Arlong Park/Cocoyashi is the arc that got me hooked. It went from being more carefree and episodic to a more emotional story with deeper themes popping up. Plus, Nami crying and Luffy being there regardless of why was amazing. Makes me tear up every time and makes me want to fight someone too. It was that good both sub and dub

Alabasta was the proto Yonko arc which makes sense since at the beginning Oda thought he only had 5 years for the story so he didn't even think of the 7 warlords at the beginning. I think its likely that he had planed for one of the Yonko to be the opposition instead of Croc.

I'm so surprised every time I hear people not enjoying the Syrup Village arc as much as I did. To me it was the arc that truly established what One Piece was. Silly, goofy moments and quirky characters, a truly terrifying villain, characters with determination and the will to fight for what they believe in with all they have and the bonds between people...In retrospect the scales were much lower than what we see these days of course, but it was just as personal. I suffered right along with Kaya thoughout all of this and I was so incredibly impressed with Usopp who wasn't an experienced fighter or exceptionally strong and barely got to show off his true sniping skills but who still did everything in his power to protect Kaya, the kids and his village. Up until this point I had casually enjoyed One Piece but wasn't really invested. That arc? That changed everything for me and I was hooked. And Lysop became and stayed my favourite character up until the timeskip. Thank you for the video Jack, it was a lot of fun to hear your thoughts and impressions on it as someone who is still newer to the fandom compared to those of us who have been here from the start :D

There is one scary thing however. Pre-timeskip have 22 arcs. Some were very short but even then the thing is for the time being and for a kind of equal numbers of episodes post timeskip only have 7 arcs. If you like that arcs don't lose too much time for the pacing, post timeskip won't be a gift.

I think what got me hooked and made me say "i _want_ to binge this" was baratie. i loved sanji, his endless same joke wasn't as tiresome back then, and also, i don't mind it as much as other guys do. kicking is cool, i love cooking, he helped gin. i haven't seen much of him post-timeskip because i'm not watching until its finished. but before baratie i was a little bored by how syrup village dragged. on a rewatch, it's not bad, it's just episodes were so packed and you were learning, it felt longer than it was. there wasn't a "flashback to last episode for 4 solid minutes then intro" for a 15 minute episode

The list is pretty good. But, I remember that watching for the first time, I felt Marineford dragging, as did Impel Down and Ennies Lobby. With ID dragging the most followed by MF and finally EL. For me, peak OP was Water 7. The pacing was almost flawless (except for the Aqua Laguna thing, which you so rightfully mentioned). We had Usopp leaving the crew, Robin "betraying" the crew, Merry's prognosis, the CP9 reveals, Franky's reveal as Cuttty Flam, another "walk", and the beautiful city of Water 7 itself. Worldbuilding, suspense, betrayal, mystery, heartbreak, action, great backstory, beautiful setting, inner crew dynamics. Water 7, for me, was PEAK OP! I agree that Whiskeypeak deserves a category of its own, if only for that Zoro vs Luffy fight, which makes no sense at all and went against everything Luffy stands for. I would put Skypiea lower than AL. Lastly, I just cannot fathom Thriller Bark's place! Even you, Jack, made TB just bearable, barely. It's the one pre TS arc that dragged on the most, had an abysmal side cast (rare for One Piece). Moria should have easily defeated the entire crew on his own, forget with his own crew and Oars. Nightmare Luffy made no sense. Kuma's actions made no sense. Usopp being "negative" made no sense. Yes, Brook's backstory was heartbreaking and the Laboon reveal was just Oda-level story telling. But, I would still put TB between Orange Town and Reverse Mountain. At least Orange Town had Buggy and RM had Laboon and Crocus.

Personally, Sabaody is my favorite pre-timeskip arc. spoilers: U had Rayleigh, the Celestrial Dragons and rookie pirates introduced, learning about the discrimination of the slaves and how superior the celestrial dragons are, Luffy punching a celestrial dragon, Kizaru coming in, Kuma seperating the Strawhats ect.

Not to be confused with different cities in the same island like Alabasta, there we keep the same goal and moving in between cities in order to reach the same goal... We do LEAVE Water 7 where we wanted to get the merry fixed and then to go to Ennies lobby were we are trying to get franky and robin back... So both different arcs... then we LEAVE Ennies Lobby to go Water Seven where we are trying to get a grip about everything that happened, lost Merry, Lost Usopp etc... Therefore a different Arc...

The thing about long ring long land that pissed me off that I never see anyone talk about is when you think about it the arc actually has crazy high stakes considering the straw hat crew almost lost multiple members and could have been disbanded and yet somehow we were still fine with foxy cheating and making up his own rules and we never took the competition really seriously. That’s why I was never able to chill and enjoy the humor and fun moments in the arc because the whole time I was thinking ok what bullsh*t stuff is foxy gonna do next that’s gonna lead to us losing another crew member and how is that NOT going to lead to a serious and emotional reaction from Luffy and the rest of the crew.

Kaido backstory kept to a minimum because Oda didn't want to reveal certain things too early, Big Mom amnesia going nowhere, Tama broken af DF, Zoro fighting a literal rare human but the plot didn't go anywhere it's just for the sake of "bro is fighting a rare human", the first and second act dragging so much but suddenly the pacing get faster out of nowhere, and so many things i can complain about. Maybe in the future we can agree Wano is good in retrospect (especially if Oda reveal what happened in God Valley and the whole Rocks debacle), but now it's nowhere reaching Water 7, Enies Lobby, and Marineford. I even say no arc after timeskip can reach the height of these three arc (maybe Luffy vs Katakuri, but the whole arc is good till the point of Big Mom birthday cake got destroyed and it goes downhill).

The "Worst Generation" consists of Luffy, Zoro, Trafalgar Law, Eustiss Kid, Killer, Jewelry Bonney, Capone "Gang" Bege, Basil Hawkins, Scratchman Appoo, X Drake, Mad Monk Urouge and "Blackbeard" Marshall D. Teach. Luffy and Zoro both made their first appearance in One Piece chapter and episode 1, though Zoro's first manga appearance may have been in chapter 2. Blackbeard first appeared at Jaya. So infact it was the 11 Supernova's and not the "Worst Generation" that was introduced at Sabaody.

Also i know u have only seen the anime but if arcs rly drag on like Skypiea or Enies Lobby the anime is usually to blame for that. Coming up in the anime u have some of the arcs that suffered most from this I hope u can find a solution so u don't have to watch all the fluff. Im talking the first 8 minutes of an epsiode being recaps then four minutes to show every character staring at each other. It gets rly bad and thats also the time when i switched over to reading the manga.
