He was just portrayed as far more sullen and angry than he should have been, in my opinion. So much so that a person I watched with who is totally unfamiliar with the story got hung up on what could have happened to him that changed him into such a positive guy in the present.

I think they nailed 90%+ of the cast. And the ones that they didn't aren't really that big deals in the grand scheme. I mean, when they first announced that they were doing a live action, who would've thought that the cast would be some overwhelmingly good that we'd be complaining that they didn't quite nail Nojiko or Beckman.

Honestly Beckman isn't too big of a deal for me. We haven't seen the character really get the spotlight yet, so a lot of the criticisms are based entirely on his appearance. Which is fair to a degree, but I also thought that Shanks and Arlong were miscast based on their appearance in the trailer but then the actors COMPLETELY sold me on the characters once they had a chance to shine. Hopefully it's the same way with Beckman, though I don't think we'll be seeing him for a while.

Going in, I knew I was going to like live action Buggy, but what I didn't expect was for Helmeppo to actually be one of my favorite portrayals of the lot. A live action adaption doesn't necessarily need to translate all of the super exaggerated faces and reactions to real life, but seeing it actually done well like with Helmeppo is just very nice.

I heard somewhere that many of the scenes in the live action that we think are original are present in the manga as some sort of extras, but are not there in the anime. Also, I am surprised by the fact that both Zeff and Mihawk preached to Garp that a new era was coming and that Luffy was something special and they wanted to see what he could do in the future.

My problem with Morgan isn't the casting so much as the fact he didn't do anything wrong. Like he doesn't abuse his men, or force them to massage his ego with absurd decorations, or promote violence against little girls with rice balls, all he does is abuse Helmeppo a bit, and at the time Helmeppo deserves it. So why is he literally tied to a cross by Garp? It didn't make a lot of sense.

Gaudy paintings of himself could have come from his personal finances-narcissistic but not criminal. And the marines not stepping in when Helmeppo yelled at a little girl? C’mon. Good character, great episode, but they definitely should have shown Morgan actually being a little more corrupt.

Christian Convery plays young Sanji, but he also stars as Gus in Sweet Tooth and is a phenomenal actor, so was very confident he would kill it when I found out he was cast and he did not disappoint! Also, side note: Zeff was played by Craig Fairbrass who was in the British Soap Opera, Eastenders in the late 90's early 2000's, so I wasn't sure what to expect seeing as I've only every seen him as a London Hardman, but he was absolutely perfect. His on screen chemistry between both Christian and Taz (Skylar who played present day Sanji) felt so real. The Baratie arc is a favourite of mine and Sanji is my favourite Strawhat (I used to do Tae Kwon Do which is a leg heavy M.A. and I was a chef sooooo...) and they all did such a good job of telling that story. Extra Credit to Taz for learning Kickboxing and how to cook Gourmet food for the role. He became an instant new obsession of mine 😂

I didn't like what they did to Nojiko. In the Manga, she was such a chill supportive sister willing to take action against Arlong. The only reason she got her tattoos was out of solidarity with nami, yet in the LA they took all her character traits and made her super unsympathatic. On the other Hand, Bo D. gard was nailed the most.

100%!! This was my biggest complaint too. Her sister and the villagers LOVED Nami and were willing to fight (and die) for her after her treasure got stolen. Nojiko was done dirty in this live adaptation.

Nojiko is just ugly and unlikable. Dunno what people find in her. In the manga she was hotter than Nami, more courageous when it came to the fight, and more chill overall. So she was a perfect older sister. Here she's just a furniture. That does nothing, represents nothing and achieves nothing.

Arlong Park was definitely the biggest miss for me, in my opinion. It honestly brought the show down a whole point for me (and almost another half point when I saw that Genzo had no pinwheel lol). Their decision to have the villagers and Nojiko not know of Nami’s true intentions watered down the emotional payoff by quite a bit and was really just baffling, considering how on point the creators had been for the most part with their changes. The other big thing that I didn’t care for I can at least understand the reasoning behind it. I always thought Luffy’s indifference to learning of Nami’s past really indicative of his character: he had already decided that Nami was a good person and his friend so the backstory was irrelevant to him. Just total, unwavering confidence in his friends and himself. They’re clearly trying to give Luffy more emotional depth and have him be more self-reflective, which does make sense, but I think he loses an essential piece of Luffiness in the process.

I never was a big fan of One Piece, it just never caught my curiosity and didn't hook me when I initially tried it, BUT BOY OH BOY was the live adaptation really good! I knew a bunch of the story bits/spoilers from friends who like to talk about the contents of episodes, so I knew most of the story up to Arlong Park, and Koby/Garp stuff, and I think the way they handled the marines, Koby, Helmeppo and Garp was drastically better, and my friends that love the show pretty much all loved it too. Buggy and Mihawk (edit- oh, and Garp and Zeff) are tied for #1 for favorite portrayals, followed closely by all of the Strawhat crew and Shanks. I think they all did very well where there wasn't really anyone that I heavily disliked. ALSO I love that they shot so much of the show practically and on site at Cape Town South Africa for that crystal clear water, built the sets including the boats, and used makeup to make the characters look the way they do instead of relying on CGI too much. Like obviously they used CG, but it was sparingly enough where the world felt lived in and real! All in all, I'm excited for season 2, hope they keep going strong, and while I wait, I've been watching One Piece from the beginning in a new light :)

I've watched the entire live action with Japanese dub, because why not, right? And since they kept the original voice actors for the characters from the anime - the delivery of the lines was perfect. Which means the only thing I could complain about would be actual acting. And there is nothing there to complain about, really... For a lot of these characters they were accepted quickly by the community when the anime was in its infancy because of the voice actors pouring their souls into molding these characters to perfection. It shows they can deliver any line as their characters effortlessly. And the live action cast obviously put a lot of hours into mannerisms and little quirky actions that can easily go over the heads of the new viewers but are top level details for the hardcore fans of 25 years. As for the ranking itself - I'm pretty much on the exact same page as Jack with the cast, few could've been done better with more screen time or meaningful interactions with other characters, but some of them will probably get that chance later if the show hits it off with more amazing seasons.

Zepher, yes he did not have many lines. But it washow he presented himself. He cared about Sanji but knew Sanji would waste his talents there. He understood Garp, two old rivals now friends to a degree. He nailed the cranky forward appearance and softness when Sanji left. You can make a whole character study how to make a character work as well as that actor did Zepher. He just 100% that role and the costume department nailed his look

A pet peeve of Ussop's fight is the ketchup. I'm unreasonably pissed off by it. It feels like it was just thrown in for it being there. He plays dead and one second later he screams at Chew, making it meaningless. There's no moment of hesitation or using it for a sneak attack. It feels like it could be cut out and nothing would change. But the rest of the series is prety good, this just something that I find supremely annoying.

Ben Beckmann was _not_ the actor's fault. It was that his hair and make-up sort of made him feel like an afterthought. Like they said, "We got Lucky Roux and Yassop in there but we need to have Ben Beckmann." "Uh... Let's put him here." Garp was perfect. Garp's immaturity would not translate to live action. They were able to keep the essence of Garp without and still have you buy into him being a Marine Vice-Admiral and someone who deserves that rank. I would say the only difference is that this Garp kind of uses that "Hero of the Marines" moniker whereas the manga/anime one couldn't care less about it. Genzo was a miss for me because they cut out his two big scenes, telling Nami the village knew what she was doing the whole time and making Luffy promise that Nami would come home safely. Captain Morgan was not that bad of a captain in the Live-Action, IMO. Yes, he was tough and not the brightest but the one in the manga was way worse. Manga Morgan was actively killing his own men. Usopp was also a miss but that's not Jacob's fault. Syrup Village cut out a lot of Usopp's characterization. Shame on you for not putting Bogards in this video! lol

So, even though some of the characters may have been a slight miss, I think with the time constraints everything was awesome. I wouldn't change anything. Older viewer. Have been watching anime on and off for at least 30 years, but never got into one piece (side note I have lived in Japan for short periods). Have been massively depressed by hollywood offerings of late, but One Piece blew my mind. I do think Sanji's back story was the most well done and compelling (Nami's probably second). It was good to see strong male characters with flaws and female characters with flaws who overcome those flaws (Nami's arc was amazing). As a person new to the One Piece series my biggest main cast issue was Usopp. It could be that i'm just not used to his character, but the acting seemed very weak for his first few episodes (like he hadn't figured out the character yet), and then got stronger near 7 & 8 (but that may be because I liked the character more?)

The only mistake they missed in the live action is when luffy encounters koby (in the anime) He hits him Punches him Slaps him Any type of hitting works But in the liveaction(as far as i remember) he doesent hit him a single time.

I'm absolutely in love with Luffy and Sanji, and Nami and Zoro grew on me, but.... I dunno... Usopp's energy is off. He's not very quick-witted and I found most of his jokes(?) grating :/ Also Usopp was the least developed--like, his entire arc was used for Kaya and Helmepo. Not disappointed with the improvements in those two, but it's a strange choice to ignore an actual crew member in favor of them small-time fellows. That said, I've got my fingers crossed for Usopp next season, cuz hopefully he'll get a few more moments to shine. Or at very least the writers could give us an actual reason to like him beyond the actor just being cute.

Honestly, as much as I love your list I'd go even HIGHER for several of them, like Krieg as short as his time was was aboslutely 1000% completely perfect imo, Nami I'd put RIGHT under Luffy and Sanji as top tier SH casting, Coby I'd absolutely put near the very top of perfect for me personally, Bogard was honestly shockingly good for what a minor character he is and I'd have put him in high Good, Roger for me I'd put in low Perfect, Cabaji I'd put in high Good and ALVIDA would DEFINITELY be in Very Strong, she was awesome and straight up BETTER than she was in the manga imo. Overall what an awesome first season, they really nailed so much, can't wait for S2.

I think the actor who plays jacob from twilight could've made a great luffy when he was younger
