I’ve previously done this with taped-off squares but never just tracing squares. I saw artist Kellee Wynne (www.kelleewynnestudios.com) tracing the squares and loved how it turned out so I've been using this method ever since.
Did you know that when it comes to discovering your own artistic style, the QUANTITY of your artwork matters more than the QUALITY? We develop our styles by making lots and lots of artwork! This warm up is a fast, fun way to make 18 tiny paintings in one sitting. This allows you to try out many different compositions and combinations at the same time. Plus, they're pretty cute too.
You can use any colors and materials you choose for this exercise, the important part is to experiment with putting different patterns, colors, and textures together. This exercise can be used on its own as a collage warm up, a way to try out new combinations of colors/patterns, as an art journal page, and BONUS can be easily packed up for art on the go.
Materials used: sketchbook, acrylic paint, Pitt Pens, Neocolor I Crayons, and a color shaper.

Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos. Turquoise is my favorite color and I think you did a beautiful job using it in a pallet I would not have considered. I also ordered a huge jar of Titan Green Light- a color that I have been looking for as a neutral for the colors I love to use. Being a Mom with 3 kids to keep up with and producing this wonderful content, you are my hero.

YES I’ve been aching for some grid journal watching. Thank you!! How do you set up your grids- is it a stencil of some kind? It never looks symmetrical for me.

Yay! I must have known you were waiting for it ☺️ I cut a business card down to a 2”x2” square and just eyeball the placement. I’ve spent many years eyeballing things when I don’t want to get up to find a ruler that I’ve gotten better at it over the years 😆

Ahhh wait sorry I just realized I missed the first 1.5 minutes of the video. Also I had to laugh at the broken yardstick and repurposed scratch Art tool- I totally would have continued to use them for art. 😂

I missed what type of acrylic paint the celadon was. Is it heavy body, open, fluid...? It seemed to work really well with the scraper.

Hi Jackie! What brand name is the brush you used to paint the red in the collage? I've seen other artists work with it and I want one. Thanks ❤😊

Hi! It’s called a color shaper - it’s like a brush but the brush part is made of silicone. They’re fun to use. This one is about 1” wide ☺️

It’s a bit less wild and free that it would be if I had things taped , I’ll give you that 😆 I got so tired of pages ripping from tape issues that it’s easier to just draw the squares on (and if you look closely, you’ll notice that I don’t necessarily stay inside the lines as it is 🤣)
