That fingerpicking is so beautiful. I developed ALS not that long ago (I'm 43 now) and miss playing guitar. I have muscle pain / tremors so, I can't really play anymore. I don't know how much time I have left in this world but, this song always makes me feel calm / happy. My wife is here and my kids so, that is a blessing as well and, they mean everything to me. Whoever reads this, always enjoy life in the moment. You just don't know what the future holds sometimes.

So sorry to hear that. Playing music releases so much endorphins and takes your mind off of everything else. I hope you will always at least be able to play some music. Maybe just a melody and a bass line or Maybe keyboard? It’s sad that you can’t do what you love.

Totally amazing. That really tripped me out first learning that, because I thought it was a Nico song. It took me a long time to get into him, being young-ish and into whatever weird shit. I just thought he was the "Running on Empty" guy. But he's one of my favorites, now. Not just because of the Nico song, but when I read that it was actually his song, I became an instant fan. A while back I did some mushrooms and realized something funny about his song Rosie that really pulled me out of a really bad trip, it was so funny and amazing. Jackson Brown rules.

People who dislike Nico's vocals probably don't get the whole "chanteuse" tradition and wouldn't "get" Marlene Dietrich or Hildegard Knef either...But Nico went waaay beyond the cafe confines of that genre as her later work THE MARBLE INDEX, DESERTSHORE, THE END et al. prove. However, the last thing I'm suggesting to the haters is they seek out those classic records. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't GET them either.

Gregor, beautifully said. I've only had a touching acquaintance with the chanteuse tradition, through snippets of recordings of Marlene Dietrich, but I respect and aknowledge it. There is a poignancy to Nico's vocals in this recording I cannot put my finger on, but its tone expresses a sadness and resignation that I suspect many feel today.

Striking how Nico inspires so much violent dislikes. Many people are insensitive to that voice, its straightforwardness, the way it is poised between singing and talking, its low range, its very original and human presence. (Warhol had some taste, apparently).

As I just posted in another response. Nico's voice MAKES THIS SONG. As well as the inclusion of the string instruments that Jackson Browne mocks in the spoken introduction. Her voice adds emphases, depth of feeling, and sincerity that no other version has.

There was also a picture of Woodie Guthrie with the words "This machine kills fascists" on his guitar. Pretty ironic considering there are stories from those that knew her regarding a propensity for making anti-Semitic and anti-black comments. On a somewhat related note, Woodie Guthrie was a communist and communism has taken far more lives than fascism, so he doesn't fit with Dr. King either.
