The Gribin Ridge is ideal as a first scramble. It is grade one (the easiest of the scrambling grades) and it has a choice of lines to suit your appetite for excitement.
In this episode of my Mountain Days Vlog I head up for an early morning scramble, enjoying the ridge to myself in the sunshine and then flying down from the summit of the Glyderau.

Brilliant. When we lived in North Wales I often used to climb this ridge in the early morning just as you have done. A superb route on marvellous terrain with exceptional views. Great video.

A year or two ago I camped on the patch of grass at the top on a perfect moonlit night. To my surprise, a couple of hours later some men walked past having climbed y Gribyn by head torch. They admired the view for a few minutes, then went back down from whence they came. They missed your views on the way up! Great video thank you.

That’s very kind, thank you very much. That must have been the Siabod Cafe, we meet there each day for the courses we run so it probably was me 😀 It’s lovely to hear when the videos have inspired people, keep enjoying the mountains and all the best. 😀👍

Nice video. I'm a big fan of the Gribin and it's even better if you incorporate the "False" Gribin start from the lake.

You make it all look so effortless Rob. I would love to do that ridge but the exposure looks quite intimidating for me

It’s never as bad in real life as the videos suggest 😀 It’s a great route because of the choice of lines, just choose a dry sunny day 😀👍

Brilliant vid Rob, the mountains look spectacular! Quick question, what's the craic with low flying jets...is there a buffer with the minimum height for jets and maximum for paragliders? Hope all's well, Dave👍
@RobJohnson
@RobJohnson Жыл бұрын
The low flying jets are a definite objective hazard as they are in the same airspace as us. We can notify them of our intention to fly and avoid the regular routes they use, such as the Ogwen Valley. We are also less likely to see them that early in the morning. There are some close calls though!

Fantastic film to watch Rob. Could I trouble you with a question? How long would a slow steady pace from Ogwen cottage to Castell y Gwent and back via y gribin take?
@RobJohnson
@RobJohnson Жыл бұрын
You could easily make it a leisurely day out, say 5 hours round trip at a slow, steady pace.

What do you do with the remote while scrambling? I would love to make better use of active track and pre composed shots while biking but don't want to just leave the remote on the floor and ride off!
@RobJohnson
@RobJohnson Жыл бұрын
For this I just carried it as I scrambled but for my previous one where I was biking and skiing I put it in my pocket. That works better if you take the sticks off and use the DJI remote with the built in screen rather than the one with a phone. I’ve also tried a lanyard but that doesn’t work well on a bike as it swings in the way, works well for steeper scrambles though.

Evening Rob, looking online for this route and it would appear there are two gribin ridge routes in snowdonia, is that correct? Can you confirm which one this is?

I certainly wouldn't class it as a Grade 1, as there are no real difficulties or challenges, its far easier than the East ridge of Grib Goch, which is most certainly grade 1 There are numerous alternatives up the ridge, some of them a lot easier than others. My first time up the Gribyn, was when i was taking part in the short course in the Welsh 1000s, starting at Ogwen, and finishing on Snowdon, but ascending the Gribyn to reach Glyder Fawr. I was apprehensive and a bit scared, as i had never attempted the Gribyn route from llyn Bochlwyd, as i thought it was too exposed, Well i had to attempt it, as it was part of the Welsh 1000s short course, and i could not believe how easy it was. I am afraid of heights and dislike exposure, but the Grybin is more a grade 2, not Grade 1.

Hi Peter. Grade one is the easiest of the scrambling grades with grade two routes being harder, generally having a higher likelihood of a slip and a greater consequence. The Gribin gets given grade one in each of the scrambling guidebooks and I think that’s about right. There are several harder grade one routes here in Snowdonia and also a couple of easier ones but I’d say it sits low in the grade. That and the ease with which you can avoid the difficult bits make it great as a first grade one scramble. It’s also in a beautiful location which is a definite bonus 😀
