haha sounds like mine. I have a 2m tall one on a raised mound quality soil, compost and mulch watered and kept with good moisture but not too wet 1 new leaf 1 dead leaf 1 new leaf 1 dead leaf fertilized with organic Fert and microorganism foliage spray got another direct in clay soil same thing actually i think it is possibly better in leaf count despite being shorter. I got told by some one the roots may have not like the transplant once you break and disturb them it takes a long time to recover. however i planted mine with out disturbing the shape of the soil except the bottom that fell of naturally as there were no roots to hold it together in shape. one thing i noticed is the leaves never get big like it had on purchase so surely there is something in the soil thats missing and this might come back to the roots. For now it's winter so i leave it alone if it's still alive i'm going to focus on root health products with some good nitrogen and phos from an organic only fert. SE QLD here so they get great sun and warmth but it is a tad cold here in winter. But i have seen these things shoot up like crazy from a stick to 2 inch thick trees in other places in 2-3 years. wishing you luck in getting it growing. BTW I tried chempedak 3 times and each failed in winter they don't even grow in the pot and in green house in winter the second it hits 4 degrees it has anaphylactic shock and dies
