My beautiful soulmate passed 6 years ago today and as he passed I played this song. Jackson was our favorite singer and we spent our years traveling to see him in concert. This song was our favorite, but as my love passed to it, the words took on all new and deeper meaning. It's a journey, and now he's moving farther on with the angels.

I was in Kathmandu in 1976. It was nighttime and we were looking for a restaurant in the old quarter called “ Monks Pleasure Palace”. It was known for hash cake and tea ( but that’s another story). We were lost in the dank dark alleys following an open sewer. Suddenly we went around a corner and in the distance we heard this song coming from a second story window covered with a light infused bed sheet. It was the restaurant. We ascended the stairs and opened a door and entered a room of wonder. People from many countries sitting on the floor and breaking bread (or cake) and listening to great music and laughter. This song always takes me there.

Perhaps the truest song ever written about being aware of one's human journey. The dreams of youth, tempered by the reality of existence, and aided by the love and support of others, are transformed into the embracing of one's "farther on", wherever it may lead. Beautiful!

It blows my mind how David Lindley is such a great musical talent. It goes without saying that Jackson is one of the great songwriters of my generation. My sisters turned me on to some wonderful stuff as I was growing up but I found Jackson on my own, perhaps that's why I feel so strongly about his music. Well that and the fact that he sings to my heart...Peace, ya'll. Love each other.

I am a brother to you.....through Jackson. I found him when ROLLING STONE named " Late For The Sky " as one of 1975's top 10 albums...my little brother's tombstone says " Into a dancer you have grown " ( he had lost the ability to walk, last 5 years of his life ) and my older brother's suicide note read " I never knew what I loved in you / I don't know what you loved in me " . Every day , from 1975 -- until somebody's feelin' stupid, standin' round, cryin' as we (they) ease me down.

But the angels are older They can see that the sun's setting fast They look over my shoulder At the vision of paradise contained in the light of the past And they lay down behind me To sleep beside the road till the morning has come Where they know they will find me With my maps and my faith in the distance Moving farther on

I was very lucky to see Jackson Browne live twice in my life -- once at the "NoNukes" concerts in NYC in the early 80s, and once in about 2009 in Melbourne, Australia. The latter concert showed him to be a calm, humble, sweet performer with even more talent than he had as a young star. I love the poetry of his lyrics and the gentle purity of his voice. He's the male Joni Mitchell.

@4FabBEATLES After years of being unable to play in full-on electric settings for many years, due to suffering from Tinnitus, Lindley was able to re-join Jackson's band full time last year, thanks to the miracle of in-ear monitoring which allows for more control over volume and other aspects of the mix, wherein the user can use as much as little overall volume as desired.

As a songwriter I think Jackson Browne really isn't that great, most of his songs they all sound the exact same. he really doesn't delve out of his comfort zone, but this album is just one of the top 5 lyrical masterpieces and is up there with anything anyone has ever done because of that. I don't really care for anything else he's done with much enthusiasm, but this album is incredibly beautiful because of his masterful lyricism.

What does he say before the song? I've listened many times and can never understand it...
@stargazer67535 жыл бұрын
+xcrunning87. This is only 10 years late. Too bad no on replied back then. I did not write it down word for word, but it went something like this, "I want to sing this for all the people that I have not had the chance to thank, most notable Warren (Zevon) and Crystal (his wife) and their little daughter Ariel (Jackson's Godchild).This was about 4 - 6 months after his wife Phylis Major killed herself, leaving behind Jackson and their 18 month old baby boy. It must have been challenge, but Jackson already was a real father in every way, taking him on tour as a baby with the help of others. When he was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he made a point of thanking all of the people (and he named them) who helped him raise his two boys. I thought that was extraordinary. His whole family was there except for his second son, but his nephew was there and he was thanked. He recognized and thanked them all. And by the way, let us not forget that the song that we are talking about is "Farther On'.
