Demystifying Tartan, Hybrid Crops & Seed Enhancement in HM:AWL

I never knew about Tartan when I was younger. So I was absolutely stunned to see him in Takakura's house in my sisters playthrough! When I asked her what he was and how she got him, she couldn't give a definitive answer because I think she'd gotten the cutscene completely by chance. I feel like I missed out on farming not having known about hybrids, but I intend to amend this when the remake releases!

I'm crossing my fingers that Hybrids are a part of the remake! We'll never know until marvelous confirms it. This game really does require Hybrid Cropping to get the most of it, and they don't really explain it to well in-game lol

@@JackDuckGoose they are confirmed! There is a screenshot of tartan on the Japanese promo website for the game, it is still in Takakura's house but has not been confirmed if it is unlocked in the same way yet or made more user friendly etc.

Some more information: You can check what enhancements you have on a seed by either examining it in your inventory by pressing Y, or by holding the seed in your hand and pressing A when NOT in a field. Examining them also tells you what seasons they grow in. So fortunately you don't have to use Tartan to check every time lol. Some hybrid crops say they "can't grow" in low quality soil and the gemsoil allows them to grow in any soil. I think that means they'll die if planted in low quality soil but I haven't experimented a lot with them.

It's funny you mentioned that! In the most recent twitch stream, I looked at the enhanced crops and noticed that there is flavor text explaining season and soil for each plant. You're entirely correct! A gemsoil changes the soil to "any" and a happy lamp changes the season to "any." The mystery seems to be solved, but you never know with AWL. There could be some added effect that the devs baked in and didn't explain lol

AWL was my favorite game of all time. I was 6 years old when I first played it and my dad would sit with me and read me the dialogue. I have the biggest emotional attachment to this and I am buying a nintendo switch solely so I will be able to play the story of seasons version next summer

I love that story! I played it with my brothers and we had no clue what we were doing. Just running around giving out gifts and talking to villagers was fun lol. I'm probably going to get it on PC so that, if there is mod support, I can have as much customization as possible!

super helpful! even though i played a TON of anwl as a kid, i was still kinda new to the series and always found the wonderful life games kinda confusing lol. and since i was a kid i kept using the extra money/item second controller exploit, so i think i just had random hybrids from that and never learned how to use them 😅 i didnt even know about tartar til i saw my older cousin had him! i never bothered befriending most non marriageable characters when i was younger lol, so i wasnt about to get this one by chance. thank you for taking the time to put the vid together! this goes way deeper than i thought :O!!!

No worries! Tartan is a super confusing mechanic and I definitely didn't come about him organically when I was a kid lol. Hopefully, the remake takes the time to explain some of these mechanics a little bit better. Everything in AWL and AnWL was shrouded in mystery since they didn't hold your hand in explaining anything

I think the failure music might be kabuki play music? I never got far with hybridization in my og playthru (i only remember making a pomato and getting the green mark on it very vaguely)as a kid but its so cool seeing how deep the mechanics go.

When I was on sick leave a few years ago I was so bored I made a spreadsheet for this game (but Another Wonderful Life) for exactly how many of each crop/fish I need to make each dish and then what seeds I'd need for the hybrid ingredients... It was so complicated but fun!! Please consider doing Another Wonderful Life too, there's additional 100% requirements since you need to collect all her outfits!!!

One thing I wish for the remake is to be able hybrid the seeds more than 1 When you want to have 60 Rare Crops and have to sit there waiting Tartan spit it out one by one it gets old way too fast

what would happen if the S rank crop you used also has the green and/or black dots? would it effect how the tree seed changes? or would it not let you do it at all because you can't use those flowers for the tree seeds?

That's an interesting thought that I haven't tested! I'll look into it and see what happens lol EDIT: I thought about your question some more, and I remembered that after the crop grows, the effects of gemsoils and happy lamps are lost. Effectively, the flowers only affect crop seeds and, much like a lot of things in this game, are limited to one use.

@@JackDuckGoose that makes sense, would be a good detail to add in a follow up video if you ever do one. the tartan video is honestly super helpful. i remember so much misinformation's years ago trying to get him, like how it HAD to be in winter which is BS haha i got him in spring y2. I also found out, to get the great field, you don't actually have to hybridize anything. i got tartan, got the option to hybrid crops, i saved, tried to hybrid a potato and strawberry since that's what i had, and it failed, so i loaded my game so i didn't lose my crops, and then on the way back over i talked to takakura and he offered the field. but because i loaded my game, i hadn't hybridized anything yet, so you just need tartan, or at least get him to the option where you can hybridize crops. Also, do certain crops have a higher fail rate than others? i'd say at least 50% of the time that combo failed and i had to reload my game because i had 5 sets to hybrid and didn't want to lose any, was a lot of back and forthing xD it looks like just about any crop can be hybridized? there are some pretty huge lists online considering there are so few normal crops. also only the first successful hybridizing of that crop pair gave me the positive music, every other time i was given the " fail " music no matter if i got a potato seed or the hybrid. I am playing on the PS2 version tho, so that could potentially effect how some of these things work. i know some of the dialogue and stuff isn't the same in the game cube one and a few mechanics could have been tweaked. Tartan also does say he hates carrots and anything that looks like a carrot will make him throw up, so would carrot like crops be harder to hybridize successfully? I know there are carrot hybrids, i did the get 99 of everything cheat on the gamecube in like 2007 so i know they exist lol

I'll probably include that note in a future 100% video. This game is lousy with rumors purported as fact on the internet lol. In regard to your questions, The PS2 version of AWL is the SE, more closely linked with AnWL. In that version, you're correct, you only need to have seen the Tartan cutscene to get the big field. I don't think certain combinations of crops have better or worse odds. My understanding of Hybrid Crop odds thus far is that the horoscope has a lot to do with success and failure. On a recent stream, I went 4/5 on hybrid attempts on a lucky day. I have yet to try it on a normal/bad luck day, but the 80% success rate seems significant enough to me. It's true that almost every crop can be hybridized. Once you get into second and third generations is when you really need a guide since some of the hybrids will be able to be crossed with others, but some won't. Marvelous seemed to decide that over 100 3rd generation crop hybrids would have been insane. I'm not too sure about the music in the PS2 edition. I won't speak too much on it because I haven't played it, but I know that game is much glitchier and buggy than the GC, so that could explain the success/failure music. Regarding carrots, I honestly have no clue. That could just be flavor text, or carrot hybrids could have a lower rate of success. Something to test lol

Great question! Some seeds don't combine to make anything, especially when you get to the second generation. If you're combining B rank seeds together, there is the possibility that the hybrid fails and you get one of the original two seeds back.

@JackDuckGoose That's fair, I've currently been hit with the nostalgia bug so I've gone and spent a bit too much money on buying a plethora of games I played as a kid. AWL being on that list. (From the few vids I've watched on your channel there's already been a buncha shtuff I never even knew like the hybridization) I suppose a few things would be: After you make a super seed and grow it into a plant, if you use the seed machine on said produce do they keep the 'super seed buffs'? Is that bannana produce into seeds the best way to make G? Whats the actual benefit of having high rated seeds (like do they increase the chance to have produce be high as well)? And lastly, this being something I couldn't find any guides online, what are some cool 'secrets' or just lesser known game things you'd like to share or recommend? Like as a kid the yeti, and forest, and all that cool stuff seemed so interesting but never addressed. Also, I may be misremembering, but I barely got any cutscenes when I played back in the day.

@@bubbly_ghost To answer your questions; Unfortunately, the only "buff" super seeds retain after they've gone back through the seed maker is the Grade. The plant anytime and any field bonuses go away. If you're playing the original edition, I find that the banana seeds are the most reliable way to make G in the early game. Once you get into hybrid crops, there are some third generation Hybrid tree seeds that sell for more, but I didn't have access to those until year 5. Having high rated seeds are kinda weird. They sell for a little bit more than B's, but thats about it on a surface level. Under the surface, S rank seeds are super important for hybridzing. When you start combining seeds with Tartan, S rank seeds have a much higher (almost 100% when combining two S rank seeds) probability of successfully crafting 2nd and 3rd generation hybrid crop seeds. Also, 3rd generation hybrid crops need to be S ranked if you want to use the happy lamp buff. If they're B or A rank, they will die if planted in the wrong season, even when happy lamped. There are a lot of cool secrets in this game. Mukumuku (the yeti) was introduced to provide the character with a music disc. That feature didn't make it into the original edition but is present in the Special edition. My favorite secret has to be that the Harvest Goddess does exist in the AWL universe. You never get to see her, but there are a couple of cutscenes with the harvest sprites that say she's sleeping underneath the spring by their tree house.

I am playing on the OG game as its what I played as a kid, and from what I've heard just looks better; Ifrom what I understand the special edition fixed a lot of things and added content, but it doesnt have the same vibe. Ahh so that's why you were getting seeds to S rank. And cool! I always loved the mythical sort of flavor hints the game had, shame they weren't expanded into further. When the new game releases, I hope we get a lot more of. . .well, everything, haha.
