My JRT/Westy is 8 years old, I’ve had him since he was 8 weeks old. He potty trained great I think he maybe had 1 or 2 accidents in his first week and that was it. He learned to go by the door when he needed to go out and if he was there for a bit without us noticing he would bark to alert us. 8 years later we’ve had zero potty mistakes save for some excited dribbles when greeting us if we’ve been gone for awhile but a quick wipe of the floor takes care of that. Unfortunately my elderly parents had to take care of him for me for a few months when he was 3 or 4 years old. I was struggling with my work being swamped and having me work sometimes 18 hour days which was not fair to me or my dog and I wasn’t able to focus on him like he deserved and I couldn’t keep just relying on neighbors or Rover to take him out and exercise him. Unfortunately my parents are big softies and wouldn’t discipline him and kept feeding him treats and people food throughout the day which reinforced many negative behaviors. I’ve been able to break most of the treat and people food behaviors but he’s still barking at everyone and everything which he never did before. He will actively watch tv and bark and try to attack any animals he sees. He also can’t stand delivery vehicles and most other dogs, and isn’t great with most men. I know he was attacked a few times at the dog park by my parents which unfortunately has stuck with him. He used to be great with other dogs and was so friendly with almost everyone and played great with people and dogs. Now I need to be so careful because he might seem fine with someone or a dog until they do something he doesn’t like and then it’s like a switch gets flipped and he wants to attack. He also hates his feet being touched and has to be sedated for nail trims. He’s a pain and difficult but I love him and he’s got more personality that most dogs and people and can really make us laugh. I wouldn’t trade him for anything but I wish I could help him to chill out and not get so stressed out about everything, and enjoy life freely like he used to. I’ve done great dog training with him about a year ago but due to his stubborn personality he got bored and a lot of the methods no longer worked. I’m thinking about trying to find another trainer soon to see if we can find different methods that can help him with his trust and anxiety of people, dog, and noises.

Yes, he can be taught to change his behavior. Just get a good trainer and I'm sure his attitude will change

Oh wow i also have a JRT and has most of the issues your dog has too and shes only 2 years old! Just like yours my own JRT had very negative behavior due to other people spoiling her with peoples food (even after me begging them to listen to my pleas). My dogs behavior was its worst at her puppy/adolesence phase but luckly calmed down by age 2. Though my honest advice would be if you train your dog out of bad behavior you should also make other house members (ie. Your parents) stop rewarding and enabling him like with giving him peoples food. Thats what managed to calm/fix some of the behavior of my own dog once everyone in the house stopped enabling her. But i wish you the best for you and your JRT, it might seem all hope for recovery is lost but you and your doggie will get there 🙏🙏 good luck i hope you find the trainer for ur dogs best needs!!

Just got a JRT. My wife's Chihuahua of 16 years passed away. I have a 6 year old Belgian Malinois. I was nervous about introducing them. Hes a very intimidating dog. Strength and intelligence pours from him. We live way out in the country and my dogs don't hang around other dogs. At all. I introduced them last night when I got the puppy home. My BM wanted to check him out very much. He was very excited and I had a hard time keeping his attention so he wouldn't just zone in on the puppy. Once he smelled him real good and I seen he wasn't going to have any signs of aggression. I let my wife put the JRT down and kept my BM on the leash. The BM lost interest quickly, but the JRT was "smitten". Followed him everywhere until bedtime. I have to be careful, because I don't want the puppy to love my BM more than me. I got up this morning and was watching them in the house. My BM was actually training the puppy about boundaries around his toys and room! (He has his own room) He also was teaching him how to go in and out of the house on the back porch. He done these things over and over until the puppy understood what he was showing him. I was floored once I realized what he was doing. I can't believe how amazing my BM is. I've never seen anything like it. And if the JRT ever gets in trouble, I have no doubt that he has the best protection there is.

I have had Jack Russell's most of my life that is over 70 years so I think that I know a bit about them I lost my last one six months ago it upset me very much as she was only 13 years old but the big C got her in the end. I have been on and off looking for a rescue one but its so hard as people do not seem to let there puppies mix with other dogs when they are young and so they want to fight with other dogs not good. All of my dogs have been able to run free and play with the other dogs in the park etc it is very hard to stop an older dog snapping at other dogs this is why they stay in the rescue pounds so long. if you are getting a new dog you have to start when they are young let them walk free with treats they should always return to you if you leave it to late it can be a problem getting them to come back to you.

I've owned high-energy dogs before a sheltie, a Labrador but I've never seen a dog that would exercise and wanted to exercise as much as Much as my Jack Russell. We used to go out three different times a day an hour and a half at a time. I have a huge yard and I would throw the tennis ball as far as I could with a throwing stick Non-Stop. An hour and a half three times a day. She's always been free fed she ate as much as a German Shepherd and ran and ran every day she even likes to run in the snow and dig in the snow better than summer. She's never hunted but I would pity the poor Fox that would try to run her till she got tired and quit chasing him. I'm in my '70s I've had a dog since I was 12 she is definitely tied in first place we're the only other dog I admired as much as her

1h WALKING per day is IMHO not enough. These dogs need to run free and run a lot. Don't be fooled by their size. 2 miles running beside a bike plus 1h walk running free is more like it. Plus high power playing like fetch ball, tugging a rope, agility etc. When other dogs of this size are done a Jack Russle just got up to operating temperature.

We have a JRT/ shitzu mix. We did not know this when we rescued him. We thought it was just a Shitzu, which we have over 30 yrs experience training and caring for. However, this was discovered when we had trouble training, house breaking and noticed traits completely different than a shitzu. He has a coat longer and thicker than a shitzu, so it wasn’t until we clipped him that we realized inning he had JRT in him. Which explained a lot! My brother had two and We were very familiar with the breed. Not one we would have picked, but he is amazing! We just can’t potty train him! He knows when to tell us he has to out, but then he comes back in and goes in the house. We have two other dogs and my 50 yrs of dog experience is that aside from training, they also learn from other indogs. He does go out with them and he does go, but then we’ll still have accidents. We started him with crate training, then wee pads at age 12 wks. Gradually moved him to outdoors with direct supervision. He is now 7mos. And while he’s gotten better, we still have, what I would consider, way too many accidents. In fact my other two dogs have now started going in the house, mos we cant always tell who did it. My question is, what do I need to do differently to potty train new family member? He knows all the basic commends, he even pee’s on commend. So what are we doing wrong? Now he goes out and stays out because he’s afraid to come in. What do we do?
