This version is actually the 3rd version of A Star is Born. The first was a straight drama without music in 1937 with Janet Gaynor & Fredric March, that was followed by the first musical treatment (and in my opinion the best film of the material) in 1954 with Judy Garland & James Mason. Both of those were set in the world of film but this remake with Barbra and the more recent one are set in the world of music. Interesting fact: in all the other versions but this one both the leading actress and actor were Oscar nominated but didn't win (in Judy's case her loss was very controversial) however Barbra, who cowrote Evergreen, was Oscar nominated for Best Song and won in that category! Barbra has been performing professionally since she was 19, so over 60 years now and has had an album chart on the Top 25 in every decade since the 1960's. The only female performer to do so, Bob Dylan is the only male to match the feat. It seems incredible now with the career she's had but she got her start when she won a talent contest in a Greenwich Village gay bar named The Lion where the prize was a week's engagement for 50 bucks and free food! Word spread from there and she played the supper club circuit (a very big deal in the sixties) then a scene stealing small part in a Broadway show, followed by her landing the leading role of Fanny Brice in the musical play "Funny Girl" which was a huge hit, all the while she was putting out albums and had a couple of enormously successful television specials, when Funny Girl was transferred to the big screen she went with it and won a Best Actress Oscar (tied with Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter-the only time in the category's history). For the entirety of the 70's she was rated in the Box Office Top 10, she cut back on acting in the 80's to focus more on directing but remained active in the musical industry throughout. Obviously her catalog is vast and full of gems but probably the best way to begin is to check out her songs that went to #1 on the charts: Evergreen was one of those. The others are "The Way We Were" (the title song of one of her most popular films-she was again nominated for Best Actress and the tune won the Best Song Oscar), "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" (a duet with Neil Diamond), "No More Tears" (a duet with Donna Summer), and "Woman in Love". That only scratches the surface of her work but it will provide a start.

Thanks much Jack! This was the third remake of "A Star Is Born". (I'd argue 4th...but that's another story! 😅). The movie grossed $80M (HUGE in '76), the soundtrack and "Evergreen" spent weeks at #1. Barbra won her 2nd Academy Award for composing the music to "Evergreen". All the songs in the film were recorded live and it was the first film released in Dolby 4-Channel Surround. The dude is actor, singer, musician, songwriter, Rhodes Scholar, US Army Ranger,etc., etc., Kris Kristofferson. (Btw, Barbra was 55 when she recorded with Celine in '97. She's 81 now. As a hardcore Barbra fan I'm a little over "Evergreen." But this version is so unique. It's taken from the film as her character Ester is recording her first album with the help of John Norman Howard, a kinda has-been rock star. So she is singing this LIVE on camera, not lip-synced (Barbra is not a good lip-syncer). As you can see, she is only using a hand held single earphone to hear the playback. Normally you wear a full headset in the sound booth when recording. But we can't mess up the hair for this shot in the movie. It has to be Barbra perfect - and it is!

I was Blessed to grow up with this beautiful music and it makes me so happy that today’s younger generation has the chance to experience it and enjoy what they like. There are four versions of "A Star is Born", the original was made in the 1930s. Many consider the 1950s version starring James Mason and Judy Garland the best of the four. The story however is basically the same. The men all play a washed up actor and or singer that meet and fall in love with an aspiring unknown actress/singer. The leading man discovers the woman, gets her career started, they fall in love marry and her career takes off and goes through the roof while his career basically comes to an end due to substance abuse. She feels both devoted and obligated to him because without him, she feels..she never would have had a career. I haven't seen the newer version with Bradley Cooper and Lady Ga Ga. With all due respect, I think the 1950s version is much better. Judy Garland gives a powerful peformance that should have won her an Oscar, but she was cheated out of it by the Hollywood brass but that's another story...LOL, oh by the way..Streisand was absolutely flawless in this performance of a beautiful song written by Paul Williams. Another fact not generally known about Streisand's version of "A Star is Born". Elvis was offered the role for the male lead, but Col. Parker Elvis' greedy manager asked for too much money so the plans to use Elvis (A part that Elvis REALLY wanted to do badly) was scrapped.
