any other time.”
Jack further explores the idea of moving past our identification with our thoughts and feelings on Ep. 67 of the Heart Wisdom Hour.
Seat of the Bodhisattva (20:45) - When we take time for retreat, it can be easily mistaken for withdrawal or self-centeredness. Jack explains why it is that we need to take this time to get quiet and contemplate things.
“It is a reality that as we sit, the walls of who we are starting to dissolve. We discover very directly and immediately that we are woven in a single garment of destiny, part of this network of mutuality. When we understand this, how do we act? The key is our intention.”
The Secret of Intention (30:20) - Jack discusses the importance of the intention behind our actions. He shows how when we stop focusing on the outcome, and instead on the value of our actions, we plant seeds that will blossom in a way we may never see.
“The secret is to act beautifully, without attachment, to the fruits of your actions. That is the place of freedom.”
Loyal to Love (43:45) - A trait shared by most awakened beings is the laughter of the wise. Jack discusses the value of laughter and the Buddhas words on living a life full of joy.

I. Have listened to this talk probably 10 times as part of my sitting practice as I Live in TN now and have less occasions to go be with my mentors who live at The Last Resort high in the Utah Southern Mountains. They are long-time students of Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzburg, and the Barre, MA group who developed IMS. I began sitting with Ram Dass at the Lama Foundation back in the Early 70s in New Mexico and occasionally had the opportunity to be with Jack when he was available to be there at Lama. Listening today the advise to stay in the deep dive of a long retreat and open to going deeper is so true and so valuable. I have not had the opportunity to attend a retreat as I am now in a wheelchair and in this part of the USA there are less retreat Centers that are accessible. But having these Dharma talks on line are a huge boon to my practice. Having started when I was 21 I am now 76 and my life is steadily one of learning about Joy, Love, kindness, and intentional action to “spread the words” that are my life. I am also a 45-year- yoga instructor still teaching and loving that I teach. Thank you Jack, Trudy, and all my mentors for the gifts that make this life of this bodhisatva so rich and special. Blessings.

Oh my goodness the story of the parents washing their dead son made me cry so much. Thank you Jack for being the master of sharing stories, truly makes you a unique teacher and I get from you something I don't from most.

Wow I met frank ostaseski. I was a hospice nurse for a few years which led me onto this path from fundamental christianity. I met him here in Longview WA, actually in La center, wa. I've had scenarios like this. The death of a 4 yo girl shook me from my fundamentalism, but it was a long road of bitterness. The sadness that is so hard for me to bear today that I can hardly function is being the product of a society that values money and possessions above relationship. I feel the struggle. Also all the bitterness that has prevented me from living fully. The regret of hating myself for so many years, but things are moving forward I don't live in it.
