For 1st timers using the "manual" ring gap file, it is very important you spin the wheel in the direction that you're cutting in towards the center of the ring, never outward, to prevent chipping the coating on the ring. Also, only apply enough pressure that it is barley filing material off or you may damage the ring. Make sure you oil the cylinder with light oil or WD40, don't get crazy with oil, just need the tiniest film to keep from scratching cylinder while taking ring in and out checking gap. Too much oil, you are actually causing oil between ring and cylinder to give an improper gap measure. If you'er using motor oil, wipe on with finger and then wipe off with a clean rag, leaving the tiniest bit of oil on the cylinder. Goes the same while installing pistons.

I'd just add start with the second rings first otherwise I'd just about guarantee you'll over file them if you start the uppers. Also count your turns it will save you time.

Rubbish! i filed my moly rings with a hand file got excellent compression and no issues for years after the engine shop that built my bottom end made the gaps to small and broke a ring you don't need a fancy ring filing machine at all.............

@@duncanfelton5311 This is true. I have filed rings without a ring filer with no problem. It's just easier and quicker with the little cheap filer.Sad about that engine shop that failed to gap rings correctly. They had to know, they were just slobs.

I like the way you put that, to tight is definitely bad, but don’t go super super loose. You can put some serious gap in with no blow by issues. I think it’s best to go on the big side for a strong runner. It just seems like cheap insurance with no downside.

Great video, I learn something from every video. I would like to see the proper fitment and trimming process on a cam button on an older SBC block, and how to get and figure and adjust for proper clearance to the timing cover. I don’t feel that the nylon buttons will hold up well so I’m referring to the metal bearing buttons. Thanx in advance 👍

I am rebuilding my boat motor. I was able to hone out all of the scratches. However, specs call for ring end gap of .011 to .023. The top and bottom cylinder are .023 at the top and .025 in the middle and .023 at the bottom. The middle cylinder is .025 at the top .030 in the middle and .026 at the bottom. It says it can be .002 difference in dia. and each .001 in dia. = .003 in ring end gap. Do I need to have this bored out? Just a note that is with brand new standard size rings.

30-thou on the 2nd-ring... and ....the top oil-scraper . It stops 'flutter'/ oscillation between the two compression-rings and stops 'land-wear' . It's Very-important on any high-hp engine or even a standard one that gets-pushed ...and yes , it does affect performance and engine-viability over time

Nothing towards you....It occurred to me that there are more variables than what the piece of paper recommendations provide; such as rod ratio, different block/engine material combinations, engine coatings (heat management) even cooling considerations in components and fluids, and changes in aerodynamics, body design and airflow priorities over the decades...If a piston/rod angle can lose power at higher rpm, and even scuff or knock the walls somewhat (even that coatings are encouraged) along with the aforementioned thermal variations, the rings are often getting worked in uncommon performance builds, that may lead to failure in general building parameters.

I am getting a lot of conflicting information from people smarter than myself, and even though I am not of fan of reaching out to people online, I feel that I would trust your opinion. I put together a 408 that will end up boosted. Despite the recommended ring gap by wiseco, I was told to do. 028 on both rings. I have 210 psi cylinder pressure with about 20% loss on an old snap on leak down tester. And about 14 using the double gage method. There is quite a lot of crank case pressure (as to be expected) what do you think of all of this. Thanks for your input.
