You can pull one pin and completely remove the rudder for storage/cleaning. A truly necessary feature in areas worried about giant salvinia.
@BassDudeFishn2 жыл бұрын
@@EtxpaddlesportsMakes sense if you trying to avoid spreading invasive species. It's more a personal preference for me being able to lower and raise the rudder. I believe the rudder on the Hobie and Old Town goes past the back keel. So you have to be able to raise the rudder up and down so you don't mess up your rudder. On the new Jackson kayak and the older maybe newer models of the Native kayaks the rudder runs flush with the keel so you don't have the problem of having to worry about messing up your rudder. It's a matter of personal preference. I personally believe you get better performance with the design of the rudder on the Hobie and Old Town kayaks. I have read several blogs where people have replaced the rudder on the older Native kayaks to get better performance. To me, Hobie sets the bench mark to what other kayak manufacturers try to follow. I don't own a Hobie. This is just my personal observation. I have a Jackson Liska for the river and Old Town Auto Pilot 120 for my local reservoirs. I have been happy with both kayaks. I am not opposed to Jackson kayaks at all. I do think they could have knocked out of the park on this kayak with a different rudder design.
@Etxpaddlesports2 жыл бұрын
@@BassDudeFishn the rudder on the Knarr (and other Jacksons) is inline (protected) by the keel of the boat, and incredibly resilient. Just about the only way to mess one up would be to drop it off of a trailer or truck bed onto the concrete, or to go backwards through shallow rocks/timber. And Hobie may have “set the bar” according to some people, but that doesn’t put a ceiling in place for future accomplishments in layout, engineering, and overall fishability, like the Knarr has done on many fronts. But to address your “concern” (over a design that you haven’t even tried out on the water), this boat will turn inside of a PA’s turning radius. Easily. The Knarr and the PA14 are two COMPLETELY different boats.

I've run my FD's on rivers for several years now. The rudder itself is pretty beefy and I've never had that happen. It doesn't hang lower than the skeg formed by the hull there so that isn't happening.

I like this set up a lot, several key innovations that Hobie hasn’t taken up the slack on. This is coming from a 2020 PA14 owner. The stager bungee things look way better and it is more accommodating of other track accessories, compared to just having an H-Rail. Will I change boats, not likely. But I hope this competition helps Hobie and Jackson Kayaks continue to innovate and improve upon these platforms, they seem to get better every year!

@ChadHooverFishing2 жыл бұрын
I’m not giving anyone a pass and I’m not done with what I have to say about this kayak. I’ve literally only begun. I’m getting into the real stuff when I get it on the water and really put it through the paces. That said, it’s not my job to decide company policies or even get into that. That’s up to them to decide how they want to handle and once they do I may weigh in with my opinion. We don’t even really know what they are going to do yet. I would suppose that they would do something to preserve customer loyalty. I agree with what you are saying in general terms though. If this was just a “better” pedal drive I would just call it progress and say that’s part of the evolution of a product like any other product line or series. But, since they have had significant issues with the other versions of the pedal drive I agree that there should be something a little more done than “you can buy a new one.” Thanks for the comment and let’s keep them honest as we see how it plays out.

Usually positive but to be honest tired of the companies going over board on prices. Just cause another company does it doesn’t mean everyone needs to do it. Plus there are so many Jackson owners that are having issues with their fd drives but they keep getting charged for replacements now they completely change the drive and either you need to deal with the old one or shell out a ton for the new style drive. My guess is $1000 or over. And Don’t get me wrong I Like Jackson just feel like they are forgetting about their customers that bought the older Fd drives. It’s really separating the lower class that can’t afford these kayaks. I do get they need to make money but times are rough all over. Sorry not trying to be super negative.
@ChadHooverFishing2 жыл бұрын
I hear you, but they can either improve or die. That’s the nature of business right now. At least they made the drive where you can retrofit it which usually isn’t the case when many companies upgrade their product line.
