@Pristine Artifact I feel that it's not just smoking when it comes to the grandfather. Yes, the smoking is sad, but more of the outright neglect of Claire comes from the fact that he is also addicted to the television. He doesn't spend enough time with Claire because he values watching his shows over paying enough attention to her. To Claire she is only seen as the cigarette go-getter because that's the only time the grandfather diverts his attention away from the television.

I can imagine what he means by "they fight over me like dogs!" Commercials are much easier to understand without a visual stimuli than tv shows are, same with singing. So that's probably why the only thing he can remember is the commercials and the singing, and that's eating away at his soul.
@clostridiumtetani99473 жыл бұрын
Yeah. No other explanation for it given commercials tend to be as "gentle" in getting information across as possible, for somebody to describe commercials like that either they're annoyed by having to deal with the commercial or, they don't understand what the hell it is.

The second "I'm popular here" hits like a train IT IS SO SMOOTH.
@hahaha_0NE Жыл бұрын
this may be an incorrect interpretation, but i like to think this is less about his smoking habits and more about underlying mental illness, and how the old man uses television as a coping mechanism. the entire section of the song where he's singing about what's happening on the tv is very revealing to me about his feelings. like with how claire imagines she's part of the bill board family, the old man listens to the tv and imagines he's part of their fun- "i'm popular here, they all sing to me" is a very good line to show this, and is further emphasised when the girls sing in response. "the girls dance too, i presume," "yeah we do," is also a good line. he imagines that he's able to be there and do everything that everyone else can do, and then when he's brought back to reality, he wonders why it's so easy for them to do what they do. he wonders why it's so easy for them to dance, laugh, and enjoy themselves. i don't think it's a stretch to say that the old man may be suffering from depression. it can be an utterly soul-crushing experience, and it can prevent you from doing even the most basic things. the old man's depression prevents him from going out and having fun like the people on tv, ("why does it sound so easy to breathe on tv",) he smokes as a coping mechanism for his depression, which in turn only makes him more depressed because of his addiction. it's a vicious cycle for him, only made worse by his subpar living conditions. i've tried re-writing this 3 times to better convey my point and compress it, sorry if it's still lacking.
@Kawn0 Жыл бұрын

I honestly feel alot of sympathy for this poor guy, my parents are amazing people but they're smokers. So i can imagine the perspective of them and its just sad, and while he sings it sounds like hes about to cry, his voice is jittery and soft and at the end he gets louder like hes gonna scream, I feel like he just deserves a hug :(

This character is one of the best metaphors I’ve ever seen. At least the way I interpreted it, he’s a metaphor for greed. Basically vegetating himself to the point where he can barely breath, literally blind to the pain he’s inflicting on himself and others.

I like to think the reason why the visuals are so Low-Poly is because of him being only capable to imagine shapes by touching the objects, so he doesn't have a clear idea of what they actually look like.

The grandpa is a bit more multifaceted than the other characters. The other characters are just selfish and mean, and even though there is apparently implied to be some trauma that caused them to act like that, it isn't an excuse. The grandpa, however, seems to be less aware of his effects on Claire. I don't think he really realizes how traumatizing it is for her that he's having her fetch him cigarettes, literally forcing her to let him slowly kill himself. He definitely isn't a good person, but there's a tragic layer to him that really doesn't resonate in the other characters like it does him.

Like most of you, I don’t even see this as referring to literal health problems. Thinking about the lyrics really puts it into a different perspective. TV makes life in general seem so easy. You watch it to live vicariously for the impossible things, you escape, pass time, etc. On the screen living the life you wants seems as easy as breathing.

The song is really about escapism (not just smoking), its shallowness, and its purpose, and how sad/lonely people will drown their entire potential in escapism just to feel a short release from crippling pain. It's a little bit similar to "House of the Rising Sun."
