I'm enjoying this video 3 yrs after you posted, Jacob. What a pleasure to watch you and your dad enjoy a beautiful day on the water, fishing together! PLUS the good food you caught!!! My father was a hunter & observing his happiness when he brought home Elk and quail for our table is one of my earliest memories. (that would have been after WWII post 1945) As a woman, there is nothing as exciting and wonderful as having a man bring home food he harvested! (as a young mom, I raised rabbits for our table -- I was content knowing they were raised on clean feed in very large hutches.) Time on the ocean is time well spent. Congratulations on your lifestyle. Very admirable!

Halibut . One of the most tasteist fish in the ocean . I worked on an Icelandic longline boat and now and again we would put a Redfish head on the hooks going out .With some good results !

When I lived in Alaska my other half's cousin went halibut fishing. I took some pieces, put McCormick grill mates seasoning... Three different ones...and corn meal. Placed the seasoning in a Ziploc tossed the fish in... Lightly coated... Heated a fry pan with just a little olive oil... Skin side down until halfway cooked, flipped them over and finished cooking... Don't over cook it turns kinda chewy

Looks like fun. But one quick bit of advice. Buy a vacuum packing machine. It doesn't need to be a big expensive one, but I've had such good luck with meat and veggies frozen in the thick pouches with no air. But you can get a decent smaller commercial type one for about $300. But I've had a $135 food saver since 2005 that has only needed new foam gaskets every few years. It really keeps foods fresh and freezer burn free.

I fished halibut about 10 miles off Homer Alaska, and they are interesting to catch. But the meat is incredible and even a guy who doesn’t like “fishy” LOVES halibut. Those fish are great around the 30-50 pound range, but I’ve seen that they can get as large as 800#!!!

@jacobknowles54214 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can deff target them on rod and reel, I never really do it. But if I was going to I would rig multiple hooks behind a weight drop shot style. Put some fresh cut bait on the hooks. Drift an edge while bouncing the weight on bottom.
@bryanmarshall68783 жыл бұрын
@@jacobknowles5421 and Keegan, that's the exact rig I use, basically a little bit heavier duty haddock rig. Grabbed a nice one out on Jeffries this summer out of Portsmouth on my boat. And you are right about the meat to size ratio. Great vid!

In Maine, they winter over in the same coves that are dragged for scallops, seaurchins, and mussels. They ones win the lottery and don't get smashed, will bite on alewives the last 2 weeks of May and the first 19 days of June.

I'm a juggler. Best skill you can learn. If you drop something, it rarely hits the floor. So I got cocky and flirted with knives. Then torches. But huge fish hooks flailing around on a line from the depths? No. No thanks.
@pjbth2 ай бұрын
16% of these guys brought up don't survive after being released. That seems like one of those weird stats where more than 1 in 10 die but also these fish can be coming up from from crazy depths sometimes around 750 I've been on a tour fishing before and they do that in a couple of minutes than have to go right back down. You are killing like 100% of people trying that. These fish are tough for being so flaky and tender 😂
