I really hope Jack sees this. Tom isn't that bad of a person. I think he's really misunderstood. In the animal crossing lore, Tom was screwed over by get rich quick scams and fell into a bad depression after he lost everything. Ever since he has been trying to get better and teach others important financial lessons to not get screwed over as he did. That's why he does not give you any interest in your dept and allows you to pay it back anytime penalty-free as slowly as you want. I think the reason why everyone hates him is that in the Gamecube animal crossing he's a bit rude and forces you into dept but if you think about it, he's just trying to make a living for himself. In the time that the game took place Nook was still very poor and probably didn't want to lose a customer. In Wild World, you can encounter hidden events that reveal lore and backstory about Nook and his relationships with the Able sisters (specifically Sable). Nook was a genuine friend with Sable. Even when he was broke he still got Sable a very pretty pair of scissors that showed he still cared and he shows genuine remorse for pushing her away. I don't think Nook is a bad person. He says himself if you trigger an event with an amiibo card that he is only trying to teach the player and his pupils about the harsh world of corporate finance. He's a good person.
