I’ve been swarmed by biting black flies in the Michigan UP several times over the years, to the point I cried...It made me crazy. No fun! We learned that our best bet was to play and explore outside when there was a good stiff breeze coming off Lake Superior. If it was a quiet day or the breeze was coming from the forest it was a no go. I ran into a convenience store trying to get away from the flies one day and the owner passed out fly Swatters to everyone...LOL

The fire tower brought back memories of climbing the fire tower in Itasca State Park near Park Rapids, MN. That park is also the headwaters of the Mississippi River where you can walk across the Mississippi River and not get your knees wet. I know you have a cabin in the North Woods somewhere. If you're ever close to Itasca it is worth the trip there to see the headwaters, the firetower, the 1930's lodge also built by the CCC. One of my favorite places in MN. You discovered too, something that I discovered about the deer flies. They did not follow me inside buildings even if there were open doors and/or windows. I don't know why, but I was safe from them as long as I was inside the structure. The mosquitoes, though, hadn't gotten the message. ;)

The first time I ever experienced Deer flies was when I was a camp councilor at a Lutheran camp in Upper Michigan. Being from Oregon's Willamette Valley we didn't have them there. horse flies though we had. They both bite and they both hurt. Sorry you got eaten alive Jack. I was looking up that Snake River to see if it was connected to the 1000+ mile long river out in the PNW, it is in fact a sub tributary of the Mississippi River by way of the St Croix River. Very cool. You've been in the Mississippi and now one of it's source rivers.

Great video. Those darn bugs! I find the thermocell work "ok" too. I'm gonna bet that if we didn't live I Minnesota, the thermocell would work better. But I don't have deer flies in the camper very often.

To get around a mushy texture of the rice, make it with cold cooked rice, best made the day before you make the fried rice! A sadly late friend made the best fried rice and here’s what she put in as flavoring for fried rice, I hope you try it sometime! 2 tsp soy sauce 1 tsp sesame oil 1/4 tsp salt 1 Tbl fish sauce 1 Tbl mirin 1/4 tsp gochujang paste (or more for spiciness) Mix together and stir into the fried rice - for camping you make it up ahead of time and store in a little jar.

Michigan is one of the places I will go when I retire and begin to travel. I already knew I wouldn’t go anywhere near it in Winter 🥶 but now ya got me wondering with the bugs… just exactly when might be a good time yo go? Any advice? Love your videos!

You must have a very understanding wife. Because this is really your life. And you're kind of a daredevil hahaha she probably worries about you. Be careful not to run over Olivia or Ellie. I'm not trying to tell you what to do but I've got a reason for telling you this I only tell you this because I care about you guys. Be very very very very very very careful not to run over the babies.

Awful bugs ugh… our backyard is right now full of mosquitoes. Cannot sit out there long. Deer flies are terrible. We had those at the house before this one. Ouch, they bite over and over again. 😮

Does Ellie stay in the cabin when you are riding. Those flies are terrible. I would just head back to the cabin. This would drive e me crazy.
