Beautiful bird of paradise of Papua new guinea! beautiful as the bird itself, flying high up in the sky, over the tree tops, over the valleys, mountains and oceans it shall go. May the Lord carry you in his hands as you fly. God bless Papua New Guinea and it's people, the home of the Bird of Paradise.

Fondly remember the BAE146 sitting at Jacksons for several days. A colleague and I (both from Telikom) wandered through the airport gates, across the tarmac and spent maybe 15 minutes looking over the aircraft.

PNG in the early 80s was a peaceful, laid back place that had a bright future. International capitalism and greed has changed all that.
@ronaldbell89723 жыл бұрын
Nope..it's their own fault severe corruption from PNGean politicians, without foreign investment ie. 'international capitalism' the country would still be in dark ages, like it was before white man came

Great memories, I was there in the early 80s. I flew in the 707 a lot to Singapore and Hong Kong. Plus came in on a Cathay Pacific 747 from Hong Kong too! Port Moresby was such a great cut then. The government has ruined that country.

1958 arrived DC 6 then 64 in Super Constellation. Then Fockers Piaggio DC 3 down from Highlands in Junkers 52.

I can only dream of flying in those aircraft types. B707 & B727 are probably the oldest I can lay claim to having flown in.

First arrived at Pt. Moresby on a Lockheed Electra (1966). Pt. Moresby was a nice quiet place then. Now classified as one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Due in no small part to corruption and an ineffectual police force.

I lived in Port Moresby for 9 years, never felt in danger, never a problem, try some of those Sydney suburbs at night if you want to be scared. You probably spent your time at the hotel listening to bullshit stories and never went out.

It was starting to get rough when I left in early 1985 which is why we left. Not a good place with a young family. I travelled all over the country in my job with ANG & was never worried when I was with the local people from the Company that I knew. Great people & very friendly & always helpful, but even a lot of them were getting scared of the rascals in POM. They weren't discriminating whether their victims were expats or locals.

Qantas used to fly their 747b into POM?? Was this scheduled or an unusual visitor?
@roustus667 жыл бұрын
It was scheduled, a coupe of times a week from memory. They also flew in the B747SP occasionally.

Qantas 747 were flying into POM well into the early 90s. Not sure exactly when they stopped, but it was probably around that time as I can't recall flying them after around 1991.

Yep, back in the days when POM, Morseby and PNG in general were safe, not like the crime ridden hell hole that it has become.
