His evolution from PAPILLON to CRUEL only took 5 years! As you say, some people may not realize that these songs are created by the same person. As a fan of Got7, I was freaked out by his solo debut PAPILLON because it was so different and creative 5 years ago. Then it happened again and again, and every time I was shocked by his creativity. And now I am amazed by CRUEL because of the same reasons again. His solo history and progress are made by himself from age 23 only, without any help from JYP. He developed Team Wang from 2 staff to now over 80 staff. How smart he is? I look forward to seeing how far he can go in the next 5 years.😊😊😊

As you may know, Papillon means butterfly in French. However, Jackson got his inspiration for his song "Papillon" from the 1973 Hollywood movie Papillon with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, which is based on the life of a French man who has been wrongly convicted of a crime and sentenced to life in prison. The man is nicknamed Papillon because he has a large butterfly tattoo on his chest. While in prison the man has to fight to overcome a lot of bad things and endure a lot of hardships in order to escape. Jackson said he kind of saw Papillon as a warrior who was ready to do battle to gain his freedom and he admired his strength and ability to never give up. With that in mind, he took that story and adapted it to create a more modern version for his song "Papillon." "Papillon" is Jackson's solo debut single from 2017, which was about 3 years after he debuted as a member of GOT7. At this time he was primarily known as a rapper, so his first few songs are more hip-hop style songs, as he worked to make his way into the western/U.S. music market. And he did several collaborations with well known western hip-hop artists. Therefore, in the song and MV Jackson is talking about feeling trapped and he wants to break free from the self doubts and all the things that are holding him back from accomplishing his goals and becoming his true self, etc. A butterfly could also be a symbol for new beginnings as it turns from a caterpillar into a beautiful insect with wings that allow it to soar. Because this was his solo debut, I think "Papillon" was a metaphor for how this was a new beginning for him as a solo artist and producer. It's a new chapter in his life where he is now able to focus on his music and the things he wants to do with his career, instead of only being known as the funny entertainer who does what other people want. This was a rebirth and new start for him as he shows off his hard work, introduces us to Team Wang and begins to build his brand and solo career, etc. It was around this time that Jackson made a deal with JYP Entertainment that 6 months out of the year he would promote and work as a member of GOT7, and then the other 6 months -- while the other members were focusing on solo activities or promoting GOT7's Japanese songs -- he would be working on his solo music and participating in solo activities in China.

"Why wasn't I invited?" 😂 I know! The thing about Jackson is he's always venturing into new territories and improving himself. Someone posted his cut from GOT7 EP just now and I was blown away yet again by how much more sophisticated he is as a vocalist and rapper now. LMLY is still my favorite too, even though everything he's released since has been top notch. Papillon was my favorite from MIRRORS but that damn album is choked full with gems like Bad Back, DWay! and On the Rocks. All the other members clowned him so bad when Papillon came out, singing "Aite, Aite, aite, aite" non stop 😂 But that way they helped him promote it too, bc he wasn't supposed to do so in Korea at the time!

You really need to check the co-ed group he formed called PANTHEPACK their album is a BOP just like jackson solo work he made the rapper sing and the singer raps and i love this about him 🥹 When someone introduces him as a rapper he always says i’m just an artist whom preforms in different fields (singing/rap/dancing…)

I not true but For me Bullet To the Heart is sequel to LMLY. It makes so much sense. Although Bullet to The heart came years before LMLY. Jackson's growth as a solo artist is so organic though. He refused all help and did it all on his own. Papillon isn't my favorite solo of his but it did mark a beginning in his long struggle to find his sound and I like going back to it occasionally as a sort of personal motivation

I actually laughed out loud when you said Jesus in Drive You Home, b/c that was my same reaction, lol. Especially when you don't know what's happening yet and he's suddenly spitting up blood, lol. It took me aback a little. Like another comment said, you'll like Bullet To The Heart, if you haven't already seen it. *Fun fact: in French, papillon (pronounced pap.E.yawn) means butterfly; in English, it is also a breed of dog that is small with long hair and large ears that resemble butterfly wings.
