They are heavily involved in their arrangements. They do have a “invisible 6th member” their arranger/producer/co-founder Ben Bram (also worked on Glee & Pitch Perfect), but after the initial arrangement (usually the product of Ben, Scott - the baritone, & Kevin - the beatboxer, though that varies) the whole group sits down and works out the final version together. 2 of their 3 Grammies are in the category of Best Arrangement, and all 6 names are on both.

I love when reactors pause to share their thoughts, but you missed a lot about their transitions & dynamics within the song by listening to really short clips & not rewinding a but when you start back up. PTX uses spaces & levels within their songs in a powerful way, you might want to calibrate a bit more for that. Excited to learn from a knowledgeable musician, I look forward to more.

Please make a reaction to a young, very popular singer in world. Videos from this singer collect hundreds of millions of views. Diana Ankudinova is now only 17 years old. She has a very unique, very deep, clear voice. Dr. Marc Reynolds (Voice Teacher, Stage Director, Performance Coach and Consultant, and Acting Coach) said about the performance of this girl: Really really exceptional! Even if you ignore her age, even is she was 10, 20, 30 years older, this is still a really exceptional performer here that we're seeing. But at her age, unbelievable. Really really exceptional! Absolutely gorgeous! And again, not just because of her voice, because her performing, watching how nuanced and engaging her performance is. Ah, it's just so stunning. It's absolutely amazing.

I can’t believe you missed that Bb contra bass note (3rd ledger-space bass clef) that Avi sings on the last chord! The overtones shower down from that fundamental. Avi doesn’t need help on that note (he can sing a 4th ledger-line F# and sometimes lower in his chest voice because he is a basso profundo! The new bass singer, Matt Sallee, though a wonderful singer with his own skills, is a lyric bass-baritone, not a basso profundo, so he doesn’t have power in the contra bass register. Re: arrangements... it has been-from the beginning-the modus operandi of Pentatonix to sit around a table and “jam” on a song to get a basic arrangement down. They then go to Ben Bram to refine the arrangement and print out the final result.

I didn’t notice this until they performed it live, but the baritone/tenor (Scott, who starts this song), takes over the bass line when their normal bass takes over the melody. If you listen closely you can hear the tone become a little brighter because of how Scott sings Unrelated, but there used to be a documentary on Netflix that followed them as they rehearsed and opened one of their tours, if you’re interested! I believe it was called On My Way Home, I’m not sure if it’s still there but it was really interesting to watch

They take their own people with them to do all the mix and soundwork. A cappella is really so different they have to. Avi Kaplan is the bass. He has one of the most melodious bass voices you will ever hear. Would love it if you reacted to his solo work. Change on the Rise and the alternate version of Aberdeen will give you an idea of the absolute power and soft beauty of his voice.

And be aware. Avi left PTX in 2017 for personal reasons. He helped them find their new bass, Matt Sallee. Matt started with Pentatonix for their Christmas tour in 2017, and became a full member in early 2018. He’s a great singer. Obviously, not the same as Avi-but great in his own right. Check out their new video of “Amazing Grace”. Matt starts with the first verse. You may see the members appearances change over the nine years they’ve been a group. Mitch (counter-tenor) is a true chameleon-different styles, hair etc, and he’s lost weight along the way. Kirstin also has changed. But the only personnel change has been when Avi Kaplan left and Matt Sallee came on as bass.

Agree that when they use their own sound engineers, we get to hear the best from them. I've seen more than a few disasters when they've appeared on shows that don't take into consideration that they are acapella and don't balance microphones properly or don't do anything at all. Very frustrating when they don't, because it seems that either Avi was not audible or Kirstie would be too strong or too absent.

@@drieuxkoeppel8152 I know your comment is a year old but wanted to inform you that Avi picking Matt out is a rumor that keeps spreading in this fandom. Ben Bram contacted Matt looking for a bass but didn’t tell Matt who needed a bass. Matt didn’t find out it was Ptx he was auditioning for until he had to audition for them in person and they had narrowed it down to a few guys. Matt has confirmed this in an interview he did. Avi was not involved at all.

Will you please react on a new Russian prodigy Diana ANKUDINOVA, 17? Foreigners call her 'The Queen of Goosebumps' (you often get them while listening) and in Russia her nick is 'The Shamaness' for her deep, dark and somewhat primeval voice. I've heard a few times how reactors called her 'The Possessed' because of the shocking contrast between her looks of a young girl and her true contralto. Some even think that her talent equals one of Dimash... She is getting popular in Russia and former Soviet Union especially after her brilliant performances on 'You Are Super!' contest. I suggest you to react on one of this performances -- Human, Wicked Games, Rechenka, Blizzard. Big thanks! =)

It would be great if you went much longer on a song, stopped and analyzed that portion, then rewound the "tape" and played it again in order to clarify your analysis.....not bad, just inopportune moments

Good information and nice reaction! Pentatonix collectively makes all the arrangements along with their producer Ben Brahm who has been with group since they won NBC'S "The Sing-off" in 2011. Their musical IQ is top notch and they are all hard workers who raise the bar and then raise it again! The tall blond guy Scott Hoying, the high tenor guy Mitch Grassi wearing the snowflake shirt and the girl Kirstin Maldonado are childhood friends and called themselves the trio before adding beatboxer Kevin Olusola and bass guy Avi Kaplan to become Pentatonix for the Sing- off competition.

The lines on the video is called interlacing. I don't know if you're using Firefox or not, but I had heard that there's some glitch with Firefox where if you watch a video at 1080p, the video has some interlacing in it. Sometimes you just have to turn it down to 720p to get rid of it. However, if the person who uploaded the video didn't deinterlace the video before posting it, nothing on your end will fix it.

The background to this band was formation for a TV competition called the Sing-Off with strict a cappella rules. Which is available for review and comment and many reactors do so. Every reactor goes through this for Pentatonix, Homefree and Voiceplay. Why would they do all of that modification particularly for a live performance if human voice and beatboxing was their brand and trademark? Try some of the patreon performances without even microphones to see. Now in the last couple of years that a cappella integrity has been lost, in my opinion, by the introduction of dead former singers Bing Crosby and Whitney Houston to their music but not in the beginning. They even had an argument about whether to use a whistle or have one of them do the whistle vocally to maintain a cappella integrity. Their Bohemian Rhapsody cover with Mitch Grassi replicating the guitar solo is a fairly epic moment and occurred the year after this. Kevin and Avi comprised the rythmn section with all sound effects of bass, drums, wind, overtone singing etc.

The countryman Mic is commonly referred to as a Madonna Mic not Brittany Mic. Because Madonna was the first to wear one back in 80's. Then you saw the likes of Janet Jackson and MJ wear it. It Brittany only wore it as a way to honor what they (specifically Madonna) did.

Pretty much. I haven't seen many reactors who don't immediately notice the unusual timbre to go along with the depth of a true bass as opposed to a baritone singing bass.

Love the technical notes. So glad you are loving PTX. They are my fav group now. Ah.... the infamous Jeff Buckley. Seriously, his version is so soul wrenching I can get caught up in it and waste a 1/2 day listening to him sing that ONE song..may he rest in peace.

Nice reaction and analysis. Your comments on the general reverb make me wonder about the ability to use a slightly different sound mix for the video and the house. I can envision sending the mike feeds to two separate mixers - one for the house and one for the video. Or perhaps take the house mix and apply different effects, including reverb, on the way to the video recording. Another thought would be to record each mike track separately, then remix later in the studio for the video.

Hi and welcome to a group that has over 5 BILLION views collectively on You Tube. For everyone just diving into them I always recommend a chronological journey, at least in the beginning, by starting with their "Sing Off" performance 1-12. It really introduces you to the band and each individual's incredible talent. Also, Kevin (the beatboxer) is ridiculous. Please check out his solo version of: Kevin Olusola KOver of Marion Hill's "Down". It's okay you can thank me later. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

They did arrangements by ear and included Ben Bram as well as the band members. See 2 of their 3 grammies for arrangements for Daft Punk medley and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies. There are videos of arranging their cover of "Happy" for example with Kirstin explaining how they did it. This band video documented a ridiculous amount about the band's life on and off stage as a marketing technique. They were formed and filmed from performance 1 of the band on. So many interviews and private off 🎤 performances. Hard to hide much of anything living in a fishbowl with privacy consisting of your bunk on the tour bus maybe after documentary film makers were taken along on tour by the band. Of course their first Grammy caused people to notice them and led to this funny article about the gays, the straights and the girl after television (and their record label) had tried to keep that deadly quiet for so long. Oh the article has a live performance of Daft Punk in Japan embedded if you prefer to use that to react to instead of the official video. brightestyoungthings.com/articles/pentatonix-the-best-group-weve-never-heard-of

@@hstppt They lip sync many of their performances. Their Christmas specials are largely lip synced. Their official videos are all lip synced. And yes, a number of their songs on tour are lip synced. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppu9ZmOpmbR-iqM This isn't a dig against the group. PTX are wonderful, their arrangements, voices, and production are all top notch. Like many artists, they lip sync both for quality assurance and to preserve their voices across heavy touring schedule. The difference between live and prerecorded is not difficult to distinguish. See any of their actual live performances of this song to note differences.

First time seeing one of your reactions. You obviously know a great deal about the music industry. Although I know you must pause or talk to avoid copyright claims, I prefer reactors who pause to comment and then go back to before the pause to retain continuity. Yes, I know I can and do go to their channel for complete versions and I do. My main reason for watching reactors is to see how others react to performances I love. Speaking of performances I love, can you react to Angelina Jordan’s initial release from Republic Records? It dropped Friday.

I am a huge pre avi leaving pentatonix fan, however my belief is that this was pre-recorded and mixed. When they breathe and the actual breath differ slightly. Just my opinion. It’s next to impossible to be that perfect on a live performance. I sing in a barbershop quartet, and there is always one or two blips that happen with almost every song…
