Let’s not overlook the obvious... most people, myself included, can’t be outside in the sun all day without a hat; the sun beating down on my head will eventually make me nauseous. Then there is the issue of sunburnt ears... day in and day out, over years, not good. Then there’s the issue of no hair... Hats are just damn practical. They keep the sun and rain off your skin, they help you to see outside, they keep the wind from whipping your hair into your eyes, etc. Why anyone would laugh at a cowboy hat is beyond me.
@Ivftinianvs4 жыл бұрын
When I was in Austin, Texas picking out my first Stetson, an old man in the shop showed me his ears, which were missing the tops. He explained that they’d had the cancer cut off, because he didn’t wear a cowboy hat in his youth. These are functional and necessary in certain places, occupations and lifestyles.
@Wulframite3 жыл бұрын
@@Ivftinianvs and a ball cap does not protect your ears. Hat with a brim all around protects against sun and rain better. Only thing I never can correct for my hats is wind. Guess I am stubborn, I just cannot commit to wearing a string around my chin unless an armored helm is attached.

Dr. Crawford, as someone on the more progressive side of the political spectrum I'm disheartened that anyone would mock your appearance. One of the things I want is everyone, everyone to be able to express themselves. I have attracted my share of mockery and jeers when I wear my kilts. I don't let that stop me though. A nice video. I often use an American baseball cap here in Denmark. I have never played baseball and I know little about the sport, but the cap is cool and quite practical. Speaking of cowboy hats, there are actually Norwegian bunader (from old norse búnaðr - traditional national costume) that include hats for men reminiscent of some cowboy hats (eg. worn Big Valley). People use them on the national day, weddings, confirmations etc.
@wolfkittson92085 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. Seems like the idea of a national costume hasn't really been formalized here in the states. Or maybe the country is so huge the costumes are strictly regional.
@Hvitserk675 жыл бұрын
@@wolfkittson9208 In Europe, folk costumes have been around for ages, but Norwegian bunader were developed as late as in the 19th century (inspired by ancient folk costumes) in connection with the national romanticism that originated in northern Europe at this time. The American story is different, but in a way cowboy hats (with accessories) are also a kind of folk costumes.

When I was in Copenhagen in January 1999, there was a restaurant that was cowboy themed, and the barstools were western saddles. I happened to be reading a Zane Grey novel at the time, so of course I went in and ordered a hamburger with fries to eat whilst waiting for my train and reading my book.

I wore a cowboy hat during my senior year in high school. We were living in London, England, where it is rarely all that cold, but it rains and rains and rains, and I just did not like carrying an umbrella. I am not from a part of the USA where folks wear cowboy hats, though. It just seemed a practical choice, and a lot of teenagers like wearing something that makes them stand out. The cowboy hat certainly did, and it didn't bother my parents like some weirder mid-70s fashions would have. I really don't remember anyone ever mocking me, except perhaps in light jest.

The mesh makes it lovely and cool, but it's not so good in the rain.

I like how you put that..."Individual spirit". To me it kind of sounds like it's deeper than just individualism. Like the idea that I feel like looking a particular way today just doesn't cut it. There's something that stirs the soul when a man knows where he's from and he conjures images of his ancestors and tries to take root in that. But it's much more than that it speaks to remnants of culture that make people feel a sense of who they are.

I've been a big fan of Dr. Crawford for years. I love the connection to his grandfather discussed in this video. Whenever I wear a hat that is not a ski hat, or when I'm sailing - I wear cowboy hats. I work as a surgeon in Northern Vermont, so it is not a common look. When I'm overseas I wear cowboy hats as well. I was a kid in New Mexico, spent some late teenage years in Texas, graduated from college in Colorado (go Buffs), and spend the vast majority of my vacation time in Wyoming or Montana. And while the western vide comes naturally, the real reason I wear cowboy hats are: hats keep the sun and rain off your head, keep you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter and cowboy hats do this better than most, cowboy hats really look good on almost everybody, and cowboy hats say something about the wearer. I actually believe in that western code or Dr. Crawford's grandfather, it is frequently formulated in what is know as the cowboy code, which as it turns out is remarkable similar to the 9 noble virtues of Asatru (just to drive home the norse connection), and the 4 virtues of stoics. And particularly wearing a cowboy hat in places it is not often seen, Boston, Edinburgh etc... it proclaims that the wearer is proud and happy to be American. Unlike Dr. Crawford I have not had good luck with Resistol, and pretty much just wear Stetsons.

I have lived most of my life in Kentucky, the northernmost part near Cincinnati OH, where cowboy hats are not very common. At least not so much as in the parts further south. I grew up mainly wearing baseball caps, although my dad would wear a fedora. I've taken to wearing cowboy hats more for "theraputic" reasons than for any stylistic reasons. I spent a long career on the fire department, and had mildly burned my left ear many times (We had a radio pocket on our "turnout coats" and I would clip the microphone/speaker to my left side coat collar, and although we were issued nomex hoods (like a balaclava) that we wore under our helmets, I usually would keep my left ear outside of the nomex because I didn't want to miss any radio traffic. (To put this in the right context, I would find that the cord on the microphone/speaker would have the outer jacket melted.) Anyway, I've had a few skin skin cancers removed from my head, cheeks, and ears, and my dermatologist told me that if I didn't use sunscreen and wear a "wide brim" hat when outside during the times the sun was above the horizon - even during cloudy days - she would "bob my ears like a doberman pinscher!" Today, being long time retired from the fire service, I've taken to wearing boonie hats when outside doing yard work or just knocking around in jeans and a tee shirt. But if I have to be a little more dressed up, I will go back to my cowboy hat. After all, what other kind of wide brim hat choices are there?

I come from a long line of farmers here in Texas. There's a fair bit of Texas pride that runs through me but I try to tame some of that arrogance. I never felt a notion to wear a cowboy hat till I was in my twenties. Farming cattle and crops with my grandfather out in the Texas Sun well he just wore a net back hat usually says John Deere or jupy meals feed here in West,Texas. A little history that I've come to know about the iconic cowboy hat. From what I understand some of the best horse riders that ever lived we're Spaniards. When the Spaniards decided to take Mexico they brought culture with them and with the climate being hot and dry like Spain naturally wearing a cowboy hat to keep the sun off your face was a good idea. Different variations of this cowboy hat were made and of whatever materials they had at the time. If you ever see a hat with a bow tied on the inside from what I understand that is a tribute to a hat maker that has passed away. Along with the cowboy comes those famous cowboy boots. Now cowboy boots also came from Spain and they designed the boot to be pointed so they slip into a stirrup very easily. I do not think that they had my descendants in mind when they design the cowboy boots. I can speak from experience when I say that Spaniards typically have small feet. I have a 13 in foot and it is wide! almost 6" wide. I don't know if that was traits inherited from Nordics or Hobbits...lol Anyways a lot of the culture from Spain went to Mexico. Off topic: One of the more interesting things I found was that if you listen to tejano music it sounds eerily similar to polka. A Mexican guy once told me way back when... There was a fair bit of Polish, Czechoslovakian, Dutch and German people that have actually traded and moved and married Spanish and Mexican people. Mexican people had adopted the polka festive music style and it tied in very nicely with some of the traditions that Mexico has. One of the more interesting things that I find is when we learn about one's culture to understand how we differ over time we just see how much we are closer than we ever thought. I married my wife in El Paso Texas in 2013. At first glance you wouldn't think that she's Mexican. Well that's because she doesn't have any Mexican blood she has mostly Spanish and Italian but for many generations her family had lived in Mexico but if you ask her she's just as Mexican as anyone else from Mexico and I can understand that, I feel the same way about Texas. I have descendants from Welch and Scottish bloodlines and come to find out there's a fair bit of French in my blood too.

I grew up in So Cal- Huntington Beach, then to Dana Point, then, of all places, SW UT. I had never seen so many guns until I got here (not a bad thing) and so many freaking cowboy hats. I decided I prefer them to "trucker hats" on men and I have seen more actual, responsible, hard-working men here in UT than I saw in the 10 years I was in Dana Point. The cowboys here are a lot like what you call conservationists or those who have an understanding relationship with God and livestock or agriculture. Wyoming is on my bucket list. It's really just up the road. I should just go on a road trip.

From one of your no doubt many followers in Australia, Dr Crawford have you ever considered an Akubra? A genuine Australian icon, a central part of the country culture here and ultimately a maker of fine Aussie cowboy hats. In passing, as an English immigrant here to Australia, the influence that Western US culture has had on country Australia is remarkable. I think just a little like - as you have discussed - the situational parallels between the American Frontier and Norse society produced not dissimilar cultures, so in terms of music, attitudes and clothes the US cowboy culture has found very fertile ground in the Australian countryside and has been embraced as a surprisingly wholesale package. A visit to the Ekka (the annual Exhibition of agricultural produce) in any Australian town is much like stepping into a cowboy movie.

Fantastic video and rundown of the cultural aspects. Pretty much every place between the Pacific coastline and the 100th Meridian is fair game for seeing hats that aren't being worn ironically.

I don't know if you get to the Southeast much, but in rural Georgia, for instance, straw cowboy hats, at least, are not rare. You don't see them every where maybe, but they aren't seen as weird or draw attention.

"Ten gallon hat" got mentioned 😄. That phrase comes from a misunderstanding of the Spanish phrase "tan galán" meaning "so gallant" or "so handsome". One of my favorite cowboy 🤠 terms from the many that come to us from Spanish.

This is a hat that is worn in parts of Canada, Mexico, and the USA. Even in other parts of the Americas too.

I've got a Resistol straw George Strait signature that I've had for almost 25 years. It's been thru hell and then some. And I also have two Stetson beaver felt lids. One I've had for 25 years or so, and the other is a kinda newish. About 5 or 6 years old. I find myself still reaching for the old one. Fits like it was on my head at birth. Haha

a tad unrelated, but .... I did learn a bit. Storytime, hat like: My daughter wanted (she said needed) a hat, so I got her a cheap fedora mostly, to keep the sun off her face/nose while they participated in some sort of "Rendezvous" day outside at school next week. So, we were crossing a busy street on the way home and a gust of wind knocked it off her head. I told her well, it's good you have your hood still, cause it looks like rain, but she ran out into the street risking being hit by cars to get her hat. I was about to scold her, but the thing she said was, "Mom, don't worry. I made sure it had landed right side up before I picked it up." instead I just laughed and hugged her and said, "No hat is worth as much as you." and we continued home. We did discuss the names of hats. I named Stetson as a type, oooops!

One thing to mention about felt, if made of wool is that it keeps it's thermal insulation even while wet

This was a great video. I’m not a fan of cowboy hats, or hats in general, but this was like sitting down and having a conversation where we all talk about things that make us who we are, and this was your turn. Thank you. 🖤 On a secondary note, any hat that costs thousands of dollars isn’t a cowboy hat. Those are investment banker hats, CEO hats, or politician hats. At best maybe they’re surgeon hats, dentist hats, or lawyer hats, but no self-respecting “cowboy” would waste so much money just so they could show off a label. 😜

Berkeley & LA you're going to stick out wearing a western hat definitely. But not all of California is like that. You get in with people who have horses & ranches out in the country & they are definitely rockin western wear. Head up to Placerville, Yuba City, Grass Valley any of the foothill areas & it gets pretty country pretty quick especially as you make your way up the summit to Truckee & N.Tahoe. So yeah, it just depends. As a society we stopped wearing hats in general for the most part, we are much less formal now. But people who live in more rural conditions who spend time outside where weather ( snow & ice or heat/sun) can be an issue will still wear hats for practical reasons. I wore a western hat when I lived in the sierra mountains. It looked cool with my parka & fake Vuarnets :)

man, growing up in Tulsa and now living in Portland, Oregon, I literally don't go a DAY without seeing someone in a cowboy hat. Not one!

Very cool, northern Minnesota you catch a lot of guff for wearing a cowboy hat, unless it's a straw hat and you are a farmer. Then you catch it for being a farmer. I wear mine when I'm out in the woods hiking or camping. Thank you for your story and insight. 👍👍👍

Best hat I ever got, which is more like a sombrero actually I got in marfa TX by a guy named Michael Meloney. Apparently he made all the hats in the lonesome dove movies. The thing about straw hats is you can drench them in water and as it evaporates it cools you. Working in the Texas sun, a tiny felt hat doesn't really cut it.

I prefer the Stetson 'whippet.' for warm weather an a magill homburg for cold.

You're wearing an "I don't care how they do it in California" shirt, aren't you? Cause I have that same shirt lol.

I like to wear my cowboy hats out of appreciation of the culture I was born into and my family. Each side of my family were from southern Idaho, north western Montana, and North Dakota. So I’m sure it’s totally appropriate to wear it on my person, though my sister hates it ;)

There's a furrier near my parents' lake cabin in a city called Perham, MN. If you are looking for more interesting cowboy hats, look up that store. I do own a couple leather cowboy hats, that I bought at a farm show up in ND.
