Jacque discusses "what is depression?" and talks about elements of self-image and identification that produces low self-sufficiency. Covers how projections create disappointment, how "looking within" rarely works, and shows how specific reward/reinforcements often provide only palliative help. Discusses the importance of learning new things and gaining predictability when dealing with depression.

I think that the number of people who are diagnosed with clinical depression nowadays is way larger than the number of people who actually have messed up brain chemistry. Not to mention that you can have messed up brain chemistry because of the reasons Mr. Fresco pointed out and not some genetic flaw that caused mental disorder. That's what he's talking about: most of the "depressed" people are simply sad and miserable because they can't realize their true potential, because they have unrealistic expectations and because they pursue things that they truly don't need, in other words they are not living their lives for themselves. Another problem is that so many people nowadays like to justify their inability to change their lives(study more, exercise more, eat healthy or whatever, anything) by saying that this is who they are and they simply can't change it, that it's all some health problems or unfortunate circumstances that they have no control over. Most of the time it's total bullshit, and all they are doing is desperately looking for excuse not do anything, because the truth is that humans are naturally extremely lazy(obviously because it's an evolutionary advantage), craven, indecisive and whatnot, but we don't want to admit it because it will lower our self-esteem so we come up with all sorts of theories some of which are very elaborate to justify our behavior and never dare to admit the simple truth even to ourselves preferring to live in the captivity of illusions. And that's what Mr. Fresco's philosophy is all about: snap out of it, live in the reality not in your imaginary world and then maybe, just maybe things will change. Or you can keep getting high on anti-depressants, tranquilizer, booze, food, postmodernist philosophy or whatever other drugs you're taking and continue to waste your life.

He just described how to manage emotions, being depressed is an emotion, when you experience it you can choose to hold on to it or quickly discard it. Being able to manage your emotions properly is also a high form of spiritual consciousness. At that state of being you are wiser, you love unconditionally, you are compassionate, you show empathy.

Tho' he's 98, i honestly say that there's nobody who tries harder to do their gig than he does. He's absorbed by the mission he's on and his drive to carry out what he can is both enlightening and heartbreaking; because we see what we're up against as well. he said at a session the other day "if i kick the bucket tomorrow I'll have no regrets, because i know i've done all that i can do"...and he's right! I've been thinking to myself for a long time, on how I would like to change the world. I told others about this & was told that You cannot change the world, its always going to be a bad world. I got depressed I got quiet I got skinny I got scared. I started learning about the bad things in the world, & told myself I can't do anything but sit back & watch because my efforts would be wasted. I might not change the world, but I can change myself, and inform others on what I thinks right. Peace In.

Look guys, I just wanna point out before you watch the video - Jacque is more talking about "values-related depression" than biochemical depression. So before somebody starts about genetics, you should first know that he talk about depression when you are biochemically stable, meaning your neurotransmitters are intact, levels of monoamines and serotonin are normal and you don't suffer from terminal or very unpleasant illness. That would save a lot of heart ache. Yes, SSRIs and other antidepressants work - by altering your messed up brain chemistry.... but psychiatrist or psychologist don't necessarily deal with what to do when you're not depressed anymore (biochemically)...they don't always give you the right method (nor does a priest)... that's what Jacque is trying to tell (at least that's how I understood). Any reply?

Thank for pointing this out! Too often when depression is being discussed, there's no clarification on how the depression is based. Being depressed because of a biochemical imbalance is much different from being depressed because of having a bad day.
@je6874
@je6874 Жыл бұрын
I think you misunderstand what the biochemical model of depression is. It doesn’t describe an established cause of depression - it may be a consequence of depression. Whereas, what Jacque is describing in this video is how people can end up in depressive states by virtue of their mindset or behaviour… this is the role of the psychologist (a good one) to establish. Once found, their client can work on this. Medication mostly treats the cause of symptoms (the imbalance) but the root cause of symptoms is, in most cases, established in psychology. Medication has to be paired with psychology input. Medication has *limited* efficiency on its own. I hope that makes sense.

The distance between our expectations or assumptions about the way we think things "ought" to be and the way they are is what causes depression... true... and then our ability or inability to effect change compounds it. So alleviating depression requires a perceptual shift. Seeing things as how they could be, as opposed to how they "ought" to be. And then supporting those possibilities through choices that offer us a sense of power or "self." Thank you, Jacque. For all you do.

Jacque's more apt to suggest sociology over psychology, and investigate behaviorism independently. Someone came to a session here and was head of a department that emphasized behaviorism and told of interesting experiments they were doing, wish i could recall who it was. Anyways, Jacque maintains that a widespread acceptance of behaviorism would have negative impact upon the system and so there isn't much support from academia which requires funding to operate in price system.

We rarely recall where we picked up our set, attitudes, and reactions and so it really does look like we're "free to choose" as "individuals". It's a difficult subject and prone to argument. I know people in their 40-s who can barely formulate straightforward thought in less than a minute, this guy is older than America's democracy and in 15 minutes he nailed an important subject, proposed decent solution and still tell bunch of educating stories on other subjects. Damn he's underrated in this society. And forget about Venus Project itself, at least the dude who is talking for like a hundred years on the same subject, about things he understood and learned during his life, all the way from debating a Klan guy on moral issues to designing its own city and offering his experience for us to build a butter place to live, is worth some attention...

Thanks sir, I'd like to be a college student who does well and i'd even like to be a college professor like you, but that second thing I know is a faraway dream that takes many new things to learn and overcome. God bless

He speaks complete truth. Some of the most depressed-prone people I find out there are activists. As they are identified with the cause, have expectations and therefore lack a sense of real self. This is why they get aggressive when people don't agree with them!!

Feliz 2013.

Jimbobasaur, making a crisp distinction between physical and mental things for stuff like depression IS part of the archaic way. Been a long history of trying to define depression into a corner where there's a simple, common-sense solution, and then when a person who's got it bad (with, say, 80% biochemistry and 20% behavior/self-image) doesn't handle things, they're looked at as the perpetrators more than as the victims and things get cavalier and dismissive. Similar dynamic with many things.

Hi admin. Please let Jacque know that his lectures and session I've seen help me overcome my depression caused mainly by my opiod addiction. Instead of taking a pill I listen to him and get tremendously boosted. Please just tell him this. Filip from Slovakia

To expect to reach your goals 100% is what makes you depressed. The higher the goals are, the higher the chance to get depressed. Unless you have a expectation to not fully reach them or reach some alternative goals. Remember the tree that doesn't bend in storms have higher chance to brake.

wise words, the basis of Buddhist principles but the word "ego" was not mentioned once. it sounds like Jacques has come up with all on his own! ha a truly wise man. I believe the society the Venus project aims for needs this as a fundamental teaching. I think before we can make adaptation to our cities and systems we need an ethical understanding of who we are.

I would explain Jacque's lack of self-image as a lack of perception of our own self, the one providing our learning capacities, our "speaking-thinking being". This self is also considered our spirit, and don't need identification in order to be. It identifies with everything, yet is free and independent of our earthly condition, but super-conscious.Losing sight of this being means losing sight of our free capabilities, our free attention and energies. G.Kuhlewind thought concentration !!!

@thevenusprojectmedia I understood the difference, he said Low and No self image. The difference between the two are this. No-Self Image (Mostly feeling confused) - "I don't know who I am anymore. I'm feeling lost. I'm feeling helpless." Low-Self Image (More Defined Negative Self-Image) - "I'm ugly, I'm worthless, I'm a failure, I fuck everything up" I think it's possible to have a mixture of the two as well. I think most people refer to the No-Self Image as an Identity Crisis or something.

if a dog never saw someone die, then he doesn't think about death. but if he sees another being dying then thinking about death it's a big possibility.
