What I get from the lyrics is a guy whose girlfriend left him because she felt bad in the relationship and he thought the relationship was going well and the abrupt leaving left him sad and depressed hence the "I hate coping" and "I hate hoping line". As someone who takes this song to be about caring for a suicidal friend; I think the ending, with the ringtone with no answer, is the most haunting part. I think a lot of people can relate to calling a friend, not knowing whether they're dead or alive, and hearing the dial tone going on and on. Unsure if this will be just another silly incident where you were worried about nothing, or the moments leading up to the realization that your fiend is dead. Those moments suck shit.

Same, I’m currently caring for a suicidal friend, and I’m only in my early teens, anybody that has more experience with this sort of thing, please give me advice!
@anomalocaris82172 жыл бұрын
@@kaitlynpablo7452 Above all else, I advise you direct your friend to professional help. I think when you have a suicidal friend, its very tempting to try and take on the role of caretaker, therapist and suicide hotline all in one. But your friend needs professional help, which you can't provide, given that you both do not have training and are incredibly young. I spent I think about three years trying to be the caretaker for my suicidal friend, and it psychologically demolished me, and very nearly destroyed our friendship. Establish boundaries with your friend; let them know that while you love them and care for them, they should also talk to any responsible adults in their life, such as parents or a therapist about what's going on. The more adults that know what's going on, the safer your friend will be, because they will be able to evaluate whether they are a danger to themself, whether they should be kept away from sharp objects, etc. If you're comfortable doing so, talk to your own parents about your concerns, so that they can not only advise you on what mental health services you can direct your friends towards, but also make sure that you yourself are in a mentally healthy situation. My heart goes out to you, and I hope the best for you and your friend.

My own interpretation: It's about a man whose wife or girlfriend is on life support and close to death. She has little to no hope of surviving and he is so wracked with grief that he calls the suicide hotline over and over, wanting to end his suffering. At some point, he even admits that he hopes she would die so it could be over with. (I take the line "I insist that someone will die and I hate hoping" as both hoping he will die and that she would die, so that "someday he would go back outside and see her okay," outside in this case being the afterlife. Finally, so full of guilt and hung up on by the hotline, he kills himself. She then makes a miraculous recovery ("No flatline, what were you scared about?") After his death, and lives without him. Its also implied that his death is why she is now alive ("I've been dead, oh wrap the trouble now. I feel so good. You're welcome") But its also implied he killed himself for nothing ("Sunbathe 'til morning time And your e-eyes Will open wide (What a waste) Oh baby, nevermind And my si-ight Oh, run and hide") Overall, its about a man driven mad by his grief and guilt over his anger at his girfriends death. To add one final kicker, the line "Hoarder of Quarters and No Boundary Boredom" implies to me that he thought she was cheating on him because she hoarded quarters to make calls and was bored of boundaries. I'd venture that it wasn't true, as the later prechorus of "at least I called her" implies she heard it and he is now realizing that while she is alive his paranoid guilt may have ruined her in the same way. The ending of the song is so odd and disjointed because its his own mind drifting off on a hospital bed, flatlining the same way she did. He is now just dying, unable to say anything and regretting that he hoped either of them would die.
@framefilms18853 жыл бұрын

Since everyone's sharing their interpretations: I always thought this song was about someone losing their baby, and how the parents are coping with the loss. "Baby flatline", "someday I will go back outside and see her OK"-- he's on the phone with emergency services, the baby flatlines, he still hopes he'll someday see their baby outside and OK, etc. The parts about pills and "hoarder-of-quarters" refer to his wife struggling after the experience. That's just the narrative I personally picked up from it.
@louizagt2 жыл бұрын
Ooooh see I thought something along this line too! Or maybe she miscarried and maybe it was very far along and she still had to carry the baby... So she took pills and tried to commit suicide because the lines 'drinking eyes never opened' refering to the foetus :(

My theory that this is all about a guy on an phone call with his girlfriend who is trying to keep him on the phone to keep him from committing suicide. The part with “I feel numb I’ve been burning with and I’m realizing not it’s a terrible waste” is his attempt. But his attempts fails. When he wakes up he kinda tries to play it off, he doesn’t want help, that’s the “I can say oh wrap it in cinnamon” that’s him just trying to change the subject, he also says “I don’t even think about it” probably claiming that he doesn’t think about attempting again. And then the (what about?) his girlfriend is so worried. My hope for the character is that he finally accepts help. But it seems to be left open ended.

Why is this song so sad and depressing for other people it’s called suicide to ) :
@papersticker104 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure he's calling the suicide hotline and the phone ringing at the end is them calling him back after he hung up, but he was already gone "Oh, uh, I'll try again" "Wishing that the pills let you cry but I hate coping" "Hung up and put on hold" "My line is getting cold" - he wasn't answering anymore

I like to think that this song has a happy ending and the reason he leaves the phone ringing is because he doesn't need the hotline anymore. The "I hate hoping" line I think means "I hate hoping for change to come to me, I'm gonna change it myself." And the "I don't like thinking about it" line is in my view supposed to imply "I don't like thinking about the things that cause me grief, because thinking about it does nothing." There's also the lines of "I feel so good" and "What were you worried about" that make me think this has a happy ending. Now keep in mind that is just my interpretation, interesting to see how art as abstract as this brings in so many different viewpoint of the same thing.

Im imagining a situation were both of them are depressed and a relationship formed from sharing each other's anxieties through the phone. A precarious situation where one of them could die anytime so they keep on dialing their numbers checking up on them. The first one too hang up is the first one gone.

No it makes sense. This song (obviously) conveys a sense of loss. Well what have you lost? Your youth? Your partner? Further yet, i think this song is describing someone with bi-polar disorder. Or better yet someone in a relationship with one. A girl was diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder (or psychopathy) (hence the inability to cry) So this lady is taking pills to restore a normal chemical balance in the brain, but doesn't believe anything is happening so she goes on to get into drugs (most probably heroin because of the line "hoarder of quarters") and in one her Bi-polar rages. Kills the male, and this is just his last moments trying to get help that you're watching.

I feel this song, though from a kind of different perspective. My best friend my almost literal friend-soulmate has tried to commit suicide many times, and this song makes me think of the situation. The ringing is trying to reach out to the, and having a bad feeling when they don't answer or flat out reject your help. Then comes the anxiety and self blame. Later you try to breath and calm yourself down keeping composture and not letting your feelings out. Finaly in private you get to grieve, breaking down, trying to heal yourself and detach yourself emotionaly, but failing and repeating the cycle. This might be TMI but I kind of needed to vent. And to all the people who are considering suicide or selfharm please don't do it, because you not only are hurting yourself, but also the people around you that love you, even if you consider yourself unlovable or having no one, you do. Even then if you are certain no one irl does, then you've got me. Please don't harm yourselves. Love y'all.

I have finally came up with a decent theory behind this song. This song is about a man (the person who is singing this song) in a relationship with a girl. The hotline stands for the girl. "The hotline is getting cold" means that the girl is becoming a bad person. She develops drinking problems as well. This puts a lot of pressure on the fictional character who is singing this song. He tries to help, and he believes that one day he will go outside, or see everything positive, and see her okay. She takes medication, but it doesn't help. "Hoping that the pills let you cry" means he hopes that one day the medication will make her feel sympathy for him and see what she is doing wrong. But at one point he just gives up and dosen't want to deal with her anymore. He gets addicted to drugs, and lives his own life. But at the end of the song we hear the hotline ring or the girl trying to get a hold of him because she finally realized her mistakes. It has now turned around where he's addicted to the drug and she's trying to help him. It's an endless cycle of hell for them.

Something about baby hotline that keeps people from really getting what it means is that it switches perspectives a lot throughout the song. It starts from the hotline operator but changes to someone in the relationship telling the operator that the woman is cheap “hoarder of quarters” and also has no boundaries “with no boundary boredom” they even mention her pill addiction and how they wish to see her better one day. then it goes onto the woman telling the operator about her drinking and her constant irritation with the other member of the relationship “I insist somebody will die”. This is by no means anywhere near canon it’s just my interpretation of the lyrics/story
