I've just finished 'Stoner' by John Williams and I am genuinely surprised by how much I loved it. It's a book that exceptionally navigates the ways in which ordinary people grapple with the presence of absence and the ways in which they attempt to carve meaning in their lives. It's a book that exists in the shadow of a stoic silence as it explores the passion keeping a life ignited and the loneliness that manages to creep and settle into one's bones while doing so.

Hi Jack! I love your content, but I'm also having a request. I've always been a really slow reader and I am also a super busy person which leaves me almost no time to read. I watch my tbr list grow longer and longer but I'm afraid it's just unrealistic for me to read all these books before I retire. Could you maybe do a video about books you think someone with little time on their hands should absolutely read? Just a small collection of "Everybody should've read that". Maybe also books who won't take someone busy 3-4 months to finish (which is for me 1000 pages approx). I'd love to see something like this. Keep up the good content and have a beautiful Christmas!

One of her stories called The Christmas Rose is in the Penguin Book of Christmas Stories clothbound classic, and it's my standout favourite from the first half of the collection that I've read so far over the last 2 years - I even took it round my friends house to read it out loud to them last week. Sadly I felt the exact same way about The Pumpkin Spice Cafe and The Christmas Tree Farm. The covers and small town cozy vibes were a 10/10, but the characters weren’t likable or memorable at all. 😭 I prefer cozy mysteries when I need a cozy fix. Oftentimes they’ll have an array of lovable, whacky characters and a slow burn romance that is just perfection.

Just a lil note as it was mentioned, Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm is a sequel of sorts. Stella Gibbons' is best known and plauded for her first novel, Cold Comfort Farm written in the 30s. So if you don't dig xmas at CCF, you might still like Cold Comfort Farm. It's a parody of romantic pastoral novels (think Thomas Hardy). Or if the book doesn't appeal, there was a rather fun movie adaptation (featuring Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley, Ian McKellen, Rufus Sewell, etc.)

As to your question…’Lola in the Mirror’ by the incomparable Trent Dalton has been sitting in my TBR pile for MONTHS! I really really want to read it, but I’ve put it off for so long because I love his books so much, I won’t want to finish it! I keep thinking, I’ll hang on till his next book is out so I’ll have another one to read straight after..but at the same time, I desperately want to read ‘Lola..’! 😅 Does anyone else ever put off reading a book by a favourite author cos you can’t bear to finish it, knowing there isn’t another one out to read??
