Collage Basics: How to Create Collage Paper with Tissue

I decided to go back to basics to show you how I do it so that you can use your own collage papers to infuse your art with more of YOU! This is an introduction to making simple, quick, and highly effective collage paper using crayons, high flow acrylic paint, and tissue paper. I often use similar bold, graphic collage papers in mixed media artwork and get many questions on how I create it.

I love this video. I had a tissue paper exploration a few months ago and enjoyed the experience but could not find a place to put the papers to dry, so I got out an old clothes rack and put it beside my worktable. The only problem was the papers stuck to the rods. So now trying to figure out a way to dry and keep working in a fast manner. Years ago I made prints of objects on a laser printer with tissue paper and then sprayed them with gloss medium and incorporated them into my art. More please, love to see how you discover new ways to create. The basics are the foundations of a future creation. So important.

Thanks for the reminder - I meant to add that I lay out a large canvas tarp on the floor when I do these and put all the wet paint tissue on the tarp until it dries. It rarely takes more than 10 minutes even for the wettest paper ❤️

Another great transparent paper which adds more dimension is pattern paper for making clothes.

Hi Jackie - this looks like great fun. I have “white” tissue paper paper from Amazon and when I reach them I will do this. They are now in Amsterdam and I am in ehe Mid East but all this changes TUESDAY… when I leave the mid east for good after 50 Years….

I love using rice paper for this purpose. It goes on clear when I brush pouring medium on it

Also I’ll make clear paint skins with pouring medium, and paint patterns on it when it’s dry.

Hi Jackie ... one way you could use your son's "stencil" would be to use black spray paint. You could mask off the sections you don't want to show up while you spray

Great idea, Katherine! I tend to stay away from spray paint unless I can spray it outside and leave my art out for a while to get the smell out lol I might try this in the spring/summer. I'm also considering attaching it to a panel as 3-D texture for the background. ❤️

Dina Wakely gloss sprays - they’re acrylic, non- aerosol, and don’t stink. They’re safe to use inside, I’d even be okay with older children using it as it’s basically just acrylic paint in a really liquid medium.

Hiya, what came to mind immediately for the cut out shape remnants was to brayer paint on and use as a stamp. Or to use on a gel plate. When collaging do you find it easier to know what to do or to reach for the full unused tissue collage pages or the pieces you've already ripped up? If I start feeling precious about a page I'll just rip it in half to make it easier to start using it. It took a bit of telling my head it was OK because I kept thinking 'but I might rip through the piece that would go perfectly on another art piece '. I then remind myself I can always make more.

Love the stamp idea! I’ve been thinking about the gel plate too - I think it would work well to lift off some paint in that design to create negative space …. So basically as a stamp again, but the reverse? 😆 I love the idea of you tearing a page in half to make it less precious! I find myself drawn so often to my mishmash box of smaller fragments, so I’ve been following that for a while now. Every now and then - especially when I start a series, I’ll grab a few full sheets of collage paper or painted tissue and tear up the large sheets. Overcoming the feeling of scarcity is something I seem to have to do over and over again, but you’re so right - we can always make more ❤️❤️❤️

With regard to your first process Could you use regular wax crayons?

I haven’t used regular Crayola crayons but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Just make sure they aren’t “washable” crayons or they’ll wash off with glue! 😆

I tried this with butcher paper but the images keep smudging no matter how long they’ve dried. I used ink, and acrylic paint. The paint is slightly better but is not intense black. Any suggestions?

Oh shoot! Hmm. A few questions for you… Was the ink acrylic ink? If not, try acrylic ink. India ink smudges on me 👎 Was the butcher paper just a large roll of paper or was it ACTUALLY the paper with one shiny side that butchers wrap meat in? I use the big roll kind, which is not shiny at all. Acrylic paints have always worked for me once they’re dried. I hope that helps a bit.

How do you keep your collage papers from getting wrinkles? It seems no matter what I do, anything but tissue paper wrinkles.

Sometimes my papers wrinkle a bit too, but I don't mind it - it adds character lol You might try a thicker gel medium if your collage paper is thick like card stock. ❤️

Can you use crayola crayons?

You sure can! Just make sure they’re not the washable kind or the color will all smear/disappear when you glue it down
