Exclusive Interview with Jackie Chan (Cheng Long) for the 35th Anniversary of Drunken Master and Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (both Dir. by Yuen Woo-Ping in 1978).
No need to introduce Jackie Chan I think lol ! Let's mentions his most notable films : Police Story, Rush Hour, The Forbidden Kingdom, The Karate Kid, 1911, Kung Fu Panda, Railroad Tigers, and more recently Vanguard.
Yuen Woo-ping is famous in the west for his fight choreography (Matrix, Kill Bill, The Grandmaster), but has also been Martial Arts films director, such as Drunken Master, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, Iron Monkey or True Legend.
The Next video is a conversation with Yuen Woo-ping.
The video was supposed to be much less contrasted and at least in 720p but KZbin decided otherwise, so if anyone has a clue about this issue, he's more than welcome (already re-uped the video 4 times...).

But jackie is a Mandarin-born Son, although he was born in Hong Kong. As for me, i do feel that his Mandarin sounds natural. You can't compare him to chow- yun fat, Steven chow. When these Two ( Steven and Chow) , you do perceive their cantonese influence.

It's actually something that startled me...it could mean he's more comfortable speaking in Mandarin than Cantonese. HKers must be raging lol, or maybe they don't even care at this point. But it's totally reasonable...his parents were mainlanders, his shifu also spoke Mandarin. He's long been married to a Taiwanese wife and spends all his time in China now.

As far as switching languages...he speaks 8 of them and in a few of the bts on different movies, he'll switch back and forth depending on who he's talking to at the time...as a child he spoke fluent French..Then Cantonese, Mandarin, ...passable Korean, Japanese, Spanish, English, German ...& roughly a few other Asian dialects like Hindi

Easy! The CCP found out about this and probably stormed in halfway through the interview, forced him to speak Mandarin for the rest of the thing at gunpoint! The little editing where he speaks Canto after the Mandarin parts was just a cover-up I bet!

I prefer Snake in the Eagles Shadow, because it has a heart...... because Jackie's character is more relatable there, unlike in Drunker Master where he starts as a spoiled brat. But of course Drunken Master's end fight is the superior one.

I am one of his biggest fans from Pakistan. My siblings I, and my cousins when we were kids we used to watch his movies especially "Snake in the eagle shadow" at least twice daily and this is what we did for years. I feel very sad that even though China and Pakistan are very close friends but our film and arts industry due to politics, has never flourished otherwise many big stars like Jackie would have visited my country. Thank you so much for sharing this interview. You asked many great questions.

@almo8989
@almo8989 2 ай бұрын
It actually comes natural to him. His mother tongue is Cantonese, but he grew up speaking mandarin because of his Peking Opera master who only spoke Mandarin. His senior classmate Sammo Hung said they always switched from Canto and Mandarin when in conversation and they don't even notice it.

Its interesting. It seems he didn't have that good of a time making Snake and Drunken. Certainly if he only remembers the injury. I can see why Jackie was disappointed with the film. But honestly I really am glade Drunken Master exists. Wong in the movie is an asshole. Cocky, a bully, irresponsible. It was a whole other side of Jackie I had never seen before and the way Jackie describes how he didn't like himself in his youth it seems like he disappeared into that role. This was an insightful interview. Jackie remains one of my favorite people.

Where was it filmed? It was great to hear him not speaking English. I always feel sorry for him being forced to speak English. Why cannot they just let him speak Cantonese or even Mandarin feels more natural to him and I do not think anyone minds reading the subtitles. Or they could use an interpreter. The conversation has a different feel and a different flow. I enjoyed it but I do not speak neither Cantonese nor Mandarin and I was wondering which one he spoke. Does anyone know? Thank you.

@@jenniferandthings I agree. Our mother tongue always feels much better when we speak it. Why force him to speak English, when there are plenty of interpreters and there is such a thing as subtitles, is beyond me. Although by now he speaks a very good English he still does not feel natural speaking it, and the flow of the conversation is stilted. Mind you, it is great that his humour shines through and he can make us laugh even in English. Great man!

I think Drunken Master was great, but the amount of violence and especially the alcohol wouldn't fit with Jackie's motto today, and if it's a different tone other than raw, then coming up with the actual story is difficult. Basically mature fans won't get what they want. I think this is why Police Stories got sequels and not Drunken Master, it's harder in every way.

Thanks for sharing. But this wasn't that great an interview. I've read somewhere too that he supposedly almost lost an eye in DM, and Hwang Jang-Lee became very upset because of this and refused to do any more takes for that specifik kick. The answer here seems very vague. Much of the rest of the reminds me of the same stuff that JC always brings up himself interviews, instead of some interesting insight into these two movies.
