I first heard of this song in mid-2009 because a friend of mine's dad had this album & just wanted to get some sort of music playing & when I heard it, I was like "This sounds like one heck of a song that Jackson Browne did...". I listened to it & was like "The lyrics make absolutely no sense, but, that's alright by me!...". Great times...

haha I am old enough to remember it coming out, this is not Trey who did the video but Shawn haha, and I remember back then how much I liked it but how nonsensical it was ESPECIALLY for a great songwriter!

Lyrics were basically about the cold war. How the USA were saying the Russians will invade. That Regan pushed this line . And everyone took it hook line and sinker . Basically the lawyers were politicians as most of them are lawyers. And that the average person was happier watching tv than worrying what the truth was

Back in the day, I loved the video imagery for this song…especially the synchronized dance moves with lawyers in suits with briefcases . High rotation on the fairly new MTV. You’ve got me going back to check that out now!

Consistently amazing artist. I love this song. Wonderful lyrics that evokes amazing imagery. I just found out that that Jackson Browne was a songwriter / guitarist for Nico of the Velvet Underground back in the 60s...

Yes he wrote a lot of stuff for people in the late 60's, Thanks John!

Regarding the instrumentation on this song, there are three guitars - Jackson Browne himself on rhythm guitar, Rick Vito on lead guitar, and the third guitar (doubling the bassline) is played by Bob Glaub, who also plays the bassline on here, in the album's liner notes, Bob Glaub is credited with both guitar and bass), other musicians included Craig Doerge on piano and synthesizer, Doug Haywood on organ, and Russ Kunkel on drums, with Danny Kortchmar credited as the arranger. The synth part almost sounds like a theremin in certain parts of the song (the theremin is the instrument behind the 50s sci-fi film scores), JB is an amazing songwriter! I agree with your interpretation of this song being about the Cold War.

It's one of my favorite JB songs. He is very political and this is one of those songs. You got the Cold War and Happy Days (1950s and early 1960s) parts right. I think the lawyers in love are politicians in love with power. A lot of it suggests the complacent silent majority fearing the Cold War while going about their every day lives. The USSR will be open for vacationland suggests the Reagan Administration when Gorbachev was President- Glastnost and Perestroika, and a move toward democratic reforms in Russia. Certainly more westerners traveled to Russia than before. Good review. You should review Lives in the Balance, too.

Trey, An '80's song by Jackson Browne. This song is upbeat with a bright tempo right from start. Nice guitar, and the drums have an '80's beat sound. I agree on the instrumentation. I agree, a good album opener. The lyrics have imagery. You really go into detail as you explain the meaning so well and accurately. Your insight into the lyrics is way beyond my understanding. I didn't understand what the writer was saying until I heard you explain it. Yes, it does have a hit sound to the song.Very good song choice Greg.
