This old farm jack, or hi lift style jack is one I stole (kind of) a long time ago from my father-in-law who was a farmer. He had a couple of them and was not using either... I actually did ask him for it :). In any case it was ready to be cleaned up again. I had forgotten about it in an old tool box on my old Tacoma and it got wet and got super rusty.
To complete the cleanup and restoration I used Evaporust, to clean the rust along with some sparky grinding, and then used Krylon spray paint to finish it off. Below are Amazon Affiliate links for both, by using these links you can help support the channel, so, thanks!
Evapo-Rust The Original Super Safe Rust Remover, Water-Based, Non-Toxic, Biodegradable, 1 Gallon - amzn.to/2SVKiWb

I have to admit, the displacement trick with the Evaporust was a simplistic solution to a problem I've seen many times in these types of channels. Other people change containers, tilt the containers, soak a paper towel in the solution but displacement just seems so obvious I wouldn't have thought of it. Great upload. Thanks

Nice vid -- thanks. I just rebuilt a similar jack. For fitting new roll pins into the old lifting dowels, I found 2 spare appropriate-sized hex keys and ground down their flats to fit the dowel holes. They are hardened steel and work like champs.

Very interesting, from a 73 year old old farmer trick, 50-50 mixture of ATF and diesel , creates a chemical reaction that Eats up varnish and rust in your cylinders and bottom end ,Very inexpensive and has always worked for me.

Use side cutters to open the cotter pins. Or at the very least needle nose pliers. That is why one side of the pin is longer.

You did a GREAT job! I have a very old farm jack, found on an old farm here in South Carolina, in not quite as bad shape. The mysterious thing is, it has no pawls and detents on the vertical part, BUT WORKS/LIFTS very well. I have looked online til my eyes are falling out an can't find ANY antique that works this way. It is pretty onbious that it is from the 1800's or very early 1900's, but I find zero images of this jack in the farm, building, and even railroad trades. I'd love to get your suggestions and input if any - happy to send photos. Thanks!

I just happened to find one of these hi lift jacks in the garbage last week. Figured I'd bring it home and see what I can do with it. Like yours, it's rusted through and through, and it doesn't want to climb or descend. Having seen the lift pins are angled on one end, makes me wonder if that may be one of the problems, along with all the corrosion. Your video came at a most opportune time. Looks like I'll be doing some disassembly today and rustoration of my own. Thanks, Chris Gatineau, Quebec, Canada

Nice restoration, Old Shovel. Your Hi Lift jack is missing a part that pins to the top of the vertical lifting rail. That enables the whole jack to be secured horizontally and used as an improvised winch by securing the missing top fitting to an anchor (like a tree). It's very helpful to weld a hardened chain grab hook to the underside of the lifting shelf. Then you can anchor the top as described above, wrap a chain around object to be moved (like a bull horn attached to frame of a pick-up), take slack out of chain and secure the running end into the welded-on grab hook. Viola, poor man's 36" come-along winch. I had my "Handyman Jack" set up that way in Alaska. It was very versatile during the annual deep mud at "break-up" every spring, as well as when getting "high-centered" in the snows of winter. Please keep your great videos coming. I love them.

Nice! I do have a car jack that should be black(possibly painted) and for the most part, it is black. There are multiple spots where the paint is chipping of because of rust underneath the paint. Would it be safe to remove the rust from the car jack if it has some plastic parts on it?

One thing watching this that really bothers me,is all the slack or "slop" in the base or "foot"of the jack..🙄 It's what makes these so damn unstable and dangerous..😕 Creating a U-shaped bracket to take up the slack or just adding some washers would be an improvement.. Also replacing the pin and cotter, with a larger bolt and self locking nut, would tighten that pivot joint up .. JMHO...🙂

As much as I liked your video, I feel I should make a few comments about it. First: there is absolutely no need to talk during a restoration video. It is, after all, a video! We can actually see what you're doing, negating the need to describe what you're doing. :) Unless you like to hear your own voice on your video! Check out TYSY TUBE to see what I mean. Second: there were some areas in which you didn't show how the whole thing was put back together. It's interesting to see how all the parts fit back together. Here's a tip; when spreading cotter pins, use a pair of needle nose pliers. Much easier! :)
