I am always speechless EVERY SINGLE time i hear this. I discover something new, breathtaking and brilliant each time I listen. Jacob Collier is an old soul...choosing this classic song and like every other song he has covered...made it his own. You know i love to watch "first time reactions" to hearing this song. It moves so many...young and old...from all backgrounds to complete TEARS. I see this mostly toward the end of the song "Waiting round the bend, Huckeberry friend, find the rainbows end".....almost everyone reacting breaks down and cries at THIS PART. They are overtaken by the simple BEAUTY of the song and then finally are just overwhelmed by the whole experience of what they are hearing. Jacob Collier you are truly truly gifted. I just sat at the piano for 2 hours trying to write some a cappella music for my end of year assignment, I left with 8 bars. 2 hours resulted in 8 bars. That's like 15-20 seconds of music. I have four parts. Jacob has 20 billion! The fact that he wrote like 5-6 minutes of intense harmony's in SEVEN DAYS just further highlights how lucky we all are to be alive at the same time as this genius. Edit: the entire reason im doing a cappella in the first place is because of Jacob's inspiration.

I absolutely CAN’T believe that I’ve never heard of this guy until tonight. When I listened to this, I can’t explain exactly what I felt. It was like I was listening to the music that should play while my soul ascends to heaven, or some sort of higher plane. To say that I had chills throughout the entire piece would be an understatement, and when he hit that final chord, it was like a physical _vibration_ of pure joy shook me from my toes up to the top of my head. Still, I can’t fully put into words what listening to it for the first time was like. This. Arrangement. Is. _PHENOMENAL!!!!_ In every sense of the word, this is _incredible._ Thank you for blessing the world with this absolute masterpiece, Jacob. I cant help but feel like it bends between a Major Pentatonic scale, Mixolydian, and even Lydian at times. Other than that you could look at it as one continuous giant scale chord like someone already pointed out but. Its more arped than being sung at once at the same time and some of the accapella comes and goes if u look at the faces coming in going its apparent. It could be a simple quartel chord and theres just melody that arps over it to influence the sounds of the scales or scale hes envoking.

@Tommy gibstain I'm with you here. It's so dense; every phrase has so many things going on. Its complication is the focus, not motives or anything you'd connect with. Music becomes more math and technicality and that's where many people disconnect. I also don't like the mix. Original is much more organic, feels(/is) far less processed, and is exactly as complex as it needs to be. Collier deserves recognition for effort, but this wasn't necessary. This comes off much more like an exercise than it is a musical experience. Of course, all opinion here. And theory is why I'm involved in music, for any further curious about where this is coming from.

Oh I hope not. To listen... really listen... to Jacob's performances takes WORK. I don't believe in "heaven" but if I did, I'd want it to be a place of PEACE and QUIET... not a never ending kalaidescope of chords and dischords. He presents us with a smorgasbord of multi-coloured sound that dazzles and captures and suspends our senses in mid air. Jacob is obviously an unique talent and I treasure him as I would the rarest of gems. But sometimes a simple hot dog makes a satisfying meal.

He doesn't care about the lyrics nearly as much as what the music feels like. There is a discernible difference between the original emotion conveyed to what he is trying to do. That isn't to say that Willie Nelson's version is bad, because it has emotion behind it and the lyrics affect you. This is just taking the idea of the music in a completely different direction and still evoking powerful emotion.
