Potentially problematic content aside, I really appreciate the choice to have the woman in Navesgane be completely topless but not sexualized in that aspect at all, it’s a very bold choice and one I can absolutely respect. I’d like to see it on a different character for sure.

13:45 Oooh. I've got a critique for the pose on the bottom right. She's drawing a bow, but the bow isn't bending, the string is stretching, which is not how bows work.
@LeHonks
@LeHonks 8 ай бұрын
pretty sure this is wrong, the wood aint supposed to bend. The reason people do that in most art is because it just looks cool. I dunno tho.
@Zestrayswede
@Zestrayswede 8 ай бұрын
@@LeHonks Buddy... the string on a bow isn't elastic. What propels the arrow forward is the wooden part snapping back into place, like a leaf spring (hence why the string is still under tension even when the bow isn't drawn back). You will clearly see this if you watch someone use a wooden bow, provided they have the whole bow in-frame. The reason people draw the string stretching instead of the bow bending in a lot of art is because: A: it's easier to draw a longer string than to draw a bow bending B: Lack of reference material C: Lack of knowledge Even modern compound bows flex a little bit, though not as noticeably as traditional bows, thanks to being made of stiffer material.
@Fantallana
@Fantallana 8 ай бұрын
@@Zestrayswede for clarification, it’s true that the bow should bend, but the string absolutely does pull back too, which might seem to be “stretching” to the naked eye. (Plus it’s stylized, so exaggeration is ok.) I looked up pictures and videos of archery, and I can’t find a single example where the string is somehow staying exactly the same when the archer pulls back.
@Zestrayswede
@Zestrayswede 8 ай бұрын

@ThrasherMan 9 ай бұрын
It's interesting that you need to be a good artist to get accepted into some art schools. Can someone inform me as to why this is the case? Is it because there are limited spots to get in and a lot of demand, so they choose the people that show the most effort/dedication to the craft?
@sleepingalatus
@sleepingalatus 9 ай бұрын
@@ThrasherMan As far as I know, art schools wanting a portfolio is essentially the same as a college checking your GPA and SAT scores. They want to make sure you're worth accepting. From there, it likely just depends on the school's acceptance rate, with more reputable and famous schools having a lower acceptance rate since they have higher standards.
@alyssascreations

From my experience art schools aren’t really there to teach you how to draw. They teach you how to take a hobby into a professional skill. They have some fundamental classes they help you hone in on drawing, but it’s better received if you have something to build on.

@@DreamiMusho As far as I know (because I've never researched), that's not what art college and stuff is for, though. Art colleges tend to be for people who want to move forward in art towards a professional career, so they're suited towards it. There might be some equivalent of a basics course or something like there is for medical careers, but art colleges are specialized.

A lot of people don’t seem to understand that she’s critiquing her own art. This was art she made as a portfolio that got her one of her first jobs as an artist. I think a key point in being a constructive artist is going back at old stuff you made and critiquing it not based on “oh I don’t like it” but based on something with a more solid basis to it, one of those being anatomy, because anatomy isn’t based on opinion and gives you solid grounds for improvement.

What I’ve learned as an artist is that the only artist I should compare my own art to is my own. I’ve learned to turn my jealousy towards other artists into pride for how amazing they are doing. Instead of looking at their art and boiling inside, I look at their art and try to pick out what I like about it and maybe what I don’t. If there is something I like and can apply to my own style I will make a note of it and try as soon as possible to practice it. I know this is a video of you putting down your own art, but the entire time I was finding parts of the art that I really liked and making note of things I could fix myself from your own learned experiences. Proud of you! Remember that your younger self would be proud of you too!

i noticed through this video that my art has been effected by my ocd a little too much lmao i do understand your frustrations when you think the characters looks flat, or the dynamics arent pushing out enough- but thats part of the learning process! and starting there is ohhh so much easier than starting with constantly thinking about something being consistent, "shapey" enough, showing personality, or making sense in anatomy terms. you grew from not thinking about these things, at least not all the time, and its what made your art so much better. but i cant improve from where i am because im scared to get out of my comfort zone of things not always being the same as my other drawings. really sucks but i think itll be better this year this comment is probably worded wrong so my bad if no one understands LOL

Man I’m looking at this portfolio and I’m gutted I’m about a month away from getting my bfa and *this* was the work I wanted to learn how to do, but never was given the chance. My college didn’t really have the kind of classes to help me get a good baseline for my work Then they were bought out and although I now am getting a cooler title on my diploma, it means literally nothing. All the improvement I’ve gained over my time in college has been me teaching *myself* how to improve my art, *especially* digitally. I’m nervous that the work I have for a portfolio won’t be comprehensive enough for employers to consider me seriously. I *want* to do character design. But all I got from my schooling was (admittedly cool and fun) skills in completely different mediums, some good basis for composition, and super rudimentary animation skills. Hopefully I can get some good small jobs to help build up my portfolio more- otherwise I don’t know what I’m going to do.

There's nothing wrong with admitting your earlier work wasn't great, it just means that you've improved as an artist. Keeping your earlier works is a good thing because it could serve as a reminder of that, or as an inspiration for future projects. For example: when you listed the flaws of the model sheets of Quinn and V, you could update their designs to your current art style for a possible sequel to "Bang Bang!"

I remember something i had seen in the past (cant remember where) of a diagram that represent your taste in art (the way you want your art to look like) and your current skill. The shape that you ended up with is a diagonal dna looking lines and it really hits me in the feels when i think about it. At first you feel like your art is never good, and then you start to see improvements and at some point it reached a peak at that time and you start to feel like you haven't made any progress and after a while you start feeling like your art is not good again but in truth your art taste are just setting the bar higher for yourself Hearing the first few sentence of this video reminds me of that rut when i was just starting to learn art a little more seriously and how its important to never stop even if it feels like you feet are knee deep in wet sand. Remember everyone it’s a good thing when you feel a little cringey about things you did or said in the past. It means you’re growing as a person and learning from it.

Hi Jackie I started taking your course about a week ago and the course came out more than a month ago. I've seen that more recent posts on the tasks rarely have any feedback on it not from you nor other people that are taking the course. I absolutely understand this i mean you are not gonna be as active after a bit of time but many have started the course recently and I would be so greatful if you would be able to take some time and give some more feedback. Love your work!❤

Hey Jackie, This was great! Incredibly helpful. I was wondering if you could talk more about the exploration sheets as you said you had lots of thoughts and I'd love to hear them. I think they're the sheets I struggle to balance the most because there's so many elements working together on them so I'm just curious about your thoughts

Unrelated but when I have no motivation to draw, I fuel myself with the possibilities to learn. I watch speedpaints, good art, and say, I could try that, I could learn that
