TV was 100 times better back then. Lost in Space, Batman, Twilight Zone, I Dream of Jeanie, Star Trek, Bewitched, Gilligan's Island, Bonanza, Andy Griffith, Beverly HIllbillies, Get Smart, the Man From UNCLE, etc...

This year I'm turning 64 but "lost in space" is still keep fresh in my mind, and now with this special, in my very heart. I love this video that apparently was uploaded 2 years ago. We're February 2024 and Mark Godard passed on October 13 2023 at age 78, thankfully beautiful June Lockhart is still with a shining smile among us, as well as Angela Cartwright , Billy Mummy and Martha Kristen. Our beloved Jonathan Harris departed in 2002 and hopefully is watching this magnificent TV show along with Guy Williams, wherever they are. The robot? well, it is around there. Thank you for making us to enjoy once again "lost is space".

I am 9 months behind you watching this and I know what you mean. I was knee high to a grasshopper when I 1st watched LIS and now when I am watching this it takes me back. I am knee high to a grasshopper again watching as if the very 1st time eyes full of wonder at Will lasering that one eyed giant in And there where Giants in the Earth and John flying around with that backpack looking for Penny before they freeze to death and the wild sea and Penny and Will getting trapped in that cave of the dead and The Derelict before that and the rest. And the fantastic music of John Williams adding to the wonder and drama.

I was six years old when this came on. I fell in love with Marta at first sight. I thought she was the prettiest lady in the world. Now that I think about it, I was right! She was ridiculously beautiful. Of course, I loved the show for the sci fi and adventure, too. Especially the genius kid, and the robot. My favorite episodes were when the characters got to see Earth, even old earth at the wrong time, even a bad facsimile. Pure fun.

I was almost one year old, to the day, when this show first premiered and, if I do say so myself, it was a time of great vintages! The mid-60s and early 70s were unquestionably the best years ever to be a kid! Mini skirts were in style, not surprisingly divorces were becoming the norm, moms of all marital status' were deciding eight-year-olds could be left alone and were getting jobs, When mom was home the kids were in front of the tv watching scooby-doo or sent outside and encouraged to roam freely and discover the world, cars had no seatbelts and were much safer than today because everyone smoked cigarettes and drank tons of booze every time we went anywhere, thirst was quenched with hose water, sugar and a little kool-aide powder, and a school day often included a spanking from a teacher or ducking and covering under our tiny desks from the atomic bomb. Ah, yes, what fond memories those are! Truthfully, fond memories.

testify brother, i was about 4yrs old when i was sat in front of the black n white TV as mum went through all 3 channels and stopped on lost in space. nobody liked smith so he was the one i backed, i named my stuffed tiger zachary. in truth he woulda been blown out the airlock by the 2nd episode. even at that age i was free to roam, granted i was nearly killed a few times, thrown into the barbed wire by a stroppy cow or getting trapped in a landslide of sand and being crushed by the bulldozer digging it. yup, best times, hot pants an hippies and catching a bus alone at 6yr old.

As a sci-fi purist, I elevated Star Trek and looked down on Lost in Space as kiddy drivel. But later on in life, I came to understand just how hard it is to get a show on the air at all, let alone keep it there... All these shows are nothing more than a transportation vehicle for Wheaties, Quaker Oaks, CoolAde, Calgon, etc. That's why they made it, because they were effective at distracting people long enough to see a few commercials. In the end, we were very lucky to have had shows like Lost in Space and Batman. Very lucky. And now I can watch it in all its campiness and love it.

Interesting to see Jonathan Harris in this documentary as it also promoted the LIS movie. That movie had cameos from some of the original LIS actors, but not Jonathan Harris. I interviewed him at the time and he said that he turned down that offer because it was just a short cameo (some of the actors are even hard to spot in the film) because, as he told me, "I do not do bits!" and he sounded just like Doctor Smith when he said that.

Technically it was never cancelled by CBS, it was simply left off a list delivered to Irwin Allen Productions. (Usually a list of renewals and cancellations are listed together) Irwin Allen was fully preparing for a Season 4 and so were the cast. Irwin didn't catch the miss right away. Some think that CBS executives didn't "formally" cancel it because they knew Irwin (and fans) would fight to keep the show going. By simply leaving it off the production list, it was a kind of quiet and sneaky way of removing it from the production budgets. By the time Irwin caught on to what had happened, it was too late. CBS said they had no money for a LIS renewal and since he never challenged the production notification CBS provided, the show was essentially over.

When I was 7 years old in 1973 watching reruns of Lost in Space and Star Trek, I use to go outside at night and look up to the stars thinking The Robinsons and Star Trek crew was up there somewhere flying in space. Even one night there was a trail of a zig zag lights and a spot of light moving along the nightly skies where my parents and grandparents came outside after I went inside and started freaking out about the light. They were in the yard looking up at it when my Dad went in the house to get the binoculars and focus on the moving light then it disappeared, but a few moments later it reappeared for a couple of minutes before it was gone. I just knew we saw the Star Ship Enterprise or the spaceship of Lost in Space, my Dad kept telling me it's not the Enterprise or Lost in Space, lol. And another time during the day playing in the sand pile with my hot wheels cars, I noticed hearing something really loud and at first I didn't pay no mind but it kept getting louder and louder so I happened to look up in the sky and saw what was slowing coming, I freaked out and jumped up and ran into the house like I was the Six Million Dollar Man and shaking all over and thought I just seen some kind of monster. My Mom and Dad went outside with their binoculars and seen what it was, it was one of those big Army Helicopters with two blades, my very first time ever saw one of those beast looking flying in the sky like that, two blades helicopter that was much louder than just a Police Helicopter would make, lol. A lot of bad but good memories for me back in my childhood days.

Dr Smith totally made this series with amazing performances, characterisation and countless corny but somehow amazing lines which would become timeless cliches. The first time this series ran here in Australia it had a serious evening time slot. All the reruns were later shifted to after school viewing hours. We also got endless reruns of Rin Tin Tin, F Troop, Gilligan’s Island and The Addams Family. Batman was very interesting as it seemed serious to little kids but totally comedic to slightly older kids, total ham.

I was a kid in the 1960s, and I hated Lost In Space because it DID come on on a different network than Batman. We had one old B/W Philco tv in our house, and my older brother was the L.I.S. fanatic, and I wanted to watch Batman. So we would argue as to who was going to have the tv that night to watch our favorite show. But in later years, I learned to like L.I.S. and I think my favorite episode is season two Trip Thru The Robot.

When the TV execs changed the format of Lost in Space to an unrecognisable pop art monstrosity, a program I once regarded as a serious, if quirky, sci-fi adventure, at least in the beginning, was ruined/butchered as far as 10-year-old me was concerned, It was then I stopped watching it. Almost 60 years on I can watch other contemporary SCI-FI programs with a great degree of nostalgia, however, the same cannot be said for Lost in Space. IMHO, I still regard Lost in Space as a program that could have been had external pressure not turned it into a curiosity rather than a classic.
@UlsterGeorge
@UlsterGeorge 5 ай бұрын
I agree that Lost in Space was ruined when it was turned into a "pop art monstrosity" as you call it, I much preferred the earlier episodes and lost interest after the format changed. The difference between children's sci-fi like Doctor Who which could be genuinely scary and Lost in Space which was more farce than frightening and more silly than serious was rather stark.

Or the backyard garden, as it were.😅. After nearly sixty years, I’m still an unabashed LIS fan- although sometimes I think I’m a bigger fan of John Williams’ interior music. So dark, poignant, empathic. He employed every instrument in that orchestra- glockenspiel, vibraphone, cello, viola brass/wind….the harp. I remember & 4 years old, being so emotionally moved by one piece of music, it made me weep. Years later it was revealed it was a John Williams piece entitle “Mother and Daughter.” Most poignant piece of music I ever heard on episodic television.

Too bad they didn't put the end instead of to be continued that was the last time any of the two original characters were actually going to be on screen in 4 years before Smith died but I'm sure they thought the movies were going to be a Trilogy instead of one huge disappointment

Lost started out great , with the whole family involved, the first 8 or so episodes were straight forward exciting fun. The second half of the first season started focusing on Smith and his character became ( for me) a joke. Could not watch this show anymore because the Smith character became the star of this once exciting show.

I agree. I loved this show and kept watching but I was so disappointed the writing veered off into high campy humor instead of the original sci-fi excitement.
