JACKIE LEE sings RUPERT THE BEAR Introduced by BOB MONKHOUSE with Jackie's recollection.

About two years after having a big hit with White Horses which was written for a childrens TV series I was asked to do a demo for a new childrens TV series called Rupert The Bear written by my ex and now late husband Len Beadle (aka Frank Weston) and a wonderful lyricist and friend Ron Roker about the escapades of Rupert The Bear adapted from the Daily Express funnies.
I said would be delighted. We then went into the studio and made the demo which was then submitted to the company who devised the show. It was quickly accepted. That is how Rupert the Bear began for me. Soon after the TV series started there were so many inquiries as to where the recording of the song could be bought. So back into the studio we went and made the record "Rupert" and within a very short time it shot into the charts.
The rest is history. I am so proud to have been associated with this long standing song and TV series. I hear from so many people the happy memories that it brings to mind everytime they hear it. Rupert Bear is still on TV to this day, however, for some reason or other the original song has been dropped which I think is such a pity as it was written especially for the first ever Rupert the Bear TV series that went on for years and it is closely associated with it. I hope the love and happy memories for my recordings of Rupert and White Horses will carry on for a very long time to come.

This is so bitter-sweet. Why? Because back in the day and initially today it just floods my mind with such happy memories. Its such a great happy singable tune from an idyllic childhood and I cant resist singing it even now ... a 57 year old tattoed lorry driver. I cant say if I liked the show or the song best ... theyre so perfect. Then inevitably you compare this time with whats come along socially since and I feel so sad for kids since and presently. Our childhoods were awesome .... we got dirty, got hurt occasionally but everyday was an aventure. Today kids are given far too much to think about that they cant possibly fathom. Im so glad I come from a time when dads went to work, mums cared for the house and kids instead of the absolute mess of the family unit we have today. Long live Rupert.

Being a 4 yr old boy, I watched rupert in HK in1970. The show and music impressed me deeply and I surprised to watch it again on youtube after 50 yr and was shocked by the performance of the singer Jackie Lee such a pretty lady !!! On the other hand, I think only chinese people especially cantonese would have name of "Lee 李" likes "Bruce Lee李小龍" before but not expect a British.

My friend Ruth Boswell was Script Editor on The Adventures of Rupert Bear. Ruth is an amazing person - as are you Jackie! You have simply no idea how much of an impact things like this have on people like me. The sense of nostalgia is overwhelmingly poignant. Ruth Boswell, I wasn't aware she was the script editor of The Rupert series. I think I only saw one of the series in all the years it was on TV. Used to love this theme as a kid. I can remember running home from junior school at lunch to watch the show. I never realised Jackie was in her mid 30's when she sang this, she always sounded so young maybe about 20. Also I am glad to discover that I was not the only one freaked out by Raggety.

Listening to this in 2021!! OMG, I was about 1 year old when Rupert started on TV and this single came out. OK, I don't remember it from when I was 1 year old, but remember the TV show from when I was in junior school, with the string puppets etc, the song brings back a whole stream of great memories. The song was almost on repeat on my mums very old record player, all I can remember of it, was that it could have been a BUSH record player with a BSR deck, I'd love to own a decent working record player like that now, they are very silly money! End of the rainbow search on google got me here, and I am glad it did! Found the B Side as well on another post, Going to the Circus was my favourite of these two wonderful songs! I used to have this song on 45 vinal,then about 10 yrs ago I bought a CD called "School Disco",a compilation of songs from my school era of the 70`s and 80`s,and there you were,I was reunited with your song again!!!BUT you cannot beat the vinals,you miss the crackles and pops and the fluff on the needle,I even remember when listening where mine jumped!!!LOL.Those were the days.,I didnt dress up as Rupert Bear!! not like Black Beauty!! Hi Jackie.....Just discovered you on KZbin by accident......Im 56 now and remember White Horses and Rupert themes from my childhood. I didnt want to stay at school for dinners as kids TV started at 12.10....I used to run like mad to get home so I could watch Rupert on TV while eating my dinner. White horses....the only time me and my sister were ever quiet in the same room.
