She Froze at the TOP of SHARP EDGE

Today i wanted to give Sharp Edge an attempt whilst heading up to Blencathra. Emma tagged along today as well but unfortunately she struggled with vertigo and had to turn around. Still made it to the top though but via a different route.

Thanks for the invitation, Emma, that's a beautiful walk. I walked Striding Edge when I was 9 with no problems; when I went back twenty years later I was completely overwhelmed with vertigo. Not fun. Jack - walking and talking good, walking with a companion to chat with better.

I know exactly the feeling. I'm usually okay as long as there's either a reassuring cliff wall going up one side of the path (so there's a 'safe' way to lean) or if I'm going down. But climbing up a ridge with drops both sides sets alarm bells ringing.

I don't blame Emma at all. I would have done exactly the same. When I was a kid, I would have hopped along up there with no problem, but as I got older the vertigo kicks in when you least expect it. It's not the height, it's that feeling of a sheer drop on both sides and slick rocks under your feet that does my head in. Well done her for trying though! 👍 Edit to add: I would have said exactly the same thing she did when I finally made it up there😂😂

Sensible from her. Ultimately it’s those that ignore their gut instinct who end up in trouble. I’ve done sharp edge probably four times and there was one occasion when the cross wind was so bad, accompanied with poor weather, and even I boycotted it. And I’ve no issue with exposure. Getting up is optional, getting down safe is mandatory! Thanks for sharing pal.

Hey Susan i loved flying the drone around the edges and the tarn. The drone is my right hand when I'm out in the wild these days i couldn't do without it. There were other people also turning around so quite common to see it. Definitely support her decision :)

I’ve experienced both sensations so totally understand why Emma pulled out. Once you head down that lower path to the right, getting back up onto the right is hard. First time I did this in cloud and turned back. Second time waited for the perfect calm sunny day with lots of others up there to help with the route. Never shame in turning back, especially when there’s another route up

I went up Halls fell ridge and then up sharp edge many years ago, great day out, in my late sixties now, couldn’t do it today. There’s no shame in turning back, keep safe, the mountain will still be there another day.

Hey Alex it's not often i see someone else actually making a video out there and i love to hear the opinion of another creator in the Lakes! Sharp Edge, (Foule crag) is FAR more risky that striding / swirral Edge.... Done it 4 or 5 times and the difference between wet and dry conditions is astounding, Always look for weather forecasts before going, but on one occasion got hit by the inevitable rainfall halfway down, and it certainly "focussed the mind" when moving along sections of the very ridge with wet polished slabs on either side. I've come to the conclusion that I'm now a bit too out of condition to do it again. but well done with the video... only wish we had "go-pros" back in the day.

@@jackasnacks I'd be a liar to say I had.... probably my biggest regret as I'll never do it now. We preferred the lakes and the highlands, and then spent some years in the alps giving "via ferrata" a go (as we we're not truly "mountaineers"), but my advice would be the same as for any exposed route, proper preparation (equipment / weather forecast) and as important but often overlooked, make sure you're in peak condition, no "feeling under the weather", as even the tail end of a cold can cause light headedness / loss of balance when exerting yourself in colder thinner air... not something you want to experience when traversing an exposed ridgeway. Look forward to a video showing you enjoying the route, take care and enjoy that fresh air and the experience. P.S They have a "via ferrata" at the slate quarry on Honister pass in the lakes, its a nice little taster for a few hours, maybe open up a new aspect of exposed routes to you as it did us over the last 10 years or so. If you like it there are plenty of routes across Europe to explore, and it will take you to areas and vistas you would likely never cover if you're not a mountaineer.

Good to be out in the mountains feller. You are and most aren't so fair play as Sharp edge is a classic. As you took directions from a local did you have a map and compass? If not I politely suggest you always do. And maybe Emma would be better with proper boots? Saves the ankles. Sprained ankle on moutains are dodgy. And at least Emma had a go! Good to see you tried, but right decision for her.

He also said we probably wouldn't make it back to the nearest coast which is about 8 hours away... Hallsfell ridge approach is a great climb too for the not so faint hearted . Iv done both but heart was in my mouth. It’s not straight forward but with time ,care and holding your nerve and it’s doable .

I went up on my own. Very confident but had a wobble in the middle. I can get anxious over things and once it hit me I felt like I needed to get off. Really really had to dig deep but I ended up doing it instead of going back down. I kinda feel I need to do it again now though. I think it would help me.

Well I don't blame her. Of the ridges I've been on in this country only Crib Goch has a comparable sense of exposure albeit Crib Goch is much longer. Striding Edge is like a motorway in comparison. There are a few bits where you feel a stumble or trip could see you take a big fall, it's narrow all the way and the rock is slippery. I obviously haven't been on hikes like the bypass path or pinnacles on Liathach or anything where you might need ropes like Aonach Eagach before people leap in and tell me there are more exposed ridges and hill climbs. Of course there are, but as challenges go for a regular walk or hike Sharp Edge is up there. I've done alot of hiking in the Alps too and based on what I've seen walks this exposed in Austria or Switzerland would have a via ferrata for you to use if you wished.

Beautiful weather for it, I imagine that the Ridge scramble would be a no go in the wet. Yes, really appreciate the narration but I prefer the impromptu, what's going through your head, narration rather than a scripted one. Yes a script would give all the salient points but you did that on the fly. You have a winning formula just as you are. There is a guy called Dean who I watch quite a lot and he has the same opening lines and it is too like a presenter. As for Em, I'm with her on this one. I've just started the Ethel Challenge (it's knackering, but I'm old you are young. Since covid I just haven't got the lung capacity and stops are frequent) I've been to the edge of the Roaches and it wasn't so much vertigo as a Lemming feeling. It is quite unnerving so I fully understand how she felt and it is far safer and wiser to take the route she did than the road less travelled. For both her and me. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you did it for us and showed the views in all their glory but I'm with Em on this one. The blues of the water were beautiful, I bet you didn't have that dip. Bloody cold but it did look inviting. Fantastic vlog, love this version of your vlogs. You should see the complete BS that comes out of my mouth. I find that when I get tired the brain to mouth connection gets cut and the wrong words come out. It's a great little channel and long may it continue. Looking forward to some more walking with drones, and Em if she wants to. I've only done 5 of my Ethel Challenge whilst it was nice to have the company, and I will do that again, it's also nice just to chat crap at the phone. I find that the spontaneity goes a bit with company. But as I have 90 more Ethels to do I'm sure I'll get the majority on my own. There is really something special about ticking one off the list even if my list are all 500m and sub 500m. Hey, you got to start somewhere. Thanks for the shout out. It did make me smile. Enough orating and sorry for the diatribe but this one was beautiful. Appreciate it.

Nice one Chris, appreciate the comments you leave on my videos they do help give me a sense of purpose when i'm out recording. Especially when people comment frequently it does mean a lot! I've known Em for a long time and done lots of adventures with her. If you look back at some of my old videos from about 3 years ago you will see her appear in them. I know what she is capable of and she loves a good adventure but this shows that we're always learning our limits. Even though i'm filming we would never push eachother to do something outside of our boundaries. Getting home is always more important. Good to hear you've took on a big challenge with the Ethels and i hope you create lots of good memories walking them. Shame to hear about the effects covid had on you hopefully time will sort you out there. I'm not sure if i ever had covid or not!

@@jackasnacks When I had it I can almost describe it as a drug rattle, not done one myself but seen first hand being a 20 year Prison Psych Nurse. I felt aching in my bones and muscles, cold to the core, sweating profusely, head feeling like it was going to explode, sinus' on fire. Hot sweats, cold sweats. This took 10 days to run its course. We were at a point where we discussed phoning an ambulance but people were being separated in Hospital and we actually had the conversation that if we were going to die we would die together in bed. That is how bad we felt. After the 10 days we tried to get fresh air. Attempted Thors Cave but after a mile walking on the flat we were exhausted, absolutely wiped out. Absolute exhaustion for 3 months after this and 2 years on we still come home and to bed. Still wiped out but not exhausted. Amanda lost her taste and smell and whilst it didn't affect my breathing I could tell it had taken its toll. GPs aren't interested. You mention covid and no one wanted to see you. I had it again at Easter this year but after 2 jabs and a booster it was a lighter version, thankfully. I was walking the Great Ridge with Anita 2 weeks ago (see vlog if you want a laugh, or just subscribe and don't watch, I'd be grateful for that) and she was saying she never had covid. The next week it hit her. People are getting complacent in shops 99% no masks but having experienced it twice I'm taking no chances. I hope you don't experience anything we did but if you ever do then hydration, Paracetamol, brufen, sinus tablets (non Paracetamol ones) and just go to bed is the key. I have seen Em on previous hikes as I'm about completed with your back vlogs. I'm grateful for the Strid vlog as that was the way I found your channel. Just about viewed that guys vlogs. We are all individuals and I'm glad that people vlog in their own way. I hate just to see the same format on all channels as you lose the personal touch. You just keep putting them out and we'll keep watching. Again apologies for the diatribe and catch you on the next adventure. Stay Safe and Stay Well.

I know this is a bit of a niche thing, but it would be really cool to see a 3D VR180 video of one of these ridges, because then you'd really be able to appreciate the height. The only thing is, VR cameras are expensive, but maybe you could hire one with some insurance. Just an idea :D But btw if you do this, don't be tempted to go with 360 VR, it won't be 3D so it won't convey the height.

I went to see the doctor and told him that i had walked to the surgery and was feeling very dizzy and didn't know if i could make it home.He said " Have you got vertigo ? " to which i replied " No, i live just down the road "

Im 14 as of now just done this with my dad it was pretty fun and the views were amazing, we were there at the top when the northern lights happened it was amazing! I hate heights but mountaineering is so fun

I have had medical vertigo a few times just at home and I couldn't even stand up in the house without toppling over from overcorrecting the feeling of falling sideways, it was really scary, so I cannot imagine how it would feel to get vertigo on a ridge!

Love your videos and I must try this edge Not trying to be clever but vertigo is an ear condition that makes you dizzy wherever you are, I have it Acrophobia is fear of heights 👍

I can’t put my finger on what it is, I’m not afraid of heights I’m not sure what triggers the feeling it’s very strange! 😅 I think the vertigo is a symptom when I’ve tried to understand it a bit more I do have anxiety which won’t help 😂

@@emmanelles8537 Could it be a cumulative effect of the ground falling away all round *and* you're climbing still higher i.e. making the situation worse? What I find is, if there's a nice reassuring hillside up on one side of the path, or if I'm going downhill, that usually alleviates the sensation. They say 'don't look down' but personally, looking down doesn't usually bother me, it's looking up that brings it on. NOT saying this applies in your case but it's a possibility?

I've never been up Sharp Edge, but I've come down it a couple of times. Each time I've had the wobbly legs which was horrible. I found it much more scary than Striding Edge on Helvellyn.

Yeah the page i was reading said to have 2 dry days before going up. Glad it wasn't raining because that slate looked slippy without water on it. Rain would take that to the next level i think.

I understand that in the Lakes the extensive grazing of sheep on the open fells over the centuries kept trees and shrubs from growing. There was a documentary recently discussing plans to stop sheep farming and return the fells to their ‘natural’ condition with native trees and floral…

Me a friend and my dog came down sharp edge a few weeks ago and what a phenomenal experience and loved every minute but i think going up must be a less scary experience than going down, great video
