Btw my editor told me that a ps2 fat taking forever to load a game, but then working fine once it’s booted up, is pretty common for an old ps2 and indicates that the laser is on the way out (makes sense). The interesting part - he said the supposed reasoning for why it takes so long to load, but then plays the game fine, is because the security on the disc is more difficult to read than the data itself. So when it’s trying to display the disc in the browser, it’s checking to make sure it’s a valid ps2 disc (harder to read), then once that’s done it boots up and reads the disc data (easier to read)

The old 30000-series fats have lots of trouble reading dual layer DVDs (like GT4). The early fats also focused more on CDs because PS1 was still very popular and many early PS2 games were also on CDs (blue discs). I have never heard of the security part being more difficult to read though but it would make sense. 50000 and later models have much better lasers however 90000-series slims have some problems with some PS1-games. 50000-series is also the quietest version based on my experience.

Same here!! First console my folks ever gifted me. We didn't grow up wealthy. My dad made it happen though and he got a hook up from his coworker and got me the fat ps2 for $30 I believe back in 2010 and it came with a controller, memory card and games Dynasty warriors 4, Vice City, NFS Most wanted and The Bouncer. Worked great, those games have always been my go to. I now have 2 fat ps2s one Jap and one US version. And 2 slims. In my opinion the ps2 will always be the best console ever made for its time.

The thing with the PHAT PS2s is this, if the PS2 played a certain number of DVD films, the Laser in the disc drive would tend to mess up and would need to be replaced. During the early 2000's and sometime after 2005, repair shops (like Gamestop) would charge an arm and a leg to anyone wanting to repair their PS2's disc drive since getting those parts was difficult. I had that happen to my PS2, I would play DVDs in mine all night long to help me sleep (my favorite DVDs to play were 'Memoirs of a Geisha' and 'House of Flying Daggers'), and the laser eventually stopped playing DVDs and DVD-ROM discs, but it would play Compact Discs and Compact Disc based PlayStation games (such as PS1 games). If you're wanting to, possibly, still use the disc drive in the future, I would look into changing the disc drive to a working one, or either swapping it for a new one that doesn't have that flaw (one that is specifically made for the PHAT PS2 specifically).

I got a PS2 slim for christmas in 2003 as well! It came with Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec and Metal Gear Solid 2. And oh man, when Call of Duty 1-3 came out I remember thinking they were so realistic lmao. Being able to watch DVD's was also a huge deal back then. It's crazy that these used to be the nicest thing some people owned!

In my experience the fat ps2 disc read error can usually be fixed in like 15 minutes. It's easy to get in there and clean the laser and the fact the warranty seal is intact is a good sign it's probably just dust use q tips and rubbing alcohol

I got my original PlayStation 2 at Goodwill for 15 bucks! It came with the remote and sensor, the DVD download disc, all the manuals, the original box, two controllers, four memory cards, and even Crash Bandicoot the Warth of Cortec. It was all in good and working condition. What a steel!

There's a lot of empty space taken up by the HDD bay in the fat one. Plus the Slim had its power supply external, which saved further space. Removing the automatic disc-tray and making it manually loading all together made it as small as it is.

I had the PS2 Slim in Satin Silver when it released brand new, gifted to me by mother from the UK. From that year to 07 I played that thing religiously, had it modchipped cause my country never had official game stores and most ones only sold copied discs, but that did allow me to get stacks and stacks of games whenever I went to buy them. The small form factor is something I loved not just because of the aesthetics but because if I wanted to, I could put it in a backpack and take it to a friend's house for multiplayer games. It's why I love gaming laptops and handhelds these days, and why I only buy slim consoles. I'm waiting for the eventual PS5 slim. When I got my PS3(only bought original discs for this one, since PS3 piracy didn't come until years later) I neglected the PS2 and let it collect dust and eventually lost it when I moved places. I'm still pissed at myself for being so careless about that console. I miss it.

I got a scph-50001, it's clock battery is still alive and well. Also for the fat PS2, you can try a PS1 disc or music CD, if those struggle to read or don't show up, it could be that your laser could just need replacing the laser, since the CD reading part is what usually goes out before the DVD part.

I've heard the 70012 is the worst for reliability. Apparently various issues can lock up the system or fry the laser, plus the slim problem of the ribbon cable getting loose and scratching discs

The PS2 is one of my most favorite video game consoles ever and I still have an old PS2 along with a lot of really great games for the system. My old PS2 that I still have and use, which is the fat PS2 model, is almost 19 years old already since I first got it for Christmas back in 2003 and it still works pretty well so far too. The internal battery that keeps track of the date and time settings in my old PS2 has died though, so my system no longer keeps track of the date and time now every time I power it on, and I also didn't bother changing out the battery inside the system either, especially since I don't really know how to do so. Other than that though, the console itself still works, and I'm still able to use it so far for playing games and stuff since it still reads discs just fine which is really great. I actually have three PS2 systems overall: my main fat PS2 which I first got for Christmas back in 2003 which I still use, a PS2 slim which I got off of Amazon several years ago to have as a backup PS2 console, and another extra fat PS2 which I just got from Amazon a few years back which I'm actually using as a portable system almost since I have an LCD gaming screen attached to the console for playing games with via portable mode without the need for a TV.

at 10:10 about the dead battery, you can actually fix that glitch by trying to change the date, keep pressing down on the d-pad i think and then switch fast to the year and the year will change and the orbs will be restored, fixed my ps2 slim doing this or something similar

@@jrob0021 i found it out on reddit, you press X and O at the same time and it lets you change the date and the orbs are restored. it doesnt fix your dead battery to the fullest as i had to redo this twice in about 1-2 month span but it isnt to hard to redo. full fix would be opening console and replacing battery obviously

Don't forget to check if the ribbon cable in the cd drive is looser than normal since if its loose enough It could make contact with the spinning discs and create a scratched ring around the disc, the fat models doesn't have this problem, but the lasers on the fat ones are usually worse to wear than the slim ones. just a FYI.

Another thing with second hand store is in general, not just Goodwill, is that they most likely will mark the console as untested because they are aware that there is some stuff they can't do without opening it, and they don't want to do that with consoles that still have an undamaged warranty sticker (even if that warranty is long past). They probably DO perform a power test and that's the extent of it (I will even see places make this notation), but will still mark it as untested since whatever they find can't be definitively identified, though that's usually in cases where it boots, but can't read data from a disk or memory card for some reason. Not saying that's cool, just stating why that happens. It's easier to list a console as untested since there isn't a category for "partially functional", only working, not working, and untested. They could solve their issue by offering a fourth category for these types of things to lessen confusion and make it more transparent what was done with the console once they received it.

The only issue with the SCPH-9000x consoles (also the SCPH-7700x and maybe the SCPH-7500x I don't remember precisely) is that the IO processor was replaced by a PowerPC chip. This leads to compatibility issues with some PS1 and PS2 games, since the PowerPC chip tries to emulate the original IO processor (which btw is the PS1 MIPS CPU used for backward compatibility when running PS1 games). I think the only Slim (besides all the Phats) which has perfect compatibility by having the original IO processor is the SCPH-7000x.

From my experience is pretty common for the fat model ps2s to be pretty slow on boot up even with the new laser it wasn't until the 5000 series they fixed that issue. And one of those PS2 slims the one with the dial-up modem is the first model released they're pretty rare

The ps2 laser just needs a cleaning. Had a disc error when loading up games realizing they were really scratched up so I tried a movie and it read movies just fine. I opened it up and it was blocked a bit, so I cleaned it and everything works great now, reads the discs within 10 secs.

PS2 laser are readily available and easily replaceable, first thing I do when I buy a PS2 is replacing the laser and if necessary the ribbon cable too. If your PS2 is over SCPH-7500X, I love to MechaPwn to DTL-7500X so It will read every region.

The 3001 models have the least reliable lazers out of all the fats. This issue is common. My 3001 R model had same disc read issues. 39001 fat is best.

I agree about the 39001 are the most reliable since they came inside with either a very reliable HD7 or a 400c laser. The 30001/launch models are very unreliable since they have crappy lasers inside which are 400b ones, cleaning the laser top and bottom on might fixed the issue, but I think it’s best to replace the laser for longevity purposes.

@@carlottajohns8691 I dont reccomend ps2 slims due to no compatability with action replay cheat discs. And no fan overheating bad lazers and scratch esally. Some older ps2 games dont work with the slims also. Freemc boot and hdds dont work either. My old slim back in the day was silver 770001. Slims are known to be unreliable. I had issues with mine with reading gt4 and taking ages to read some games. They also had cheap build quality and were clocked slightly higher than the fats which caused issues with some games. Fat 390001 only modei reccomend. If buy used try to get one with zero scratches. Any more than 1 scratch on bottom is a no go. If dusty no go. If no og power cord no so. If missing feet no go. If opened maby no go if not in veey good condition. Im extreamlly extreamlly picky about console condition. Ebay is full of overpriced scratched consoles. If buy new sealed old or modern put it in one spot never move and if possible never touch it. Dont use used games dont use it more than once every few months. Then keep the console covered when not in use with dust protector. Dont use original controller buy new one. Keep box and packing material and dont take controller or unneeded cables out of box ever. If possible buy 2 new consoles one to use and one for collectors resale value of about 10000- 20000$ in about 15-20 years from now. Put glass shell over sealed one and put on shelf and never touch for about 15-20 years then resell for thousends of dollars in profit in the future. Buy 2 controllers one to use and other to keep sealed seel sealed one in 15-20 years for about 200$. Wash hands before and after using conntroller each time. Clean controller before and after each use with lysol wipes and cover controller once done. Donf spend more than maby 5 hours on console each session of once every three or more months of not turning on or using console. Dont use it in any environmental that is hot or has pets or smoke or vap. Keep it clean dont let cords dangle without supporting the cord so its not strained. Never ever use wifi use wired only and dont ever use more than one controller for console. Dont use any non oem parts with console. Upgrade hdd with samsung ssd or wd sn850 2tb or 4tb sn850x m.2 ssd if ps5. Dont ever touch anything else while using console with controller. And always covor games and cases with microfiber towl when done. And more rules just message my on twitter. Its Computer_Geek95. Im extreamlly extreamlly picky. Resale value is critical. Do not buy used if it cost you more to get it than you can resell it for. If used. Thats a bit different.

The PS2 30001 models/launch models have very shitty lasers inside of them, but if it’s replace with a brand new one with a more reliable laser it should last u for a long time. In all honesty tho, 39001 is the best out of the fat PS2s since they have a much stronger laser inside of them especially if they had a HD7 laser in them. 50001 is not bad, but that’s where the PS2’s console quality started to go down since the parts gotten cheaper quality. Tbh, the slim models were some of the biggest pieces of crap, since they are built very cheaply and can scratch games.

Another test for PS2's should be can it play a PS1 game. Sometimes the system will load the PS2 game but not the PS1 game and visa versa. They use two different eyes, and sometimes one can become askew

You nailed it! Untested can mean they tested and items don't work. They do the opposite at the video game Goodwill in my area. They say "tested" on their video game items. I've bought three items, one console and two power cords that were tested/workimany. None of the items worked. No refunds, credit only. So they'll get the money either way. Then they put the items that don't work back on the floor as tested working again. Pretty scammy.

Hey, I have a question for any of you. I’m trying to find a really dirt cheap PS two for my cousin that used to have one, but it was burned in his house fire, and he says he is trying to re live those memories but now he can’t find one at a cheap price. Please and thanks Happy holidays!

I have about 20 PS2 games from when I had my PS2, but it was stolen. So I just paid a hundred bucks for a supposedly tested unit. But, I find out how many possibilities of fault they can have, including the battery, which has to be soldered in. Then the seller sent me the wrong power cord, so I can't test it till I get a new cord. I got the model with the built-in power supply. And he sent cord for brick model. I'm crossing my fingers.

Any updates? Just ordered a used and tested PS2 Slim 7900x series (which fixed the ribbon issue) from a reputable eBay seller. The listing had a lot of photos and it looked very clean with typical wear. I just hope its prior owner treated it kindly. I have free returns, but I'm crossing my fingers as well.

We still have our black PS2 slim from when they first introduced the slim models. It just barely works but can still play certain games on it depending on which discs it wants to read 😂😂 EDIT: it also would never load the blue or gold discs some ps2 game discs were 🤦🏻‍♂️

Re. The ps2 fat disc issues...... I'm no ps2 expert however I'd check for failing capacitors (bulging tops) or even beginning to leak.
