@@tristanprice2433 Wasn't that an engine that came out after they discontinued the six 0 or was that engine for the F 450 and up ? I have a 2005 F350 6.0 that has only about 142 thousand miles which is not a lot for a diesel. I've had nothing but breakdowns on the engine. I have no other experience on Ford diesel engines except the 7.3 which I dearly love.

GMC, was originally marketed as "General Motors Truck" in the early years, and was a division of "Yellow Cab & Coach Company", before becoming the GMC Bus & Coach division. Very durable & long lasting truck, I must say. Another great video!

My uncle had GMC Brigadiers w/ 6-71 Detroit's in them back in the late 80's and those were the 1st trucks that had I got to drive. He had a good size yard and all that I was able to get a feel of truck driving before I ended up years late getting my CDL.

In 1980 I drove 5 1977 cab over trucks, GMC, FORD, KW., PETE, INTERNATIONAL, the Ford and GMC both had better heaters, and. A/C than the rest. The Astro, had big windows, I put aluminium foil at the top of the window for about 1 and a half foot, then used cardboard at the bottom wrapped in aluminum foil it helped the A/C work much better

Really loved the GMC line of trucks.🥰I grew up seeing the Crackerbox and General trucks. They sure made some nice looking rigs back in the day and continued for a long time. Tis a shame they don’t do big trucks anymore. Merry Christmas from the Porters!

As a kid, I lived along US 35. This was in the per-interstate highway days, and truck traffic was very heavy on Rt 35. Hennis and Roadway ran steadily though the area, using Mack H models, but one didn't have to look to know when a McLean truck went by. The scream of those old GMC engines in those cannonballs was unmistakable. I have driven a few different trucks over the years, including Mack, IH, Ford, and even one Pete. My absolute favorite, though, was a GMC Astro. Sweetest thing even put on wheels! PS: Believe it or not, the Mack F model was my second choice. Not only nice to drive overall, the low noise level was a standout. It was unquestionably the quietest cab I was ever in. Still, it wasn't even close to a match for the comfort or visibility of the GMC Astro.

Humphreys invented the air ride. Hendrickson brought it out for class 8 trucks. Ford first installed it in semi trucks in 1974.

When I got the chance to get my Class A, a small company owner took me out in his 81 Brigadier and taught me to pull doubles, net and tie down. Once I got my license, I ran his 77 Astro with a 350BC Cummins, a 10 spd, and Armstrong steering. Put a lot of miles on that day cab from the Ca/Mexico line, to the Bay area and everything in between. Only thing I didn't like about it, was it was a "Day cab" and a real short wheelbase, (was an ex grocery store fleet tractor)so the only place to store ropes and straps were on the passenger side floor and seat.

back in the 90s I had a 1973 GMC astro 8v71 318 Detroit 13 over 433 years on 44,000lb reyco suspension. it had factory delete front brakes. factory stretched frame, a guy told me it hauled tank trailers when it was new, extra wheelbase was for a liquid pump. it had Dayton wheels and duel stacks and mufflers had no baffles. it was a scream'in Jimmy!! a larger sleeper cab. I was I my early 20s so I take it out bobtail just to run it through the gears and hear the exhaust, for a 20 something driving it was a good time. now I drive a late model small Detroit automatic wow what a difference 4 decades plus make. the only Jimmy I have is a Serria 1500 short box 4.3 manual trans .

I drove many Astro's with mostly 8V71's and 10 speeds. Later in the early 90's my company switched to Generals with 8V92's with 13 speeds. They were great trucks But then for some odd reason GMC sold out to China owned Volvo heavy trucks.....Go figure????????????????

LOLOLOLOLOL!! Dad had a pure hatred for Chevy, and GMC truck's, stemming back to the 30s. I guess they used to use pure Babbitt for rod and main bearings, and were prone to frequent failures. All I remember him saying was a rant about " Those Babbitt beating piles of junk ain't worth having!!" "Not even good for a yard ornament"! Come to think of it, he didn't have good thing's to say about Dodge either. International or Ford was the only choices ya had, if ya had work to do! I still think about him and my uncles arguing about those old outfits, Studebaker, Ford, Reo, dodge, ect. Good times back in that old shop.

regarding note #1 - the original Grabowski Motor Company was founded in Detroit by Max and Morris Grabowski in 1900. In 1905 the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was founded in Pontiac by the Grabowsky brothers (I have no idea what became of their first company - I assume that it failed). Rapid apparently made a successful product and beginning in 1908, Mr. Durant began buying stock in the company. By 1909 he had controlling interest and Rapid became a division of General Motors. The Rapid brand name was dropped in 1912, and the product was known as General Motors Truck thereafter. Interestingly, after Rapid was acquired by GM, the Grabowsky brothers started another company called Grabowsky Power Wagon in Hamtramck. It operated until at least 1911. Their manufacturing facilities were acquired by Budd and Maxwell.

It would have been good if GMC’s prime movers were mentioned. GMC inline6 engines were the best gas engines available then. GM Diesel engines were the exclusive Diesel engine of GMC for decades.

back in 1990 I bought a new sierra pick up at Coffman gmc aurora Illinois a exclusively gmc light-medium heavy dealer ship in 1988 the transportation company that I was driving at assigned me to a new white-gmc brigadier tractor it was fully equipped cab cummins motor fuller 9-speed transmission it was a day cab but was a long wheel base for western states it was ordered for the Denver terminal but some how it made its way to the Chicago terminal I sure turned a lot of heads running around the Chicago area with it I don't recall the length of the wheelbase but we could have dropped a sleeper on it the terminal manager was thinking about it but it never happened it was a horrible ride because of the Hendrickson suspention

A lot of Detroit engine's 238/671 6v71 6v92 318/8v71 and my favorite a 435/8v92. You did see a lot of gmc with cummins in them as well every now and then you you might find one with a 1693 cat or 3406A or 3406B cat but they wasn't that common i liked a astro with a Cummins with a 13 speed wirh 3.70 rears it was a good combination

Strangely, they use the just-superseded pickup cab rather than the new one. Even more strangely the 4500-5500-6500 models are Chevrolet-only. I'd love to know the logic behind that (and the polar opposite, the logic behind the Encore being a Buick rather than a GMC).

@@nlpnt yeah I saw for the cab, likely just didn't want the tooling for the old cabs to go to waste (as fun fact, the old Super Duty cabs are still used for the F-650/750) though no GMC version? extra weird. all I know is unless GM can get a home run in the EV space they're probably back on track to go bankrupt again.
