As a Philly kid, my exposure back in the late 70s-early 80s was through NFL Films, league game day highlights, and magazines... I wore nothing but 58, in every sport. The real truth the steelers front four and the steelers secondary. Now put jack Lambert in the Chicago bears defense and put dick butkus in the steelers defense. Jack Lambert had the privilege of playing around great black players dick butkus did not even with gale Sayers. What's all the hype. The 1972 season before Lambert there was LB name henry Davis. Super Bowl 8 Lambert didn't even play and the Vikings only scored 6 points without Lambert. Sports writers don't always give you the whole story. Now don't get mad when I say this the black players made those steelers great on offense & defense. Lambert was a great player but so was dick butkus , but there's a difference, and that difference was and always will be the black players and I don't have to call there name you know who they are.

I attended Jack Lambert Football Camp three years, it was an awesome experience. I played nose tackle, and I remember Jack telling me that I was a crazy kid, hitting others like we had pads on during scrimmage when it was light contact without pads. He told me to tone it down, and I said that I was toned down and that I could show him my full speed if he wanted to see it. He told me that if I was able to grow into my position physically, that I would be a pro. I ended up being a pipsqueak when everybody else grew and filled out but as second string, I still saw some playing time as a small lineman, and I still was able to compete like a big guy, and I attribute it to the training that I received at the Jack Lambert Football Camp. I am a life long Browns fan, but I will always be a fan of Jack. Great memories!

Ahhh the great Steelers of the 70s. I fell in love with football back then as a little kid. Loved Mean Joe, Ham, Blount, Franco, Bradshaw etc.., but Lambert was, is, and will always be my favorite player of all time. The only other that is even close is Ronnie Lott. This guy constantly blew up plays in both the rushing and passing defense. He was everywhere. What he lacked in size he had in stamina and being rangy. What he lacked in strength he made up in football intellegence, drive and heart. He was a smart football player and never missed where he was suppose to be. He was tough, mean and was the enforcer of that team. He was feared and reviled and was one bad MF. He backed down from nobody and nobody ever fucked with him. My girl offered to buy me a Steelers jersey four years ago. Being ten years younger than me she was talking about Roethlisberger, Polamalu, Harrison etc. I took a look in the catalog and they had the throwback jerseys. I got my second jersey ever. Home black, #58. Lambert. Now it needs his autograph. Its fun being a kid at 50. Damn I miss this era, that defense and Jack Lambert

No one can take a thing away from Lambert. He was everything everyone says he was. He was the man in the middle on one of the greatest defenses in history. He was fierce. He was the intimidator. He led the team in tackles. BUT!! "One of the greatest defenses in history." He was surrounded by all pros. He didn't have to worry about the men beside him, in front of him, or the men behind him doing their jobs. Now consider Dick Butkus. Was on a team that couldn't get out of it's own way. Defensive player of the year when the Bears only won one game. The greatest intimidator of them all. Jack was great--one of the true greats--but he didn't leave a trail of broken, bloody bodies in his wake. Butkus did.

as a young Airman stationed at Tanagra Air Force Base in Greece In 1976 I met him as he traveled through our little 42 man munition support squadron at this remote Air Force site. He was traveling with the USO. He and Carl Eller and a few others sat and talked with the guys for a hour or two that evening . Everyone seemed to know him . In the '74 preseason, inside linebacker Henry Davis suffered a career ending neck injury. He had been one of the few pro-bowl selections for the Steelers in '73. This incident may have launched Lambert's career, but Davis was a great talent who didn't lose his job. A true NFL "what if".

Someone once told me that after practice, he would go up to a wall on the outside of the field house and run his head into the wall ten times before hitting the showers. I would!! He was too 'scientific', too formulaic and too analytically-based of a player for such childish folklore to be true. One of the main reasons he was drafted by the Steelers was that Noll saw in him a 'scientific mindset', insofar as the 'laws of football' existed. As all of these specials about him say, he was a great 'football player' as opposed to being just a great 'athlete'. Jack was known for his incredible memory, and how he used that to analyze the line-set of each play and how to devise in real time the necessary adjustments to the line to counter-act it. The difference is like playing chess on a 2D field (board) compared to waging war on a real field with TIME passing and limited to so many seconds, and in the ability to bring the mental attributes of analysis, devising a solution and then EXECUTION of said solution in REAL-TIME!! I grew up in Pgh and Lambert was the epitome of a rational, solution-based player. I think, as much as those stories grew out of respect/fear of him, they were just 'urban legend'. Glad he came to the Steel City!!

I was a big Raider fan in the 70's , Kenny Stabler was my hero and the 'Immaculate Reception' was like a knife in my gut. That was THE single play that launched the Steelers into prime time. No doubt, the trophy's name is appropriate. I used to love watching Butkus. He was the prototype for that era and that of Joe Schmidt and Sam Huff, but he's been surpassed. Ray Lewis was a much better athlete, just as intimidating, and just as hard hitting in an era where rodeoing a running back's head as a tackle isn't allowed and speed and quickness are absolute necessities. On the other hand, LT and Hendricks haven't been overtaken in this era.

I love young people always saying players wouldn't make it today. The difference then and now, is today they look for 40 time cones, yet look at the bust that are great athletes. Give me a guy that works his but off hits hard and relentless. Butkus was the perfect example. Football players are soft now. Is Tom Brady the best athletic QB? But he's the best. John Elway I guess couldn't play today either? He is probably the best ever. He threw a ball that could break fingers. No one throws that hard anymore.Many Superbowls without the talent because of him.
