One thing I learned from doing these studies is something that might be helpful on why the Witch study was a struggle: it’s very common for us to have this idea of what skin (especially light skin) is supposed to be colored like, and we get caught in that idea rather than observing the values and colors of the actual image, especially when the lighting is different than what we usually see. We tend to make it much lighter than it is. Turning everything black and white and comparing just the values helped me internalize just how much darker light skin is supposed to be sometimes, especially if someone’s face is leaning a lot to red or oranges given how saturation gives us the impression that things are lighter.

I hate studies, as a person with adhd any type of work that is "not real" feels like an absolute chore and for aspiring artists, just saying: I did became a working professional despite doing maybe 10 studies in my entire life BUT this ones looks like genuinely fun exercise and extremely motivating after seeing you progressing right in front of my eyes!!

Same. I dread doing studies knowing that I probably won't be happy about the result even if it somehow turns out indistinguishable from the original. It's just not MINE, y'know?

I like how you mentioned tracing the film screenshot so as to just focus on the color, values and textures instead of getting the figure right. I think tracing gets a bad rap, but so long as it’s for learning I think it’s fine

I need to try do these kinds of limited studies. Up till now, i have always tried to copy the reference completely. No tracing, no color picking, no changing the pose or camera angle.. I dont like how i render things, so tracing a screenshot/photo, and then concentrating on just coloring it, could be a good practice. Thought maybe i should do a few grayscale studies first. Anyways, thanks, this was inspiring :D

Please do more Matrix practice. I love it, and also the green/blue tints really focus your work and I can really see how you worked on it, took your time and it came out so amazing. I feel strongly that something on one of the ships should be really noisy in the background and be good practice. Especially in the latest movie.

Innocent question here. Do you feel that tracing these characters and environments stops your eye and hand from learning the perspective and proportion of things? I know they're studies focussed on painting but I'm curious. Regardless, your painting process is very impressive and it really helps to see the thought you put behind each piece. Your matrix piece is the most outstanding in the bunch, a great combination of stylization and accuracy. Can't wait to see more. ❤

I think it depends, personally tracing and blocking in shapes over photos/references has really helped me! I still do it sometimes because I just started drawing humans earlier this year, so I’m not the best at poses yet. But I’ve done that for years and it’s helped me immensely. I however, draw the line at tracing other peoples artwork (if you intend to post). I’ve seen many professional artists do this, this video is an example, so I encourage all artists to practice this way! Hope this helped!
@Pebphiz9 ай бұрын
If you're studying perspective, proportions, etc., then yes you should avoid tracing! But in that case you could also let yourself color-pick. Since she was focused on lighting and color, it's OK for her to trace, but she has to select/mix the colors herself. Lots of different skills to learn for art, and from what I've heard focusing on one or two at a time is the best way to learn. I often find myself unnecessarily detailing faces or anatomy when I'm supposed to be figure drawing, for example. Only in finished illustrations/paintings do you need to stress about all of them at once.
