The most important skill for a jazz musician is the ability to listen, and let other bandmembers speak when needed; all the chops in the world are worthless if you can't use them in a democratic way with the rest of the band. If it's the choice between playing with the most skilled musician versus the musician who locks in and doesn't show off, any jazz musician would pick the latter in a heartbeat.

I googled it in Japanese! It seemed that Jacob was the main guest of the public video recording event for the street piano temporarily installed at Queen’s Square Yokohama. I am not sure if he asked some musicians to get together there or not. The only thing I know is a lot of musicians including professionals and amateurs wanna have a session or a duet with Jacob! I agree, as you said, it's so rare to happen to see a performance played by world class musicians who just “happen to show up” around random public pianos. But it happens sometimes!! Improvisation takes a lot of practice! Also there is no such thing as a failed musician. The first step to improvising is just hanging out and playing notes within the scale. When you first start it won't sound great. It'll sound like your just practices scales with a bit of extra "flare". But as you practice and get better and better you'll build your musical intuition and you'll have a better "feel" of what sounds good next. All of the greatest musicians in the world, household names, all had to start as a beginner. They all had to tap their first key, strum their first string, depress the first piston. Only you can decide if you want to continue playing. If you want to, you absolutely should. You owe it to yourself to pursue goals you deem exciting.

@@curtisbme An incredibly popular American song from 42 years ago made by a 3 time Grammy winner and a man who is widely considered to be one of the founders of the smooth jazz genre. Combine that with many Japanese peoples' fascination with the West and it's completely believable. If you're really good at playing an instrument then odds are you'll have it with you a lot of the time to practice or play at shows for people. Hell, he could've seen the guy playing the piano and decided to run out to his car and get his trumpet to join in. Who knows?

Yup yup! Lots of very good communication, but also minimal as they followed a very standard jazz form. Main melodic lines, followed by solos, followed by trades, and either into the melodic line again, or straight to outro (which is what they did). Hang out at enough live jazz and you'll see this all the time. Its why people can literally just come together and play - as improvised as everything is, there's a very well known structure embedded into the scene.

If I saw this video without any context, I would think that it’s just a regular performance the both of you have practiced for quite a bit. But knowing what I do now, I’m just blown away at how you blend in or give way to each other without being dissonant, all done with no words spoken to each other. I heard the saying that music speaks for itself, but this has to be the first time I’ve seen evidence of it. Truly remarkable performance. Wow, I fell in love with Ueishi-san's sound with Jacob's sound. As Jacob said, yes, he was playing his trumpet just like he was singing a song. I totally agree. That made me want to learn the trumpet and generate Ueishi-san's sweet, meticulous and PLAYFUL tone just like I felt the same way whenever I see Jacob's performance. I love you guys' improvisations, that is always very important to me!! As there are lyrics of "Just two of us", I could imagine you guys built a lot of colorful castles in the sky under a brilliant rainbow!! By the way, I went to see the Jacob's Jazz band on Oct. 15th for the first time as a Jazz band, and that was the most enjoyable and amazing live performance as a jazz band I have ever seen in my life. I was bouncing in the seat naturally with headbanging a little bit, that I was trying not to be noticeable, however, people around me ended up noticing me doing that anyway. Live performance is always the best!! Looking forward to seeing you again in your concert, Jacob!!😘😘😘😘😘
