This popped up on my KZbin recommendations just as I was cutting 9ut 5he Cashmerette Club Kimball Bomber Jacket. Perfect timing!! Tamlyn: Last summer, I made the Deer and Doe Nenuphar Jacket out of linen and I did a Hong Kong finish on the seams. What made it easy was an adjustable bias binding foot for my machine. Once I made the bias strips, attaching them was as easy as serging the edges! Really! It was definitely worth the investment. Good luck!

Loving Jacket January! Fab patterns ladies and so different, so it will be great to see them all. Fab fabric too for each one. I've got plans to make the Lagan Coat from Itch to Stitch. Not a jacket, but similar enough, so your challenge is giving me the boost to get started on this coat, so hopefully will join along too. Thanks ladies 😻👍👏

I am going to make the cashmerette bomber jacket but I want to finish my style arc kennie top first. I made the Patina which is very similar to the Kennie. I have decided I will just hack the Patina collar/sleeve if I want to do it again because the instructions and even drafting were a little better from my perspective. I hope style arc continues to improve the instructions over time so I find their patterns more enjoyable to sew. I love their aesthetic.

Hello lovely ladies! So glad you're starting the new year off with "Jacket January". It's just what I needed to get back into my Chanel jacket challenge which I imposed upon myself last October! It's a very slow (but enjoyable) process as I'm following the original method of quilting the lining to the outer fabric and hand stitching all the lining seams over the seam allowances. I've let it sit for the last couple of months to do other less time consuming projects. Off now to re thread my machine and get at it!! I always look forward to your individual vlogs and now your new Sewl Sisters channel. Thank you all for the great content and encouragement you bring to the sewing community. Wishing you much success in all you do. Best wishes from a 77 yr young sewist in Toronto, Canada!

Style arc are amazing patterns! If you are an experienced sewist, you'll easily cope with the instructions. Sometimes, it's a relief not to have to wade through pages of very detailed information. Having said that, I've been sewing for donkey's years and still make silly mistakes but have got much better at sorting them out! 🤣 Good luck with the channel ladies! 🥰

I have been needing a new jacket/coat for over a year now, and I am really hoping that now is the time I will be able to get it done. I am hoping to use the Peppermint Magazine West End Jacket to make a winter coat I can wear into stores and not sweat buckets in. I want to use all 100% cotton fabrics so that it’s breathable, but I am going to make it lined (with batting between the layers) so it’ll still be warm. This pattern does not include a lining or layers of fabric, so it’ll be a challenge to see how it turns out. I’m not 100% sure how I am even going to do this, but I am motivated so hopefully that will supply the drive. Thank you all so much for fostering this community. I don’t have many people in my life that sew and even fewer that sew clothes, so it is nice to have a community at least online. Best of luck to you on your jackets!

I've have 4 jackets I want to make. I've had the Metro blazer from Love Notions ever since it came out, I want to make the Itch to Stitch jean jacket and Poas Jacket, I was testing the pattern when I had to had eye surgery for a hole in my retina. So I could finish it, then I lost a bunch of weight and what I have partially done is too big. Great idea for a challenge.

My jacket pattern II want to use is the Nova coat. While it seems reasonably straightforward, I’m up cycling a plaid wool blanket from my MIL. It is in purple and yellow. Quite a statement jacket. I’m lining it with a Jacaranda coloured lining. (Lilac/purple/bluish colour). Challenge will be pattern patching with limited fabric! It’ll be a challenge too as we are in the height of summer down under!

Ooooh, all those jackets look great! The timing of this video is awesome as I've been looking at Jackets and Coats for the past two weeks. I've had fabric waiting for nearly 4 years now and just haven't actually pulled myself together enough to get it done. The joys of sewing with ADHD. However, I'm in desperate need of a coat or jacket this winter and have been trawling through patterns trying to make a decision. Some of the Style Arc ones caught my eye, but I think I finally decided last night that I'm going to do the SewTinaGivens Harlow Jacket. However, that quilted fabric and the pattern that Ruan spoke about are very tempting too!

Tamlyn, don't be put off by Style Arc's reputation - great patterns, and at your experience level, you'll be fine. They have expanded the instructions a bit from the early days, but I find them pretty good. Though it's good for beginners I personally find some patterns have too much instruction and I've forgotten what's written by the time I reach the end of a paragraph! BUT - really check the sizing - I've always found Style Arc's sizing to be generous.
@kazzie5114 Жыл бұрын
I was going to say similar! Some of the pattern companies like Tilly give you a sewing lesson which is great for beginners; Style Arc assumes a knowledge of sewing and gives you the instructions to make that particular pattern. I hope that I am not causing offence if I say that Hot Patterns' instructions leave a LOT to be desired, and I say that as someone with about 40 years sewing experience.
@lindahopkins4389 Жыл бұрын
I love Style Arc patterns and have made several. I am much less experienced than you and have not had problems with the instructions. Style Arc also are now offering video tutorials for some of their patterns and for specific techniques, eg, the double bodice on some of their dresses which I found useful!

Three totally different jackets, this is going to be fun! I LOVE my Logan Shacket! I made mine from a very inexpensive pink and grey wool and it was perfect for a Canadian late fall, early winter. I did downsize maybe 2 sizes because I didn't want it to be too oversized but there is still room for a cozy sweater underneath. I chose to do a Hong Kong finish and it was easy to do. The only thing I changed was to move the chest pockets to below the waist just because I wanted usable pockets. The side seam pockets are also a perfect size. I would suggest to Ruan to practice those welt pockets on scrap fabric first. I love the look of a shorter jacket but I just feel more comfortable in a longer jacket. I follow Janine Sews, a fellow Canadian and she has made a white Logan Shacket and it is beautiful and versatile. I have some white heavier weight denim I bought years ago that I would make a lovely shacket from but have decided to make a longer length jean jacket from a pattern I probably have had for 20 years. But who knows I might change my mind and make an entirely different jacket. Good luck ladies with your jackets and I look forward to seeing the finished results.

I have made the Shacket from Style Arc out of Forrest green needle cord and I put wide elastic on the wrists as I found the sleeves really wide, I am not very tall and the sleeves just consumed me. Once the elastic brought them in, it was much better, I live in Australia and it’s ideal for my winters.

Thank you ladies. I've promised my son I'll make him an Ilford Jacket but the first toile didn't go well. I struggled with the sleeve placket and the size was not good on him. I love the idea! @Tamlyn, I've used a Style Are Patterns once and found the fit of the pattern pieces not that great. So my tip for you is to check especially the collar pieces before sewing. @Ruan, before sizing down I would have a closer look at the angels of the shoulders. I found Fibre Mond Patterns have a huge ammount of "falling down" shoulders. When sized down you might lift the whole Jacket to your ears when lifting your arms. Also I would consider a grey lining and buttons, black is such a harsh contrast. @ Rachel, I loooove the lining. Had a lining in blue-green once. Good luck to you three!

Tamlyn, The Logan Shacket is a brilliant pattern. I’ve made 3 so far. I have done flat felled seams ( I think that’s what they’re called) . I cut the yoke on one of them on the bias and that one is really comfy- extra bit of give. I had to shorten the length and so had to make a chain stitch to connect the pocket to the front seam to stop them dropping below the hem. It is a really straight forward sew.

Oh, I can’t wait to see the quilted jacket Ruan is making. Even after more than 60 years at a sewing machine I am not a fan of StyleArc, and the lack of instructions are concerning. I’m looking forward to seeing how Tamlyn does with it. I love the fabrics that Rachel chose but bomber jackets just aren’t a good look for a 70+ year old woman. Lol.
