Concerning the hotdog drill: in quite a few European countries, if you order a hotdog, you are not getting it in a cut soft bun/roll (which is the American way) but rather a sausage that sticks inside a piece of a baguette. However, most shops will have a device that keeps the sausages warm alongside metal poles/fat nails that form the hole and heat up the bread. You can find them quite easily when searching for "hotdog maker". Also, note that the hole is usually prefilled with the sauces you want before you add the sausage to make sure you have some throughout.

The reason onions sting your eyes has nothing to do with the smell, and it makes perfect sense that the goggles would work once you understand why onions sting your eyes, so here is a super simplified explanation: When you cut an onion, you break its cells open which releases chemicals from inside the onion that mix together. These mixed chemicals create a gas called syn-Propanethial-S-oxide. This gas rises up and reaches your eyes, reacting with the water in your eyes to form a mild acid. The acid irritates your eyes, making them sting and produce tears to wash the irritant away. So in short, if your eyes are covered, the syn-Propanethial-S-oxide cannot reach your eyes, and so, no stinging eyes :)
