Don't go self taught! My school is also a testing facility. They test welders for companies like BP. In the 5 months I was there our instructor, who is the CWI, would show us all the guys that failed.... Good luck to ya!

I went to a welding school, struggled to find a decent paying welding gig, had 2 kids and a third on the way, moved to SE Texas to get into refineries, oil field, whatever that was welding/fitting that payed good. Found out the hard way if you don't know anyone, Good Luck! Not Happening! All the certs from school didn't matter. So I checked out a local union but couldn't pull the trigger (not for me) got a job as a shop foreman at a diesel shop to pay bills and feed the family but am working towards putting a truck together this fall and start doing side work and start building a business out of it and would someday love to go to conventions and meet ups with guys such as yourselves and help and learn as a community and welding brothers.

I’m currently a union apprentice and I’d say it’s real beneficial learning welding but also fitting and rigging and everything else involved in the pipe trade. Also would like to use this knowledge down the road to get into business like you guys. Trying to start small in mobile welding now.

What’s your suggestions to someone who’s going down the self taught route and want’s to learn how to fit pipe and pull measurements, would you be willing to hire someone and teach them if you see they have a great work ethic? Also when you hire new people are you looking for a certain amount of years of experience and what weld test do you make your new hires take ?

went to school for 1 year and finished all the courses with 2 months left, the instructer tough me how to put a tig root in and got it down to where i could pass A 6g tig/fux out, then got my first job $21hr. 6 months later im trying to chase turnarounds and want to learn to get better at stick out

The colleges here in kern county offer certificate programs through AWI, but they also offer the associates if that's the route you want to go, honestly if your a helper and are put with a good welder you will learn everything you need to know. Also make sure you network and get to know people.

@dtmfilms I broke out as a helper then became a welder. Alot of companies here in Cali are asking fir certs you can't just go and test

Say what you want, the best pipeliners in the industry are Union and non union has rode their coat tails, always have always will...If you can't hack it work non union and work till you die with no benefits...I never hear you mention anything about benefits and a great retirement package...

@@JacobSchofield I have no problem with a man making a living the best way he sees fit...I do believe being able to retire before you are all used up means something and there is a lot to be said about it... I know Unions aren't perfect and they don't suit everyone....I do appreciate you answering my comment ...Much respect to you Mr. Schofield...
