Dionne Warwick covered loads of Burt Bacharach songs. She had a huge hit of this. Jackie was first though.

I loved the fact that this was music that ushered your mother into this world! It shows in her son.

You may have heard the Dionne Warwick version, also beautiful.

Must listen to that one. I also did a Quick search and it was in a scene in Forrest Gump so must have heard it there as well. And it was also used in the new Joker trailer.

Jackie DeShannon is a great singer songwriter. She had some great hits in the 60's such as "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "Needles & Pins", "She Don't Understand Him Like I Do", "Splendor In The Grass" (backing band The Byrds) etc. She also wrote the hit songs "When You Walk In The Room" for The Searchers & "Bette Davis Eyes" for Kim Carnes.

Sparse horn arrangements are a signature of many Burt Bacharach tunes. Hal David wrote the lyrics.

Many artists have covered this song. Dionne Warwick did a fantastic job covering this, but I am partial to Jackie's version. I was 11 when this came out, and I can remember singing it whenever it came on the radio 😊. As many others have stated, the message is just as strong now as it was back then. The music was true Burt Bacharach style with those instruments. I believe one of them was a trombone. Thank you for sharing your intuitive input on this song, Saeed. Much love to you and your family ❤️ 🫂. By the way, your subscribers are really growing !!😊

I love her so much. One of my earliest memories is when i was 4 and my mom had a little box record player. That would've been '63. Mom would have a mountain of ironing in a basket and played Jackie while I handed her shirts. That was her first album. It had 500 Miles, Sweet Betsie from pike, Don't think twice. She had such an incredible voice. I still have that albumn 62 years later. Only one little skip in Puff the magic dragon... Lol I still love every minute of it. THIS SONG CAME OUT YEARS LATER. THANKS SO MUCH. CHECK OUT ANY OF THE SONGS FROM THE FISTS ONE. that albumn was a demo and might not be easy to find. My father was a big DJ in Indianapolis in the 60s so he had access to lots. He met Beatles and many others.

Another song written by a great duo, with lyrics by Hal David and music composed by Burt Bacharach. They had a large number of pop hits. Those horns seems to be a common element in many Bacharach tune. To my ears, maybe French horns.

When this song came out, I was 11 years old and a scared little girl. My mother, sister and I had moved to a new city, and it was hard for this shy girl to make friends. This song came out around that time, and it was a comfort, so anytime I hear this song, I think of that time and smile.
@thomastimlin1724Ай бұрын
Dionne Warwick had a version of this in the 1960's as well. Probably Burt Bacharach and Hal David's greatest most important song. This was in the middle of the troubles of the 1960's...Civil Rights movement, The Vietnam War...etc. Jerry Lewis Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy used it for decades as it's theme song. In 1971, Tom Clay used the song prominently "What the World Needs Now" theme was a medley titled "What the World Needs Now Is Love/Abraham, Martin and John" which incorporated the melody from "What the World Needs Now" alongside elements of other songs related to peace and unity; this version was often performed by various artists, including Tom Clay. There was a narrative questions asked of a little kid. One of them makes you cry. "What is prejudice?" Kid: "Um...I think it's when somebody's sick."

The "Horn" you are hearing is called Baritone, which is shaped like a small upright tuba, had a trombone range but is really mellow in tone.

This is what I grew up listening to. This is what us "liberals" grew up with. It stuck with us. And we're NOT going back! we need to re-release a few of these. There are a whole SLEw of them.
@JohnJackson-si5bzАй бұрын
Unfortunately, we seem to have many of the same social norms and rules we had then, (which I remember). Like someone isn't attracted to the other because they are too short, or overweight, or the wrong race, or too old, or from another culture, etc. It also has to do with some being too stuck inside their own bubbles, unwilling to open up to others. And even be perceived as snobbish. We're all that way at times, though.
@SaeedReacts.Ай бұрын
Indeed!

It makes it more relevant when you think about what we were going through in 1965. President Kennedy shot two years earlier. Was it a conspiracy? If it was, who was involved? Questions about whether the government could be trusted. Still involved in a war that seemed to have no end. We had fought WWII, Korea and Vietnam on and off since 1942. It just seemed like all we did was fight. College campuses were violent with anti-war protests. Soldiers were coming home to be disrespected for being drafted and sent to that war. Civil rights legislation had not eased the racial tension any. So much uncertainty. So much challenge to beliefs we had been taught were true. We were all looking for answers. So much good music came out of that search, but it was out of trying to find hope for a better world.

Hi Saeed! I believe a DJ did a cover and he asked a child different questions! It’s BEAUTIFUL! I think his name is Tom Clay, not too sure! One of the questions he asks the child is what’s racism and he/she replies I think it’s when someone is sick! It’s worth listening to, even if you don’t react to it! Some might say it’s a bit controversial???
