The idea of shattering a piece of work and moulding it back together being sometimes better than trying to push and pull it into place is a great point, one I think is really applicable to general life.

So interesting. I don't have any interest in directing, but I love understanding it more-it's such an art form. Also, the lamp in that back looks like an avocado. Oddly distracting.

I really appreciated this. It was good to see the different levels of experience of film directing here and I felt like I was not only watching this to learn what Gareth had to say but because of your genuine interest in film making I felt like I was learning with you. I would love to see more film related content and maybe what you have learned as a film director in your past 5 years of experience?

Wow this is so cool seeing the two of you in the same place! I love Gareth Edwards' films especially Monsters (seriously recommend it to y'all). It's interesting how the 'curse of being a filmmaker' sounds so similar to the painting and writing process (I come from an arty family), it really goes to show how similar they all are in terms of how the creative mind works.

So so so so interesting. Thanks Jack! I love hearing about the way directors work especially as a film student I just desperately want to know all of the director's thoughts. Usually people interview directors about "was is fun making this movie?" and basic things like that but you really made him tell you how he works with actors and how he gets the best performance out of them etc. Brilliant! :)

Hey Jack! Awesome vid. I love that as a filmmaker you're able to meet these amazing talented people and pick their brains. Just as a note, I saw that you also did a video about women in film and spoke with Jodie Foster. I was surprised to see the difference in how you made these two videos. The one with Jodie you intercut with your own opinions and facts. The one with Gareth here you let be a nearly unedited conversation. Though well intentioned, you might want to consider how the video you released with Jodie was a narrative controlled by you, a male, even though you were talking about women in film. I understand there were definitely points you wanted to make that you couldn't touch upon in the short press junket, but perhaps it would have been stronger to have two separate videos? One focusing on her, and one with you internalizing her message and reflecting on your own experiences? I really appreciate you joining the feminist movement and would challenge you to think more critically about the decisions you make and how they affect the narrative you're trying to bring about. Keep being awesome :)
@JackHoward
@JackHoward 7 жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean but my intention was always to make a video about Women in Film when I made that video with Jodie Foster. I did the same thing when I spoke about James Bond and interviewed Sam Mendes. I cut them into a video to demonstrate points etc. I have left this one un-edited because it wasn't part of a bigger conversation I wanted to have.
@JulietteTLin
@JulietteTLin 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response! I haven't been caught up with all your videos lately, so I definitely didn't have the full scope of it. What great opportunities and conversations to be having :) Didn't mean to rain on your parade! I know meeting Gareth Edwards is a suuuuper hype and you asked really great questions that provided good insight into directing a massive blockbuster like Star Wars. Cheers!
@JulietteTLin
@JulietteTLin 7 жыл бұрын
I would also consider how you COULD make this video part of the bigger conversation you're trying to have. After all, this film was commended for it's greater diversity on and off the camera. Talking only with women in film about women in film is only part of the equation. Men who have a large voice in Hollywood and in the decision making process NEED to be having this conversation, because so many of them are unaware. Otherwise, it leaves the women in the room the ones who have to talk about women issues all the time, while men get to talk about their talent.
@AmyGleed
@AmyGleed 7 жыл бұрын
Juliette Lin his 'ladylass Hazel Hayes' already had that conversation on the same day so although it's a good idea generally, it couldn't have happened in this instance :)

this was so interesting because everything mentioned was either something my tutor said during our directing unit this year, or something i experienced myself when i directed my first proper short (!!!). it's in editing right now and all i can see are all the things i should have done differently, but it's easy to do that after the fact, what we have to do is use that so you come closer to what you wanted next time. this was super interesting, thank you jack. more filmmaker-y videos please 😍
