That’s a rather interesting concept; having the rear leg behind the center of mass. The more typical striking technique involves the rotation of the mass that rotates about the axis of the spine, about a 90 degree rotation from squared up shoulders (shown by paul daley at 2:46 or by diaz 2:40 ). But the way JDS threw it, the actual mass that’s accelerating is more than just the mass that rotates about the axis of the spine, it’s nearly the whole mass from the torso up as he transfers his mass from a neutral position to the lead foot. Relating this back to conservation of momentum, it makes sense that more momentum will transfer to the opponent by striking the way that JDS did. The momentum he gave in the punch was just about equal to the momentum of cains body that fell to the floor.

Excellent video, great content and presentation. My only complaint is that while the speed is fine for entertainment, for those trying to learn the information it goes by rather quickly. I found myself needing to pause or rewind a fair bit to catch it all. Would be cool to have an edit that shows the fight clips in slow mo a couple times and then normal speed, to have a good look at the movement being described, also a bit longer on the text and diagrams.

So what is your opinion then of horse stance? I've used both front stance and horse stance while sparring. I like how horse stance lowers your center of gravity allow you to pop up like in football, hitting your opponent with the heels of both palms just above his center of gravity shoving him backwards and in a single fluid motion throwing your hands down and grabbing his ankles throwing him on his back.

Do you see any traditional martial arts stances that would be effective in MMA? There are only a handful of fighters who use the wider karate styles of stances. Another odd one is Gegard Mousasi but more his overall posture than his feet.
