When I was in Kyoto I spent almost all of my time at BiVi Nijo playing arcade games and coin game while chain smoking. I hit the Super Mega Jackpot on the Mario Party 8 coin game and a whole crowd gathered to watch it go down. A lady came out with a golden box and walked up to me and opened it towards me. I thought just became a millionaire, but it was just a voucher that said if I won 2 more times I could pick a prize from the gift shop. It was one of the most insane things to happen to me.

Smoking indoors is still pretty common in Europe too. Germany (depending on the state), Switzerland (depending on the Canton), Denmark, Portugal, Croatia and Slovakia allow smoking throughout in small pubs/cafes and smoking rooms in larger establishments. Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Slovenia Poland and Estonia allow just smoking rooms. Definitely if you get the chance come visit us in Europe and enjoy what our smoking culture has to offer. If you can, visit Bosnia. You can smoke in the airport, shopping malls and pretty much everywhere inside except the hospital.

Japan banned indoor smoking in venues a few years ago, from 2019-2020 is when they made a change. Smoking used to be allowed in almost every restaurant. Sometimes leaving the weekends only off or on for smoking in the premise. So that it would still be a smoking & family area. Almost every building had a vent area hood/smoking area for people to go to. Japan is essentially the 80's to 90's of americas casual smoking. Most homes also have these vents in kitchens so that the smoke doesn't damage the house as much.

I was raised in a family of smokers, but never took up the habit. Only myself and my grandfather didn’t smoke, it baffled my whole family! I went to Tokyo twice in 2001, and smoking was everywhere! I wandered into a 2-story McDonald’s and the whole second floor was smoking. I guess the city has changed quite a bit, so a place like you’re at would be really useful for smokers. Even tho, I like your style of videos, new subscriber!

If you make it out to less western-facing or more traditional areas in Japan you can find a lot more cafes you can smoke in. A lot of the small business cafes seem to be like that in Kyoto as well

I'm a firm non-smoker, and I hate being around people smoking. But recently I went to japan and accidentally want to an old smoking cafe in Kyoto, and we already ordered before we actually noticed someone start smoking. I wont lie, it was actually one of my favourite moments on my trip, Japanese cigarettes smell a lot more 'light' than Australian smokes. It was run by this old guy and the coffee was amazing, and the atmosphere was so unique. Ive been craving to return to the cafe, which I never thought I would think, since I still HATE being around smoking in Australia. If you are ever in Japan, just give it a go, worst case you have a quick drink and leave. But I promise you wont have an experience like it anywhere else in there world. Edit: The Cafe was 'Colorado Coffee Shop'. If you are ever in Kyoto, I highly recommend. Just remember to be respectful and quiet in the shop :)

I went to Carlsbad in the Czech Republic in 2014 with some friends, and back then you were sill allowed to smoke indoors at most places. It was surreal, coming from the UK where there were 0 public places where you can smoke, to a place where you can escape the bitter chill (we went during the winter), sit down at a table, take off your coat and relax knowing that you can light one up without having to stand in the cold and freeze was simply amazing. I got to experience how life was like before I was born, from the start of the 21st century up until around the mid-2000's when smoking indoors in public places was slowly but surely getting banned in most countries, at least in the western world. I wish there were still dedicated places in the UK (and the US) where you can smoke indoors, if there are I've never heard of them. I understand that smoking is bad for your health, but for those of us who still do smoke, it would be nice to go to a place where we aren't forced to stand in the cold like shivering rats, while our non-smoker friends remain warm inside. Great video! Reminded me of the good old days, will definitely revisit it when I'm feeling nostalgic!

I was in Japan about 10 years ago before many of these laws took effect. I had quit smoking for about 7 years at that point, but let myself enjoy it for the week (and yes I've been smoke free since). As much as I am anti-smoking right now, TBH it really felt nostalgic and reminded me a lot of my youth. In Japan in 2014 I was able to smoke in bars and indoor areas. Even the house I rented allowed smoking indoors. In the early 90s in Canada you could smoke everywhere, malls, coffee shops, restaurants etc. As a kid/young teen we smoked a lot - something that seems downright heinous today, but at the time I really did enjoy it along with the social aspect of it. Smoking was so common that even though we were clearly underage, nobody cared. I remember smoking at the arcade playing pinball, MVC etc. At the time that I was in Japan, I was smoking at a bar, chatting with a local and they were telling me new laws were about to come in to make it illegal to smoke indoors. It's definitely for the best. I wouldn't light a cigarette again for anything, but I can easily admit it was a very enjoyable experience - not worth it at all in terms of health impact - but enjoyable in the moment.

The leaves used in Peace are not only Japanese Virginia leaves, but also a blend of over 400 kinds of Virginia leaves collected from all over the world. The leaves are aged for a year, and a professional (such as a perfumer) decides the composition according to the time. When Peace was first released, it was sold at a high price as an ultra-premium cigarette, but it is now sold at a relatively low price. Also, if you smoke Peace without a filter, it is preferable to smoke Peace in a can (tobacco in a can, 50 cigarettes). Because it is a can, the quality has hardly deteriorated since production, and the tobacco has a high moisture content, so it has a rich aroma and smoothness that cannot be obtained with other cigarettes. Canned Peace is often sold not at convenience stores but at privately run tobacco stores.

I live in Shanghai and Smoking inside is also not legally allowed here, however, in some area, especially some BBQ restaurant and some bars, at night when you are there, you can smoke cigs inside, and no one would come up to you to stop doing this. I start smoking for 3 years, and of course, I know smoking is bad for health, me and others. So every time I smoke inside, to some extent, I felt guilty, even if that's "allowed". BUT, by the time you walk into a cafe, the background music is relaxing , you order a nice cup of coffee, and find a nice position to sit. Then, you light up a cig and smoke, look around, and nobody cares about what you've done, this feeling is absolutely AMAZING!

I quit 20 years ago, but now and again I will have a dream where I'm smoking and it's somehow magically fixing all problems =P I quit because my dad died of a lung disease and it was the most horrifying thing I've seen in my life, still to this day, and I watch a lot of horror movies. I was wondering about why I started smoking, and I realised that ciggerettes give people the illusion of managing their stress. You deliberately create a habit that sets up a craving that is easily sated at reguar points during the day. All it takes to competently fix that little craving problem is to suck in smoke from a white stick, and here you are "meeting your needs", smashing it out the ball park on every drag. Maybe that's why poorer people are like 4 times more likely to smoke than wealthy people, or something like that. Not a day goes by where I don't think to myself that quitting was one of the best things I ever did for myself. I usually think it when I'm on the toilet for some reason, even though I never smoked on the toilet -- not even once!
