fun fact. years ago (probably a decade) i listened to a jack white interview where he was talking about guitars. his choice of an ideal acoustic guitar is an old guitar that doesn't hold a tune perfectly. he likes the deficiencies. he believes the deficiencies add to the character of the masterpiece. so cool. this dude is an amazing artist.

I always think it would be a good basis for a horror movie. I walk my dog a lot (and never bring my phone) and I watch people at the park etc with their kids, pushing a swing, staring at their phones. Or walk by houses at night when the lights are on, and people mindlessly scrolling through their phones. it's weird and, like you said, creepy!

You never know what people are doing on their phones they might be checking stocks 1 minute a day like i do and you might have seen that 1 minute, all of those people might have been doing that at the same time, coincidences do exist but of course the people that constantly look at social media and stuff are idiots and are creepy

He is a true artist , not the best drummer- not the greatest guitarist or songwriter......he is an artist...the very VERY best of our generation!!!!!.......he is able to adapt to the surroundings and become the beckon that is needed to become the accomplished musician that will take the music to the people...all the people ..all ages....all colors....my 11 yrold knows every word of 'boarding house..' and I thank you Jack , if you ever read this , to make an album that is positive and uplifting and still gritty and brutal in places..my 11 yrold daughter is thrilled to say that Jack White doesn't need to write dirty words or subjects and just a song about 'walking a dog' can become my favorite song over the past year and years to come !!!!......thanx Jack!!!......much love!!!!!...best of health to you and yours.....see you at Riot Fest here in Chicago soon , love the Racounteers !!!!......the new album is BRILLIANT!!!!!!!........

Jack White is one of the most unique musicians of our time. As human beings who fluctuate in looks through our experiences I cannot see where any one of us have Stones to Throw. He is beautiful simply through his talent which most could possess but are far too fearful to initiate. His physical features will ALWAYS be unique because that is how God made him. Jack reminds me of a close friend I lost a few years back (he was Catholic, I'm Baptist). We would discuss these topics and more, plus get a laugh out of the ridiculousness of people. Funny, I just read the interview with Yorke for the New Yorker. Thom Yorke doesn't read music and this guy is self-taught. It dawned on me that that is why they are amazing artists. Thom Yorke, in the interview, talked about the industry and how his managers came to him and said that the industry was changing (musical tastes etc). It's no surprise why the music is shite now, mostly compared to earlier, the lyrics, for me especially. The integrity has gone.

I already posted this, but Ill do it twice -- yes at concerts put them down. But Jack says he dislikes them and has never owned one and finds them silly. I call HIPSTER on that. Something only a rich famous connected rockstar could reasonably say. And they are bad. They are tools. I think the "no cellphone" thing is very pompous/misdirected/out of touch. I like a lot of what he said here, I've seen him be harsher, hes pretty cool here; but cellphones are a tool - first i dont think he realizes how much he uses a cellphone indirectly each day, (through managers, assistants, travel agencies, etc). I dont think cellphones are evil in and of themselves, (they are totally annoying at concerts for sure, but being justified in saying "turn off your phone at the show", is a far cry form "don't own one at all they are silly"). And like being a vegetarian (a luxury not everyone on earth/through history can afford), he probably lives a life where he can get by without one, most of us literally cant... He says he doesn't want to be a luddite - but that kinda seems to fit here - I cant help but think this might be tied to the "analog vs. digital guy" he was saying he doesn't define himself as... The guy who only rolls his own cigarettes.... Or only drinks craft beer... I'm curious what he uses for communication then instead? I personally do not use my phone for games, I've never added a dog nose to a photo. I leave it on my desk all day at work barely checking it once. I dont walk and text ever, I dont talk and drive ever. I dont take films at concerts, (thats so annoying! I have taken a photo quick though). I dont talk loudly on it in public. I agree that there are terrible behaviors attached to cell phones. I dont do most of the "terrible/silly" cellphone behaviors. So be clear that not everyone uses the cellphone the same. But the average person is pretty dependent on its functions in a lot of ways a "rich rock star" may not be... For example; he travels a lot. He is a new Dad. Does he not call home? (thats bad). Does he not Facetime/Skype his baby? Why not!? Does he write letters instead? (That's wholly unnecessary). Does he use his wealth to just use hotel long distance? (Most of us can't afford that). Or does he use his manager's cell phone? (Hypocritical). A cell phone is a very functional tool for someone who travels (see below). There are also not payphones anywhere anymore. Or house phones. He has the luxury of being the guy people want to get a hold of so they will go out of their way to get him cellphone or not. *Like Bill Murray being able to not have an agent but set up his own 1800 number because he gets so many offers. But here on "regular people earth" most of us need texting and email to get a hold of people, and many of us have jobs that have to get a hold of us. And we need managers to help us find jobs Bill :) Do you really want to be in a car accident with no cell phone these days!? Or lock yourself out of the house with no cellphone? How about the easy tricks i use all the time - I park my car I take a photo of the parking lot number so I remmeber. I see a book or record I like, I take a photo to remember the title. I use my camera for stuff like that all the time. I use it as a flashlight. I use it as an MP3 player now (Spotify). I lost my TV remote and had to use my phone as my TV remote. Many people dont even have home phones. Ive been places where the only way to place a call then would be to borrow someone else's cellphone, (which i assume he does all the time, and defeats the purpose of his claim of being cellphone independent). Not only for the phone function - but as a calendar - does he carry a weekly planner? Or again does he rely on assistants to tell him where to go? (If so we dont all have that luxury). What about alarm clocks? i use my phone as my alarm clock at home and on the road. Who wakes Jack White up? A rooster (luddite)? Or again does he always have a nice hotel room with an alarm clock, (many bands sleep in the van or fans floors). Or again is the manager calling him to wake him up? (The manager who used a cell phone alarm to wake up, so again hypocritical). How does he tell what flights have been moved or delayed? i used the airline text heavily on a delayed flight last week. Again - he can judge because he probably flies private, or buses private. He doesn't have to keep track of his trips or arrange cars, just has someone else do it, (with a cell phone - if you see the pattern here), to tell him when and where to go. How does he call his Ubers? or do they send him private cars? I nee my call phone for that, just to get to his concert. Cant call an Uber... Or does he drive himself like i do - and need the GPS (I actually have a Garmin GPS in my car, and everyone who rides thinks I'm 100 years old, "why dont you just use Google Maps" is the #1 question I'm asked in the car). Its my photo camera. Its my video camera. Its how most indie bands would check their Twitter, Facebook and Bandcamp on the road to keep in touch with fans and promote their own shows -- he surely has the luxury of assistants doing that for him, (and they probably have laptops) - but again I feel he is probably pretty out of touch on that... IMO I think he was correct to say "as the guy without a cellphone, i dont know if he should judge others". Did you really agree that cellphones are this kind of evil silly thing? -- Again they can be used in terrible ways. but they are just a tool, and probably the most functional tool in the history of man besides perhaps the knife. Would we be better off still walking around with a watch, mp3 player, flashlight, TV remote, digital camera, video camera, planner, quarters, calling cards, travel alarm clocks, a laptop, etc.... thats just a stupid argument. Its all combined in this tool. I assume as a rich rock star surrounded by people/managers/etc - he is perhaps unaware of the need? -- and I'm sure if he hears a song and he wants to know what it is -- i have to whip out my Shazam app and find out myself; he probably just asks someone next to him, (who then uses THEIR Shazam app), so again i bet its pretty hypocritical of him. i could be wrong, he could be totally off the grid, I just doubt it. I think this was a pretty hipster thing to say. Like people "who dont believe in soap" and just stink. And act like I'm weak because i use soap? Like they "figured a truth about life out". Jack is 100% right about Detroit and the lack of stores--he isn't exaggerating. Still an issue today, but even more so in the 80's and 90's when he was coming up. There was a mass exodus from Detroit to the suburbs (or anywhere else) and the city became a food desert, where you could live in this major city and not have a grocery store anywhere near by. Maybe a corner liquor store, maybe a pawn shop, maybe a few restaurants, often fast food. No movie theater, no grocery store, no music shop, no book store, no clothing outlets. You had to leave the city and go to the suburbs for that stuff. Some of those things exist now, although mostly concentrated around Downtown Detroit. I just wanted to say my 2 cents because I know people think Jack White says those things to "build his reputation" or whatever. He's not making that up, I lived it myself.

Haven't seen a Jack White interview in quite some time but every time I do see one, including this one, I am always equally impressed by his outlook on life in general, his take on society, work ethics (in general) etc as much as I am with his amazing talents as a musician. He never comes across as being one who has "grown out of himself"; in other words, one who has lost touch with reality/real situations/his true self. I think we've had countless examples of just how hard it is for someone who becomes famous to stay grounded, to not forget where they came from, to not fall prey to the "limelight". I kinda think this guy might be one of the rare examples of how to handle fame and adoration the right way. I'm sure his life had changed immensely...for better and for worse. And, as far as wealth goes, who would blame someone for indulging themselves a little more when they have more to indulge with and that they worked hard to earn? But, he always seems to come across as not having lost his head or himself and I think that, in and of itself, is a pretty awesome accomplishment. I could be altogether wrong but if I am then he ought to consider branching out into the acting field because he could have some serious potential in that profession as well. 😉

nope, the white stripes started in 1998 and the raconteurs in 2005. he played with Brendan Benson briefly in "Jack White and the Bricks" in 1998 but that wasn't with LJ or PK.

Great interview. My music is rock from the sixties and early seventies. Jack is one of the few artists I have liked afterwards. I have not followed news for the same reasons as Jack. Really good to see musicians who want a better world.

Jack is the first artist that understand how to say it above the head of the other person, the language he uses utilize definites of constants to gauge his tongue. I hope I will meet him someday, he has the gravitaas of a universe.

i went to the fabulous fox theater in st. louis with a friend back in early 2000 to watch the white stripes on the "get behind me satan" tour. i wasn't a fan and only went because a good friend had tickets and invited me. it was the best show i've ever witnessed to this day and i've been to 100s of concerts. jack nailed it. i was literally appalled the entire show at his talents. i must admit i went to a jack white band concert years later at midland theater in kc and was disappointed. there was an element dialed in on his talents when it was just him and meg. i will always admire his talents and will always listen to his music. keep sharing your skills with us Jack. good interview.

He is a sharp guy. I agree with a bunch of what he said here. But the one that really got to me was the point of basic manners being lost in this last generation...they definitely have. My parents taught me to be polite and to think of others, and that seems to have been lost in society for some reason. Sucks. Hopefully it'll come back around. Peace.

What intelligent observations on bringing up kids, Jack. If you do your job early on they will be your friend in a Real sense further down the line. Kids need guidance - the endless choices on matters that they have no experience of are overwhelming and cause neurosis, leading to kids becoming avoidant and their choices become 'the default no' - they end up not knowing how to jump in and try things. Adults need to give them that security to know what's reasonably worth the risk and what really isn't. That and manners - good manners open up the ability to communicate with anyone on the level and so get through the barriers that life throws up. Bravo mate!

Really enjoyed this interview, found it inspiring. I admire Jack White's passion and dedication to music. Knowing when to stop is so important in art. I do visual art, but I haven't been able to ever get a handle on doing it digitally, because you never have to screw up and start all over. You can make all these variations on the same piece, try out everything and it's endless. To be fair, it's the similar for me when painting with acrylics or oils, that's why I don't consider myself to be a painter. Only slight disagreement is I think there are some on social media who share when they think an experience is really awesome. Yes, social media can be incredibly shallow, but it can also be a place to share inspiring experiences and ideas. That said, I love that people weren't able to use phones at The Raconteurs show I went to last month. No distractions by folks trying to record and photograph, everyone focused on the show and having a great time.

This is a great interview. Jack White speaks with an intelligence about music that is sorely missed from the industry in general. He clearly understands the effect real music should have on people, and the value it has when it is not driven by pure commercialism (Ed Sheeran, take note). This is quite inspiring, and validates for me why I find all his music so engaging. I especially loved the Raconteurs project, and I'm really happy that it's not over.
